Haunter 2013

"Haunter" isn't scary. It's not gory. It's not disturbing (even though the murders ought to be). It isn't even suspenseful. And even the jump scares aren't...well...jumpy.

What it has is some nice visuals, some atmosphere, and a good performance by Abigail Breslin. It was a decent choice out of Netflix's far too meager selection of newer movies. I was a bit upset that I spent 90 minutes mostly enjoying what ended up being a Horror movie quite possibly made to satiate the "Twilight" crowd.

What a disappointment... I was never a big fan of Cube but loved Splice so I thought that this would be a decent, modern, horror story...
The film opens with a bad looking CGI intro along with an ugly gothic font and zooming out on a fake looking house surrounded by fake looking fog ending on an even more fake looking skull inside an iris. So as you might figured out now - that already blew half the movie for me (and you bet your ass that there are going to be CG flames along the ride). Why not use practical effects if it ends up looking shit? What follows is a haunted version of Groundhog Day. The atmosphere is pretty lackluster and gets disrrupted with predictable jumpscares. The story for what it's worth is interesting enough but drags on for too long and seems to make up "rules" like it wants to. It all ends on a scene where the writers of Ghost Whisperer or the "trip" episode from Bones would have been happy to contribute. Hope he redeems himself with a good entry to ABCs of Death 2.

An intriguing and novel setup for a ghost story is ultimately squandered on an underdeveloped story and internal world mechanics, which isn't helped by some occasionally patchy acting. It's also not especially scary, which for a horror movie is a bit of a problem!

I thought that it was a good thriller from an unorthodox perspective.

I wonder if anyone else had noticed at approximately the 40 minute mark the slight whoops that they made?

When you first see Lisa go into the little red door she uses a key and leaves it in the keyhole, moments later when she quickly backs out of the door, the key is missing, until she reopens the door and it is once again back in the keyhole of the door!:smirk:

Atmospheric and suspenseful, Haunter is an impressive supernatural thriller. A 15-year-old girl named Lisa starts to realize that she and her family are dead, trapped in a purgatory, but when she attempts to reach out to the living a mysterious stranger stops her. Abigail Breslin and Stephen McHattie give exceptional performances that have emotional resonance. However, the pacing is a little slow and takes a while to setup the plot. Still, Haunter manages to deliver an intense and frightening horror film.
