This movie... Completes the series! It did feel a little anti-climactic, but, you can look past it easily with the ending we receive. I could watch this movie series on repeat and I’ll never get sick of it.
How to train your dragon: The Hidden World is a movie to love that’ll bring tears to your eyes.
Ramp up the silliness. The last two movies just aren't able to reach the height of the first.
I really really really loved this movie. Honestly, I really really really loved all three movies. This one truly, once again, lived up to all my expectations. It looked beautiful, it was funny ( I cried of laughter at one point), I loved seeing all the characters again. It was just great. In the end, it got quite emotional for me personally. I tried very hard to hold back my tears but I let one slip, so I was happy my 3D glasses helped me cover up my tear filled eyes. I will miss these movies very much and be sure to watch them all again very soon.
Just realized that I pretty much only talked about my emotions but I also want to say something about the storyline. I think this movie had one of the best storylines of all three. I witnessed a growth in multiple characters, which is something I really enjoyed. I hated the bad guy, which hasn't happen in this trilogy yet, so that's pretty great. Loving all these emotions, to be honest.
So, if you haven't noticed by now, I loved How to Train Your Dragon (all of them) and HIGHLY recommend you watch them all :-)
things that didn't make sense in this movie:
- the light fury.
- the entire mating plot line.
- the hidden world. period. (if the hidden world literally changed everything why was it shown for maybe five minutes)
- why hiccup decided they had to live separately when the last two movies were all about how hiccup wanted to spread the compassion for dragons. the lesson that berk learned was just that dragons are another species and just being pets for them wasn't the best for the dragons. so why, since hiccup is all about spreading the love for dragons, did they have to completely remove themselves from humans instead of simply finding/creating more safe spaces for dragons.
- how it was incredibly easy for toothless to just leave hiccup throughout the movie, but then him leaving at the end was oh so hard for him. what is with this complete inconsistency in their relationship.
are these even the same characters like what.
honestly this movie would've been infinitely better if there was a larger focus on hiccup and astrid, the chiefdom, and how toothless, with the lesson above, would fit into that. and to remove the CRIME that was a romantic interest for toothless.
i'm so angry. i haven't felt this angry about a movie before.
It's visually stunning, but a lot less interesting than the previous ones.
First one looked great. Then you see the second, rewatch the first, and the difference is crazy. And I have no doubt rewatching the second now would give the same impression. Except that it felt like the characters didn't improve that much, it was more like "look at this fog, look at this fire, look at this sea, look what we can do". Yeah graphics engine for particle stuff are crazy these days, the waterfall looks 95% real, fire and fog effects are great but that's a little too much in your face.
As for the story, meh. Nothing much.
You barely see how life in the village evolved, it could have been interesting but it's just a long plan of "there are dragons everywhere".
The bad guy is only a dragon hunter, sure, a little smarter, but that's it. He just outsmarts them a few times to end up defeated in a snap like it could have happened in the first encouter.
There's a looooot too much of night furies awkward flirting. Sure that's the only original thing in the scenario, but that's not enough for a whole movie. And the female dragon character is very weird. First where does she comes from ? You have this super dragon hunter that is supposed to have killed every night furies, he is super stunned to learned that he missed one (Toohtless), but it's just normal that he actually missed a second one and that regular bozos just managed to capture her ? And then the way she acts makes no sense. She just happens to do exactly what Grimmel needs her to do, every time. So this guy can control dragons by drugging them, so you'd expect she's controlled, but no, she just does that naturally. Which means he just freed her like that, assuming that it would just work out for him.
Then there's this hidden world thing. Legendary, unknown aaaaand they just happens to find it the moment they set out for it. Actually, not even sure they were looking for it at this time, just looking for Toothless. There also happened to be no alpha there, so Toothless just lands there and boom, he's the king.
Also about the ending, dragons disappeared ? So basically every dragon in the world were in their village ? There was virtually no dragon anywhere else that was not under Toothless. So where did the bad guys caught the dragons that they were saving ? There were that few when it seems that the whole viking civilization was about them, fighting against them, capturing them, etc.
Could the final scene have been more cliche ? Nope, I can't see how that would be possible. So much that maybe it could be considered as intended ? Not sure.
Technically it's on the level, but apart from that, it's just a children movie, totally missing the originality and intelligence of the first two and full of non connecting story parts that can only be seen as lazy writing when you're over 10 year old. Maybe they thought the second was a little too dark, well this one is way too bland.
The How To Train Your Dragon Trilogy holds a place in my life that helped define who I am. Suffice to say, having now grown up somewhat I was eagerly anticipating this film, and did not expect it to be as emotionally impactful as it was. There are many criticisms of this movie, many of which are valid, like it really doesn't make any sense why they would leave all the dragons. Like, no one cared enough to want to keep theirs? Did they forget that their goal was literally to move in to the Hidden world with the dragons?! . Despite these things, this movie helped me get through a rough time in my life, where I felt my childhood slipping away and being replaced with a dreary emptiness, and this movie helped me to cope with those changes. So while nothing can top the first film, this one definitely deserves a place in my favorite trilogy of all time.
How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (2019)
Dir: Dean DeBlois
How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World is the third and final movie in the How to Train Your Dragon franchise, in which viking leader Hiccup and his friends must unite to find the hidden world which holds the key to them saving his dragon, Toothless and his friends.
This film really was the perfect ending to the trilogy for me, growing up reading the books and then watching the film series left me with really high expectations going in to it, and I honestly wasn't even slightly disappointed. The How to Train Your Dragon trilogy has to be up there in my top 10 animated film franchises.
The animation was really incredible and most of the shots were so captivating that it was hard to look away for even a moment in fear of missing some of the wonderful cinematography. The story line was also amazing and such a good way for the audience to say farewell to Hiccup and his crew.
I really don't have a single negative thing to say about this film, I loved it more than I ever thought I would. It was incredibly wholesome and I'd definitely recommend this film, and the franchise as a whole.
The toothless I know lives in a secret world under the freeway ramp
it's a very beautiful film probably the best one in the series and that ending is very emotional and just perfect for the conclusion of this amazing story
I literally cried at the end
This has been a fun movie trilogy and this movie does a great job of wrapping things up in a satisfying way whike maintaining the continuity from the other movies. The novelty of the dragons has worn off but they introduce the new light fury which kind of spices thing up a bit.
Unfortunately I watched the whole movie thinking: "it will get better".
It doesn't.
It is not a bad movie, but it doesn't live up to its predecessors.
Dreamworks Animation and Universal have released the final movie in the How to Train Your Dragon trilogy, The Hidden World. The movie had the opportunity to conclude an excellent trilogy while also showcasing advances in CGI animation. The story follows Hiccup (Baruchel) and his dragon Toothless as they try to maintain the coexistence between dragons and humans while facing a new enemy, Grimmel (Abraham), who wants to banish the dragons permanently. The characters and their arcs have been a key element throughout the trilogy and they are honored and concluded excellently in this movie. The animation is wonderful and the voice acting is on point. The plot is thin but well-written and engrossing for the majority of it. The conclusion works and feels earned, justified, and pulls at the heartstrings. How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World may be light on narrative but it’s big on heart, delivering key messages and sticks the landing as a fitting finale for a strong and fun trilogy.
things i liked:
- stoick flashbacks. absolutely perfect. would've made sense if the plot was about the chiefdom, as i stated before.
- animation was wonderful. it just got overshadowed by the complete mess of a movie.
also what is with the soundtrack. for the second one, enough of the original music was kept for it to have that emotional impact, but this movie did not at all. that was another huge factor as to why this movie felt so different (as in inconsistent) from the others.
Yea it's a pretty good film but no amount of dragon flames could melt my cold, unmoved heart.
A great end to a great trilogy! Great voice performances. Dynamic storytelling. Vivid Animation. All round excellence. I give this film and the trilogy a 10 (excellent) out of 10. [Animated Family Adventure]
I’m not crying. You are crying! The Hidden World wasn’t perfect, but it hits you right in the feels. And it never stops hitting. We couldn’t have wished for a more beautiful ending to our beloved trilogy. (Oh god, that final scene!) It had everything I want from cinema: Goosebumps, tears (alot of those), an epic conclusion and emotional goodbye to my favourite animation franchise. Farewell, Toothless... You will be missed!
Sad, but great ending to an amazing franchise.
9.3/10 (discontinuity of voice actors, see below)
A perfect ending to a simultaneously heart breaking and heart warming trilogy. I liked this more than the second film, and only slightly less than the first. I love the moments in this series that have no words, just emotion and body language. This film had many such times, both humorous and lighthearted, but also heart breaking and tear jerking. The writers did a superb job of making you question if Toothless really only stayed with Hiccup because of the broken tail, and that hurt my heart.
I really felt there were no cop outs in plot, no cheapened dialogue, and even the villain felt original. Voice acting was all around excellent, though TJ Miller missing was noticeable for Tuffnut's somewhat extended role (compared to previous films on-screen time).
The animation was ridiculously stunning, while not losing the trademark look of the villagers and dragons. The sand that toothless draws in, looked so realistic my jaw dropped.
All in all went very quickly, but I'm glad the ended they trilogy properly.
Snotlout Jorgenson: Who died and made you chief?
[silence]
What a great ending To a fantastic trilogy.
An emotional end to a good trilogy. The animation looks amazing. The story is good and very emotional at the end. If you liked the others you should like this.
A damn near perfect conclusion to a excellent trilogy.
The eponymous Hidden World is only in the movie for ~3 minutes, but the character dynamics and overall theme of letting go are so good, you won't even realize it.
There's a couple flaws of course, but the film as a whole is damn good.
The ending itself is also a great send-off to these characters we've known for a decade.
Go watch the entire trilogy if you haven't already.
what a wonderful conclusion to a gorgeous story and adventure, every movie is a gem, and each one unique in it's own way
some of my favorite moments from the Hidden World were;
-flying through the clouds scene, its just so beautiful
-Toothless bonding with the Light Fury while Hiccup supports him from the back
-Hiccup sacrificing himself for Toothless, then the way the Light Fury saves both of them, i loved that scene so much, especially the way they executed it with the slow motion, it was perfect
-of course the farewell scene between Hiccup and Toothless
-and when the reunite and his children make first contact with Toothless, so wholesome
i even stayed around and watched the ending credits because they included all those scenes from the previous movies
absolutely loved this Saga, wonderful, wonderful work
Really amazing very ,impressive storyline
Really really good. Watch the first 2 before to really connect. Wow.
9.5/10 - When I watched it for the first time I was totally in awe and completely amazed. Most likely because I've heard that it wasn't as good as the previous two ones. Not that I've watched it for the second time I must admit that it indeed isn't as good as the first two. It's still great but it feels like it could've been much better / had more potential.
So the first fifteen minutes or so where the most difficult. It started of both pretty dark and silly which I boch don't like. From that on it got better but it often was too silly for my taste.
My hopes for this third movie was basically to see more of Hiccup, Astrid, and Toothless, their development, and to get a nice conclusion. That part was covered so that was great.
The things I didn't need where the bad guys but I was already expecting that (I cannot remember a single movie where everything is always fine). However, the main antagonist wasn't really that good. At least he didn't have that much screentime.
Seeing the love relationships between Hiccup and Astrid as well as Toothless and the light fury develop was the best part for me. It was also nice to get some flashbacks of the young Hiccup and Stoick.
And of course the CGI was very beautiful. In particular I've enjoyed their great sand (and water) simulations, funny animations, and the beautiful colors of the hidden world (and Astrid's new armor is also quite pretty).
Another thing that was lacking a bit was the soundtrack. IMO they've (re)used it too little and I didn't like (some of) the newer remixes that much.
But we got a beautiful ending so that's definitely really nice :)
I cried horrors, the fact that all the dragons ******* made me all happy and sad. This film is a beautiful conception of love and longing and many, many things to laugh about.
So, this one is an odd one for me.
I've never been too big into the How to Train Your Dragon franchise, if I'm being honest. I saw the first one in theaters when I was six or seven (hard to believe that was almost ten years ago jesus), and, although I revisited it before seeing this movie, I gotta say it was... above average. It wasn't the best animated film to come out in 2010 (that film of course being Toy Story 3), but it was definitely second best.
This film itself is... I mean, if there's one thing I can praise, it's the animation. The vibrant popping colors are nothing short of beautiful to observe, and the fast, flowing animation has become almost a staple for Dreamworks animation. It's also a pretty funny movie too, and it definitely has some good, emotional moments, most notably between Hiccup and Toothless, and Hiccup and Astrid.
My main issue with this movie is the pacing. By God, the pacing. It's way too fast for its own good, and there's little to no time to really stop and breathe to take in what's going on. I mean, I get it, it's a kids' film. But there were times when I nearly felt overwhelmed with just how fast the film was going. Plus, while I said it was funny earlier, not all of the jokes really landed for me and some kinda went on a bit too long.
Overall a 7/10
I Like Kid Flicks. This one was particularly funny at the right times.
The second installment already reaches the peak. This one chooses to follow a new direction.
The movie is just wow, i hope there will be HTTYD 4 !
beautiful movie. gives a lesson about human nature and shows a good way to end the series. for now at least. sad moments, happy moments but it could have been more and greater. love the ending. worth watching!
I'm cryinggg, I love this film so so much
When you liked the first two movies you're probably gonna love the third This is one of the few movie series where each movie tops the previous one.
I missed the soundtrack that I loved in the second (and the first?) movie - in general I did not feel like the third one had a sound track that is memorable, but other than that, the movie is at the top of it's craft. The sound and sound effects as well as the visual effects are extremely good. I've seen it in cinemas in 3D and I can add: the 3D was also really ingenious. Right at the beginning of the movie I suddenly ducked because I thought somebody was throwing something from behind us to the front - only to realize that it was a sound and 3D effect of the movie. That hasn't happened to me since the introduction of 3D movies in the 00s. The new level of detail is incredible, for example the scales on Toothless, the hair of Hickup in the wind, the water, sand in the beach, the clouds in the sky or the fern leaves and grass in the wind - it's really incredible and a lot of fun to see - the style is of course the same as it was in the first movie 10 years ago, so really simple faces and forms. Still the added level of detail shows that DreamWorks is really getting out everything they can, animation-wise. This is really beautiful to watch, and worth your time just for the images. Also the style and tone of the movie has changed. Right from the beginning we get really dark atmosphere, fog, great camerawork - it feels like being in a Pirates of the Carribean movie when we are on the ghost ship - scenes that could easily be taken out of a action or even war drama movie. This is counterbalanced by really colorful art - especially in the "Hidden World" we are greeted with an explosion of colors, light and glowing effects.
But enough about the imagery. Let's take a look at the plot, which again is extremely dense and packed with a lot of side stories and elements. One of the main topics seems to be love and different facets of it: Love between lovers, love between friends, love as people grow, jealousy and letting go. Another important topic is growing up and being a grown up. What does it mean to take responsibility and to make decisions? And there are even social topics, such as making a group of people dependent from others, how to live happily, overpopulation, migration and immigration - boy this movie is packed. And all of these topics are handled really mature but in a way that this movie still stays a typical children's movie. I really liked this pretty much.
And if you are open for it, then this movie is extremely touching. There was a lot of sobbing in the screening that I visited, and a lot of watery eyes. This movie is extremely emotional and extremely touching.
Plot-wise I was surprised as the movie develops in a totally different direction than you would expect. 2 or 3 times I did not see the things coming the way they did, and expected something totally different.
So to sum up, I had really great fun with the movie, it is done incredible well, it conveys important topics and ideas in a very subtle way, it still has it's funny moments and great humor, that works on both grownups as well as children, it invites you on an emotional roller-coster ride and is technically really incredible to watch.
Everybody who loves animation movies should watch this movie and if you can, watch it in cinemas, and try to get a 3D screening. It's really worth it and a constant improvement of the series, as well as a great finale.
When it comes to the 3 movies this one comes out the best of the lot with a very moving ending.
Hello Guys
I need your help
I can’t watch the movie and i have no idea waar i do wrong
Can someone help me please
Look, as this is the third movie of the series you know love it or hate it even before going to see it. And nothing anyone says will be able to change your mind, so there's no real point in reviewing this movie.
I will say, I've never been a fan of the franchise and The Hidden World did nothing to change my mind. That said, I see enough in these films to understand why you hate me for saying that.
Beautifully done ending with plenty of action and drama. Possibly, the best of the series.
can't wait for this ! ! ! :'D

Hardly any words can describe the emotional punch and moral divide this film gives you when watching. It, like it's predecessor, has trumped the movie that came before. With even more maturity built into the story than before. It shows the targeted audience extremely important lessons, displayed with animation that outshines some modern CGI in big blockbusters.
The scenery is gorgeous and the cinematography is outstanding. Not trying to outdo the previous films with the "look what we can do with the camera" gimmick. But improves the stability and grounds the viewer within the world. Vivid imagery that adds to the story and the style, this movie has many points other studios need to take a note from.
At first, the villain seemed typical and unneeded after the second film. But the wit and backstory they gave him, don't make us feel for him. Only adding to Hiccup's story and his choices throughout the film. Toothless is way more "himself" here. Seeming that Dean Deblois wanted to focus on him letting loose. It really pays attention to how this voiceless dragon, needs to have a compelling arc as well as his rider. This does lead to my one gripe about the film, the Light Fury. She represents a very important aspect in the film. Her introduction, however, didn't feel right and could have been a bit more coherent to how she acts throughout the rest of the film. Although, it all adds up to the end. For this really is the final movie in this amazing trilogy.
With this marking the end of these stunning and surprising films. They capture the story of a boy, who trudges through hard times to find life's hardest challenges and truths. And they ended it extremely wholesomely. It feels, complete. As if it always should have been this way.
9.5/10
