This is an exciting horror flick with many tense even shocking moments. Jon Cusack's character is an everyday hero so cool and calm under pressure that you know something is not quite as it appears. There really were a lot of twists and turns here. Many fans of shows like the Twilight Zone may really enjoy this. The ending was a letdown when compared to the rest of the film.
Definitely not what you're waiting for at the beginning. You have to be very attentive throughout the movie. Overall it was great :)
Very intriguing movie about a man with a split personality. A doctor tries to heal him by killing every of his personalities except one. So that in the end only one personality would be left. But it doesn't work out as planed...
The criminal Malcolm Rivers is sentenced to death for killing six people. On the night before his execution, a defense lawyer and a psychiatrist came with new evidence to defend him, which is his diaries (the notes were lost and now they are found) The criminal was writing what happens to him daily in these diaries, but every page is a different story with different fonts and different feelings, and there were ten people taking turns writing, not one person! This is the defense attorney’s argument that the criminal is crazy and schizophrenic, where each of these characters represents specific feelings of the criminal. (Paris) representing the criminal’s dream of happy life and happy future (Orange farm)! (Carolyn Suzanne, the actress) is the criminal’s arrogance and narcissism, as he sees himself as more important than everyone else and their lives are worth nothing in front of his most basic needs (as happened in the accident scene where she did not open the car door and did not give her phone even though the woman was fighting death)! (George Yok, father of the child) represents the organized personality of the criminal who walks by the rules to the letter. (John Cusack) The conscience of the criminal represents the good side of him in parentheses. On the street, he did not leave Paris even though he was in a hurry..He took a risk and went out of the hotel to look for a doctor, even though he knew that he was not there..In addition, he broke the car window and forced the actress out. He hit the accused, he shot the policeman, and when he saw the actress killed in the washing machine, he was not afraid or terrified. Rather, he stood quietly) All these things the criminal does, but when Ed (John Cusiak) aims for good... All these characters appear successively every day, one character does not meet another... To prove that the criminal is really schizophrenic, they hypnotized him and gather all the characters in a place which is the hotel (all the events that happened are in the mind of the criminal and not a reality) only one of his characters is the killer and of course the killer character will kill the rest of the characters and this is what happened.. surprised because He was looking for the killer and didn't kill them. Doctor Ladd explained that he should kill the rest of the characters so that Malcolm Rivers would be the only one so they wouldn't all die because if he was executed they would be finished so Ed did and killed the policeman and he died and left Paris (because she's kind and won't do Malcolm's harm). What happened in the end, which is the doctor’s mistake, of course, is his diagnosis that Ed is the killer, and this is a mistake because Timmy’s character was the killer. Second, he killed all the characters because Malcolm split into these characters. If they were all killed, Malcolm would die, so in the end Timmy (the killer) killed Paris and remained alone in control. The doctor and defense attorney were killed.....
I just translated this comment and brought it here for understanding:grinning:
A good blow mind movie which worths a watch and your time.It could be better in some points but overall it wasn't bad..
7.4/10
Very entertaining, excellent cast, but was a bit disappointed by the twist.
"I saw you... I saw you in an orange grove."
When you thought the movie had a simple story turns into something more...strange.
James Mangold did a great job of keeping my attention as everything unfolds. Its set in one location during a terrible storm and ten characters are stuck at a motel and must face the longest night of their lives.
The ending didn't make too much sense when given some thought, but other than that, it was a solid watch.
Modern psychological thriller that does little in terms of explaining anything or caring to. Sure it's entertaining, and the basis of the "hive mind" is explained in about the simplest terms as possible, but if you're looking for a deeper meaning than what's on the surface and presented to you, you're not going to find it here. Good cast, cool set. Good for random viewings every couple years.
Pretty much well executed movie with a grand twisted plot, so basically it will take a bit of time to figure it out. Still kind of a great movie, can be called similar to shutter island which was a masterpiece even tho it couldn't create a vibe like it but still it's a movie of that kind. Liked it!
I just saw this movie for the first time, and it made it into my top 20 worst movies ever. And honestly, of all the "psychological thrillers" I've seen, this may very well be the worst of them all.
About this movie, the concept is OK but it has one of the most ridicoulus and unbelievable stories I have ever witnessed in any movie of all time. It's also one of those movies where you try to ignore it but the movie just keeps shoving plot holes, inaccuracies, and bad dialogue in your face, until it's just shockingly bad.
The acting is also spotty, the characters are completely lifeless, there is literally almost no emotions portrayed here except overacted anger (very out of place, and sometimes even becomes comedy material, like the bathroom scene) or very bad crying woman scenes.
The main hero is good at literally everything, and he randomly throws some of those manly-man tantrums every once in a while like "I'm having a fucking bad day man!". Cool eh?… ok honestly the main guy is very annoying. Actually, the whole cast is kind of annoying and it's hard to sympathize with any one if them. And we never get to know anything really about their personalities. Despite the fact that, considering how the movie turns out, that would have been very interesting.
Overall the movie is very clumsily made, and feels very amateurish all the time. It's also very cheesy at times, and the acting surely doesn't help here. The standard "what do you want from us!?" scene is a good example of this, and it almost drove me to laugh out loud. Such things keeps this movie from ever becoming intense or suspenseful, and not even once did I care who the murderer was or about the (very bad) "twist".
It pretty much goes without saying that the ending was very poor and clumsy too, but I must point out that the "surprise" at the very end is so predictable that I really wonder what they were thinking there. Everyone must have seen that coming.
Overall, it felt like they didn't put much thought or effort into this at all, and just assumed the main audience of this would be complete idiots. Well, it seems they were right, judging by all the praise this gets.
Apparently a normal psychological thriller, turns out in reality as something more sophisticated than usual. Found themselves stuck in a motel because of a violent storm, some people apparently unknown discover they have much in common ... Maybe too! A mysterious murderess does the rest ...
The actors give good performances and the direction is certainly well made, even if it never reaches peaks of excellence. At times almost splatter, the film is not for the faint of heart.
The final also, do not want spoilers, reveals a search for the adapted screenplay not by all and, although something seems a bit obvious, a few turns of the plot really leave you speechless.
Definitely a must-watch! Keeps you intrigued.
Am I the only worried about the effect this would cause on that fictional world over the credibility on multiple personalities disorder people?
I liked the movie a lot, but, it's a very sad ending
i called it. omg i fucking called it. i knew it was Timmy though i did get confused when he supposedly exploded Though i didnt expect that twist
I was watching it in theaters back in 2003 and had a good time. That's enough for a good rating.
I actually started watching this movie a while ago, but the first thirty-five minutes are extremely "empty" and lack the wow factor.
It was a risky bet, but in the end it pays off.
My rating oscillated a lot while watching it: first I wanted to give it a 3.5 (because of the mediocre cast and strange screenplay), then I wanted to raise it to a 4.5 (the plot twist helped a lot, even though I saw it coming miles away) and I ended up concluding that I should give it a 5 (the ending and overall atmosphere are knife-edge and I absolutely loved it).
So I guess in the end it paid off. Good movie
This was hilariously melodramatic and worth at least one watch.
A simple script with the concept that can be mind-boggling, wasn't expecting this kind of ending, twisted but understandable, perfect for watching in a thunderstorm night
Eerie psychological thriller; was entertaining but predictable at times.
very entertaining, but until it becomes clear what's going on a lot of it feels incredibly silly and lynchian, so if that's not your vibe just suspend disbelief and keep watching. i totally had no idea what this movie was about going in and found it genuinely delightful 18 years later.
god that's a whole fucking person in years i'm SO OLD
"As I was going up the stairs, I met a man who wasn't there. He wasn't there again today. I wish, I wish he'd go away."
James Mangold knows how to direct movies I guess, because everything he has done so has been stellar. This movie is no exception. It has a great cast and even though the story might seem a little cliche at first, the second half really comes through.
As a kid I wanted to watch this, so I rented it but in the case came Bourne Identity. I really enjoyed that movie, but wish I had gotten this one instead because this was pretty awesome.
Do yourself a favor don’t watch this you will be disappointed, with the ending of course
I just watched this movie because i had nothing else to watch, but it turned out great.
What an original and intriguing movie that’s probably before its time. Even though I was a bit slow to do it but I did enjoy figuring out that twist. Loved it!
I find this one a little silly, the editing took me out of it a little bit. But hey, it was entertaining.
Identity is entertaining and ambitious enough but it falls short on the execution. The cast is very reliable although they are all playing fairly typical characters. The performances are fairly solid but there are a few months when Identity gets a little too stupid. It has a lot of good ideas it just can't stick the landing.
I'd never seen it, pretty good actually, but when all "ends" in the room with the doctor and everybody else, I immediately thought about the kid, the doctor just forgot the kid. And for me in this type of case is always the kid.
Since David Lynch "authorized" to think whatever you want about the end of a film (although you can often tell yourself "in fact, all the characters are crazy"), some scenarists think they don't have to make any effort to write something that really makes sense. I think "effortless" is the word.

Great mindfuck movie, the plot twist floored me. It’s definitely not what you think it is. At face value, the movie isn’t super good, but the plot twist makes it.
