Is it preachy? Yes, but it's a powerful sermon. The cast elevate a blunt script that casts a wide net trying to tackle anything and everything relevant to the black male experience, and the attempt is admirable in of itself. But there's something powerful about seeing these black men of all stripes and generations clashing and bonding in equal measure, with the acknowledgement of Farrakah's anti-Semitism and white liberalism, with the refreshingly honest and unsugarcoated portrayal of gay black men. And Davis and Braugher are the highlights of a stellar cast. Braugher is somehow charmingly obnoxious and brings such energy to every scene, and Davis is the heart and soul of the film, finding the emotion in a script that could fall into diatribe and being achingly human. All of the cast and Lee himself do the work to take this script to the next level.
