Hold Me Tight 2021

[IFFR'22] The intelligence of a risky proposal in the overlapping of times, memories and realities that also have something of the imagined, is the honesty with which Mathieu Amalric presents us the story, which does not seek to surprise the viewer, but the emotional depth in the characters. It is a film about absence and pain told in a fragmented way, built around a woman who needs madness in order not to be mad.

Like a lousy relationship, this movie lies to you, is over dramatic, and takes itself far too seriously.

In order to juice up a slow narrative arc, the director juggles time more than a clown at the clock circus and even goes so far as to show us scenes that don't really happen. These tricks are as cheap as I feel after making up expressions like 'time circus'.

Interesting concept to tell the story in various layers, be it time or vision-based... but at points the underlying grief and pain comes across as too exaggerated and thus involuntarily funny.

And what really happened is too easy to guess... that doesn't take away from the grief itself, but maybe the impact of the reveal is lessened a bit.

Anyway, good movie.
