Heathers 1989

Weirdest movie I've ever seen..

Weird movie, does not appeal to everyone. I find it not that good, satire of teenage suicide with dark comedy

Classic dark comedy with such ridiculous 80s dialogue that it became quotable instantly. When it came out, I can't tell you how many of us junior/high schoolers were casually telling others to 'fuck me gently with a chainsaw'. As it was before the time of mass school shootings, this is a film that couldn't be made today - from the point of view of disgruntled teens so fed up with the popular kids that they plot to kill them all and mask it as suicides. There was even a modern day play adaptation of this film a few years ago in NYC - as a MUSICAL! - that just flopped. Audiences couldn't take the plot line and walked out. Well, I didn't. I sat in the front row and loved every fucking second. I mean, they made a musical number of the funeral scene for the football jocks, where the father is singing, "I love my dead gay son!". Hilarious. To me, it's a timeless classic. Not for everyone these days, out of context I guess, for a more innocent nostalgia.

I'm on an 80s teen comedies marathon and this has to be the edgiest of them all. Still feels fresh 30 years later.

The movie that the late 80s needed. It twists a lot of the tropes from the more commercial teen movies that came out around the same time, with the subversion often feeling more like a product of the 90s because of how dark and edgy it gets. I'm sure Todd Solondz had this movie on his mind when writing Welcome to the Dollhouse, but you can also see how it inspired campy movies like Mean Girls or Bottoms. Really enjoyed the dreamy filmmaking style, campy acting and absurd dialogue; it's a movie that's willing to take risk after risk and most of it works out really well. The deconstruction always feels clever and pointed, though sometimes it requires digging to understand what it's trying to say. Maybe some of it was an accidental stroke of genius, as its director never made anything noteworthy after this. However, that doesn't change that I had a lot of fun with this.

8/10

Definitely a lot different than other high school movies, even those in the 80’s that seemed to either focus on romance or rebellion. I feel for one you have to know what your getting into before watching heathers since it’s such a dark comedy and a unique one at you might have to be in the right mood to enjoy this one, but I did throughly and this will forever be a classic.

Eighties teen black comedy family classic. Winona Ryder and Christian Slater make this great cast featuring an excellent unsuspectingly dark plot. If you're a weirdo film nut that actually gets satire (and I mean that as a compliment ) go watch Jawbreaker (1999), Drop Dead Gorgeous (1999), Jennifer's Body (2009), But I'm a Cheerleader (2000), and don't listen to the opinions of tasteless cads...

Heathers was the seminal film about female teen angst and surviving high school. It’s important to remember that this was an offering from Gen X, so it’s existential and dark as hell.
Think of Heathers, Clueless and Mean Girls as a generational trilogy, with each film telling the same story in the language of its particular era.

I guess I just wasn’t a fan of the casual rape.

I suppose one of the signs of a cult classic is that you keep going back to it, knowing that it’s not the greatest film of all time, it’s just a load of fun. This is one of those. It’s a 6.5/10 sort of film, yet this must be the 4th or 5th time I’ve seen it. It just has the right ingredients in terms of re-watchability. And it is also a lot funnier than I remember in places.

Too bad about the final half hour because the movie really attractive

A teen angst/dark comedy that vacillates between mildly entertaining and really painful to witness. I'm genuinely confused why this film is considered such a cult classic. Honestly, I hated the first 50 minutes but was mildly interested the rest of the time. It's not necessarily my cup of teen angst where the lead characters are insufferable and extremely pretentious. The whole time I couldn't stop thinking about all the other teen angst films I'd rather be watching than this.

this is definitely a weird movie but I'm just here for the 80s/90s vibes (and also Winona Ryder!!!!)

This movie is so BAD! I love Rider but I’m very lost on the hype of this movie. Honestly I’m dumbfounded on why it’s so popular!

A dark satire of teen culture, Heathers is a cult classic from screenwriter Daniel Waters. The story follows a high school where teen suicide becomes popularized after a mysterious student orchestrates a series of apparent “suicides.” The cast includes Winona Ryder, Christian Slater, Shannen Doherty, and Kim Walker; all of whom deliver solid performance and work well together. Ryder and Slater in particular have a good onscreen chemistry, and are able to pull off the macabre humor. Yet, there are some problems with the story and not all of the jokes works. Still, Heathers is a fun comedy that has some interesting things to say.

A little too weird for me to like it. It really doesn't make a whole lot of sense. There are some good one liners but that doesn't save it. Also everyone is giving a bad performance doesn't help make the movie better.

This movie is too weird and not what I expected at all.

just saw this movie for the first time... and wow! This is by far one of the best cheesiest 90's movie I have ever seen! and it's surprisingly funny! (...well if you really like dark comedies!)

Seriously tough crowd around here.

Great one liners like "fuck me slowly with a chainsaw", and "why are you pulling my dick" but overall not that great of a plot or acting. Still there's something special about this movie. Almost like satire and they knew it was horrible and campy but did it anyways.

I love this movie, hadnt watched it in years, but I was 16 when it was first released. Far better than the sarcastic teen high school comedies that would follow, very dark humour, that works so well. Very quotable lines in the dialogue, always will be a top movie for me.
