Gateway 2021

An indie movie that punches above its weight thanks to a strong and present director.

The story is simple (Irish hoodlums walk into a room one by one and walk out profoundly changed) and the slow burn feels like a necessity born of budget contraints rather than an artistic choice.

This is arthouse that's more art than house, though not an unpleasant watch.

A psychological slow burner that's pleasant for a short while and then just too slow for its own good. I wanted to see this simply because it's Irish and quite disappointed that it never really sparked and fully rewards you for your patience. It has a really intriguing premise that reminds me of The World We Knew but that one although wasn't that good, does it a bit better than this one. It's really hard to get into this one when it's so predictable and unbelievably slow. Every character talk super slow with long pauses. I get their attempt to go for slow, disturbing and psychologically fucked but the execution simply resulted in ponderous, boring, and try hard. The performance of the lead is as convincing as Melissa Barrera in Keep Breathing poster.
