Better than the first at times and Slappy is definitely better. Feels more like the Goosebumps series than the first. Which was more about family fun than scares or creepiness.
Although I don’t remember Slappy having powers in the first. I thought I would miss the cast from the original. The new cast is pretty good though and the sequel is so entertaining I forgot I missed them lol.
Continue with the same formula as the first part
Certainly creepier than the last Goosebumps, and while it isn't a family classic, it is still reasonably enjoyable to watch.
It's a safe family movie, but it's still lots of fun. It's nice to see such a celebration of all things Halloween. Lots of cute and funny moments. I have no doubt the little ones would love it.
A great teen adventure on Halloween night with some creepy creatures in the middle. Great family fun!
It's weird, I watched both of the Goosebumps movies when they came out, and I liked part two more than the first. However, upon revisiting them, it's the exact opposite. While the first movie is a perfectly-made kids' film, that I will enjoy every October, the second movie may never get a third watch.
Overall, Goosebumps 2 feels like a step down, but that's not to say there are no good moments: to begin, this one feels like it could actually be a Goosebumps book adapted for the big screen. Also, I like that it has moments with a genuine horror feel; really, any moments with Slappy feel like a horror movie - only for kids.
Aside from that, there's not much to talk about. The characters are boring and goofy. The first movie had lots of humor, but it was used as a way to flesh out the characters and keep the story moving. Hell, even minor characters from the first movie had great dialog and felt important to the plot.
Moving on.
This is barely a sequel. There is only a mention of what transpired in the first movie, and Jack Black doesn't show up until the end. Really, without Slappy, and the magic Goosebumps books, the movies are completely unrelated.
I mentioned this already, but it needs repeating: the characters are so one dimensional. And who are we following here? Sonny, and Sam? Or Sarah? There was too much drama that didn't directly tie into the greater story.
I'm just really blown away by how well made the first movie is, and by how badly the ball was dropped here.
Just go watch the first movie.
I totally forgot that I watched this 2 years ago... Of course I was still recovering from covid back then still that doesn't say much about how memorable this movie was.
Maybe I'm too old for this, but I really liked the first movie, it was very fun to watch and I were excited for this sequel, but it disappointed. The first one is a family movie for all ages, this one is probably more suited for kids...
This movie is for little kids. Little little kids.
Needs more Jack Black to make this a bit more watchable, but I guess he was too busy filming 'The House with a Clock in Its Walls'.
Also, did Halloween 2018 steal a subplot from this movie? A girl at a Halloween party with her boyfriend, but she would later find him cheating on her. Whoever did it first, it's a weird rip off.
uh this one was horrible. i don't know why they decided to change the cast, wanted them to create like a universe and have sequels & prequels and whatever.but some stuff are not meant to be or people are not creative enough!
Initial Reaction
I want to preface the fact that I am not that familiar with the original Goosebumps books or television show.
The Good
• The way this movie actually feels like a Goosebumps book would play out over the first movie is a major plus.
• Slappy felt more menacing in this movie, giving him a haunting presence whenever on screen.
• The kids were also pretty good. Some better than others, but they are giving it what they have to offer a movie such as this.
• Inventive ways to get in and out of trouble. More so than the other Jack Black film that came out a few weeks ago, The House with a Clock in its Walls.
• Uses the right amount of time with certain characters and knows when to not use them. A big plus for the morals here.
The Bad
• Poor use of the music score. Sony has a tendency to throw in some of their licenced songs in films. This suffers from that as well. The score from the original Goosebumps movie was a good eerie and fun piece. Here, it's pretty much only used in the opening credits. Leaving most of the film relying on cliche jumpscare noises and some unoriginal dramatic music.
• Dynamic of characters here is a big step in the other direction. The first movie had it's cliches with the family, sure. But here, it's just diving deeper into the pit of family tropes in kids horror stories. Having major plot points revolve around specific characters that we don't care about.
• Like I said before, it has the upper hand for some morals. But, they are only a few compared to the wide range they tried to squeeze in here. Not focusing on one cohesive lesson hurts the story, though, not as much as other movies. The bully aspect here is toned down a lot from the other movie mentioned before. So that is something.
• Humour is meshed with frightening moments too abruptly. This was a factor in the film It but it worked there for the switching of characters. Here, everyone is always in the same place. A group.
• Slappy may be more menacing. But, they show too much when they should show nothing. More is less when it comes to showcasing and building fear. But sadly, that doesn't happen here. It makes it more lighthearted and playful when it should be more scary, with the set up for Slappy being so good.
Conclusion
Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween is nothing really special. It takes a step back from what made its predecessor such a surprise. Basically copying that film and taking its time to dull the horror down for more fun times. But I guess, kids won't mind. The imagery should have been a spectacle considering what they could have done for the holiday. But it ends up being dull, unimaginative and unoriginal. A Halloween movie that's fun, but loses its wonder the first one gave us. The twist as the first praised the original books for. Is nowhere to be seen here. This "scary" kids movie is just a PG substitute for Anabelle.

It needed more Jack Black.
