Freda 2021

Like a local bodega, it's cheap and amateurish but full of charm and good intentions.

This Haitian drama has all the heart of a passionate high schooler, but also the same lack of talent. It explores the political and social themes of the troubled island through one of its locals, but it doesn't realize its images are far more interesting than any of the lessons it has to give.

[IFFR'22] A powerful drama about the situation in Haiti that not only deals with politics with charity but also gets very well-constructed characters, who elaborate a diverse representation of the different ways of resisting in a crumbling society. It is also a very feminine look that reflects empowerment and sisterhood as the only way to resist in the midst of sexism and corruption.
