He Got Game 1998

This felt cozy to watch like many other 90s movies somehow. Good story, sports, and that's it.

I'm happy to watch a basketball movie without the "last minute point plot" for once.

A great film to pick up my Spike Lee watch with. A typical and contrived feel-good sentimental family movie plot-an imprisoned father gets a week out of jail to reconnect with his estranged son and get him to sign with the favored school of the governor- is elevated by Lee’s style and skill with the camera. He’s still one of the best at monologues, the montages helping to build tension and atmosphere, and his aptitude at burying you in an environment is perhaps unmatched. On top of that, Washington and Allen anchor the film with raw performances. Lee and Washington walk a tight rope to make a murderer sympathetic without making it justified, and they do it like it’s easy. He got game might as well refer to Lee, cause when he’s at his best, he sure has it.
