Flesh of God 2023

"Carne de Dios" is a short film that quickly establishes a strong atmosphere. From the first minute, the animation style is captivating, and the setting swiftly builds suspense. At its core, this film is about a Catholic priest who, during the colonization of Mexico, has to resort to the skills of a native healer because of an illness. Numerous themes are tackled; in addition to colonialism, the film also deals with sexuality and religion, among other things. For my taste, the film wants a bit too much at the end. Nevertheless, I'm always up for a touch of psychedelic horror. Especially when it's presented as interestingly as in this short film.

[Annecy '23] The denunciation of religious and cultural colonization is revealed in the opening sequences, which have a more naturalistic tone, but marked by the shadows that represent oppression and reinforced by the use of the Mazatec language, of indigenous peoples in Oaxaca. For the second part, the alteration of reality suffered by the Spanish friar, more striking colors such as violet, green or red are used. It's the most interesting because it is the richest in details and narrative suggestions, with daring ideas such as converting the figure of a crucified Christ into a monster.
