This is easily Sean Anders best film was just expecting a funny comedy but was hit with so many more emotions. This film is funny and charming but also so heartfelt and happy and just a whole range of emotions to be felt and sends just such a great message.
Great movie with quick pace and unbelievable chemistry between all the perfomers..Isabela Moner's perfomance was something else!
Also movie is touching in many parts and you can't be bored.
7.8/10
Well that film had a warming heart to it and a beautiful deep message and lots of love and it’s amazing that it’s based on a true story that made it more beautiful inside and out and it also had a great sense of humour along with a great cast..
I expected a Hollywoodised painting of foster care but this was surprisingly well done. Sensitively handled, beautifully played, and with a script that rings true. You will laugh, you will cry, and you will feel like being a better person afterwards.
I normally don't do the family movies, yet I thought how bad can it be with Mark Wahlberg?! Gotta love "Marky Marky" - Oh that totally showed my age!
This movie was extremely well done. I'm not one to get teary eyed, yet it happened a few times. It has good laughs, heartache & a cast that fit great together. Definitely recommend Instant Family.
Well, this film totally got more hype than anyone could have guessed. I really think it is impressive for a comedy by the director of both Daddy’s Home movies to get this much attention during awards season.
Whether or not it deserves all the attention I’m still not sure. On one hand this is a sweet and genuinely touching family drama that handles series issues in relatable ways and manages to shed light on a topic that a lot of people don’t know much about while appearing to have been a largely positive contribution to the conversation.
On the other hand it is still an awkward and poorly directed comedy that fits perfectly with the below-par work Sean Anders and Mark Wahlberg have become associated with.
I think that the touching family drama aspect shines through more clearly in this case, this certainly isn’t as awkward or annoying as I first presumed it to be.
Rose Byrne actually offers a pretty funny performance in places and Margot Martindale absolutely kills her comedic timing but for every good joke or well placed one-liner another lands way too on the noes or just completely flat.
At one point the film bites off slightly more than it can chew and takes a leap into the absurd while attempting to address a very series issue but given the overall subject matter and the message of the film being that adoption is not as easy as many people believe it to be (or as many other films have made it out to be) I have to commended the film for attempting to dive in to the gritty details.
Overall it’s a real mixed bag but I have to give a mild recommendation for this one.
Makes you cry really really cry.
A very charming portrayal of the ups and downs of the foster/adoption process. As someone that knows people that have gone through this process I can say this movie helps show the hardships of the process (although the movie is still a tad idealistic). It lets people know that while rewarding, its not all good times and it's not something you should embark on just to feel good about yourself and especially not on a whim like Pete and Ellie. Nevertheless it's a great message to bring perspective about this issue to a big audience.
As for the movie itself the leads are all fantastic. Mark and Rose have great chemistry and actually feel like a couple. Isabela does a great job at playing what is a essentially a cliche teenager but with the added jadedness of someone that's been through some shit and is not just being an asshole for no reason. The younger actors are fantastic (holy shit that little girl can shrill). Tig and Octavia do a fantastic job providing needed comic relief at times while also doing the harder drama parts well too.
Once niche point I'll give this movie is those sweeeet wipe transitions. They felt very satisfying for some reason. Just another example that VFX are not just used on big action blockbusters.
Major kudos to Sean Anders for directing a great mix of comedy and drama while delivering a heartwarming family film with great wit and pacing. 8/10
Decent movie with an amazing Isabela Merced, just as in Sicario.
She has the talent for a great career, but I fear her height might be a handicap.
Instant Family is a better than expected comedy / drama mix.
Recommended to watch with your family.
So heartwarming and full of emotions. I was planning to laugh and have a good time but instead, I laughed while crying and that was something that hasn't happened for a long time.
Girlfriend got me to watch this, and I think she cried just as much as she laughed. Both really enjoyed it. Rose Byrne has always been one of my favourites from when she did Two Hands.
This movie is real real good. At the beginning don't know for how long, maybe the first 30-40 mins it was full comedy and it didn't fully work. I was thinking this is a little lame but watchable, the movie slowly gets better and the moment they are not trying full comedy and the dramedy kicks in, it gets exponentially better and never leaves you indifferent. So keep watching.
Goddamn I love my kids... and simultaneously want to flick them right in the jugular
Was Expecting A Comedic & Raunchy Movie, But Was Just As Funny But Also Heartfelt And Happy. Genuinely Loved Mark Wahlberg In This Movie Even Though He Wasnt The Central Character.
You Go Through A Rollercoaster Of Emotions In This Movie And Love Every Moment Of It. A Great Movie With A Great Message, Watch And Enjoy.

Good movie. Not really funny but more sentimental. A good family movie with a good pace to it.
AHHHH Tig Notaro. I knew I recognized that social worker. Anyway this movie is literally everything you expect. There are no surprises with perhaps one or two. Mostly missed opportunities. You expect the kids to be adorable but end up a handful and they are and do. You expect them to do the hard work and make a new family. They do. Now where it gets tricky for me and the only interesting plot point is the biological mother. A woman with a drug addiction problem who had to give up her children. She gets clean and released from jail. Now what I had hoped the movie would do is give a nuanced take on this woman and her children and the relationship between them. I thought maybe they'd end up in a sort of combined family. Instead it's just a simple she refuses to take the children back and so the kids stay with the host family. At no point do they show the mother wanting her kids. Which strikes me as odd. I understand not being able to take care of them but I don't understand not wanting them.
Good movie, more of a touching then funny film.
"we're gonna adopt a whole shitwhack of kids, and i am thankful that whoever has a problem with it can fuck right off!"
saw this movie in theaters when it originally came out, and remembered it being pretty good. these past few years though, every time i saw it mentioned somewhere i would think "it's just a stupid comedy. it couldn't have been that great".
watching it again... especially now that i have kids... this is definitely a surprisingly great movie.
What a unique heartfelt hilarious comedy about a couple working in real estate development who decide on a whim to become foster parents and end up adopting 3 siblings. The journey they take has a comedic twist on it, but still the emotional heartfelt side is made clear. The casting is spot on and contributes a lot to to comedy. The plot development is also spot on. Yes, like most comedies, the soft side pushes out the comedy near the end, but in this the comedy goes all the way through.
I have seen this movie four times and I still cry every single one
Nice try, movie! Still don't like kids.
wonderful movie, and a load of hilarity. its kinda lovely.
THE ASPAPOE OF 'INSTANT FAMILY'
Mark Wahlberg suits the awkward father type very well. Rose Byrne is believable as his wife and they have fine chemistry together. The child actors are all surprisingly natural, with Isabela Merced, in particular, standing out and with Julianna Gamiz being the cutest child ever. Octavia Spencer and Tig Notaro should deserve a mention for their fine supporting roles.
The story sheds some light on the difficult situation with foster kids in the US, while building a warm and light-hearted plot around it. The plot itself is very straightforward and predictable, down to every little twist and turn, but it's held up by the fine performances from the cast. The script centres on relationships and develops them well throughout the film. Despite the relatively huge comedic content, the script relishes on the drama and the realistic depiction of foster families.
The direction by Sean Anders is solid, and the editing and sound design work well. The music is beautiful and the production values are top-notch.
Instant Family is an emotional rollercoaster, going from funny and warm to touching and sad. It has genuinely funny moments but also manages to tuck in one's heartstrings with some food character drama. It shrouds its basic premise in layers of emotions, allowing the audience to explore how the different characters react to different situations.
The pacing is fairly good, even though the film feels like it has two endings, the first one after an hour. The final act feels somewhat dragged out because of that, and it feels like the script runs out of juice before arriving at the conclusion.
Instant Family is not an original movie in any way, but it feels more down-to-earth than many similar films. It's not trying to be overly dramatic and keep itself grounded in reality from beginning to end.
Despite its fairly straightforward premise, this film is surprisingly enjoyable. It's emotional and rewarding and makes you warm and fuzzy inside.
ASPAPOE RATING: 48 / 70 = 3,5 stars
Very cute, heart warming, and sweet movie. One of my favorite with Rose Byrne.
Well this one already promised comedy gold, the scene at the adoption agency with all the parents and stereotypes was pretty great. The fact we're having at least two comedians sitting/standing in it too makes it even better. There was Tig and Eliza, maybe I missed some, but hell, haha.
This was a lovely, enjoyable ride! Funny, frustrating, sad, heart-warming, it's a lovely non-family-family tale.
The ending song kind of wraps it up:
"Under the surface you don't know what you'll find, until it's your time
No second chances, but all we can do is try, I made up my mind..."
*Blissful experience*
Absolutely loved Instant Family quite heartwarming story and well written! Very adorable caring story about a foster parents that are new to it and become fond with 3 lovely kids. Great soundtrack, many sweet scenes, delightful parent moments, so much fun I'm glad it's got high ratings. Great clean movie with a deep message, The narative is great, and it kept me engaged from start to finish! Brilliant film!!
My score 8/10.
“No, I think the clippers are awesome. I think they were smart trading Blake Griffin, their best player.
- Pete
Just fun. Not overly sappy. Really liked the Wahlberg & Byrne pairing.

I didn't have any expectations for this but it was surprisingly sweet, it reminded me of the kind of comedy films that were more common in the 90's
This movie was a great heartwarming comedy. It was great to see a movie tackling the subject of foster care. I didn't know what I was going to think going into this movie but the story telling, the acting, and everything else was absolute perfection. Loved it.
I so needed this movie! It was precious!
It should be called drama movie instead of comedy
It's not perfect but it works. I'm happy to give this movie four bags of popcorn, two sodas and a Teddy bear to Mark. Oh, and some safety stuff to Juan.
Very good movie. If this movie only drama,They would destroy to us.But still good movei..You have to watch your family..Mark and Isabela very good actor and actress.
Was expecting more of a comedy, but instead this movie more so delivers an important message with splashes of comedy thrown in. Touching film.
Not a bad movie it was ok had its moments
Loved it ❤ I was waiting only for comedy but I found it very touching with good message, Great acting and chemistry. And I loved comedy being mixed with drama.
it was a good movie. i expected it to be more kinda quirky and funny ( it was funny don't get me wrong). but it was good movie overall. enjoyed it a lot! Mark is funny!
This movie is the perfect example of the 7 out of 10 rating descriptor: good.
Not amazing, a little flawed and simplistic, but certainly plenty entertaining. It could probably have been cut down to a leaner 90 mins comedy and be more impactful - it does drag in a couple of places and the most important metric for any comedy - laughs per minute - definitely decreases the further we get into the movie. It turns more into a dramedy, but ultimately has a fairly uplifting message. The casting is great and the chemistry between the ensemble cast really works.
Just a decent, entertaining movie.
It was a really sweet, touching, heartwarming movie. Perfect to watch when you're feeling a bit blue, it'll turn your frown upside down! I hate myself for just writing that, but I'm a cornball with the circumstances dictate it, okay? Stop judging me!
Gotta say, I'm a bit let down by the acting chops of the younger girl. But I guess Netflix has dibs on all the kickass kiddie actors.
I went to the cinema thinking it was just a comedy but I found a quite beautiful story instead ♥
I feel like lately I am always pointing out that on of the genres that I do not enjoy at all is romantic comedy - and though this is more of a family comedy I would put it into that broader category of romantic comedies.
And actually, this movie is not that much of an exception: It is absolutely foreseeable right from the get go, most of the jokes are not that funny and have been heard a number of times, and in the end we get a dreamy happy end. It's so unbelievable cliché.
Yet, I gave it a good rating - that might shock you, but different to most other movies of this genre, I was pretty entertained - while thinking about it, I think there are 3 main reasons:
First, though humor is always difficult (and I mostly like intelligent humor, good made parodies, socially critical, ironic and sarcastic humor, such as in Silicon Valley, South Park, Futurama etc.) I do have to appreciate their take on things. Even though it's a 2018 movie it is far from the really stupid and dumbed down humor that (like movies by/with Melissa McCarthy, Jillian Bell, Kevin Hart, etc.) everyone uses this time. It's also not intelligent, of course - but at least it has heart. And it had some surprises in it's story, side characters that are funny in certain ways, etc.
Second, even though it's a comedy the actors play serious (not over the top like for instance Blockers) and the play really good. Of course with Marc Wahlberg and Rose Byrne we have two veteran actors. Of course, especially Byrne is in her element, having made mostly comedies (I would have loved to see her in more movies such as 28 weeks later). But we also have a lot of unknown actors and they are good as well - the kids are great, they are cute and great actors - you start to hate the petulant episodes of Julianna Gamiz character Lita, pitty the clumsy weepy boy Juan portrayed by Gustavo Quiroz Jr. and you sympathize with the teenage girl Isabela Moner having a hard time adjusting. And then there is a great supporting act by Margo Martindale.
Third, as already mentioned, the movie has hart. You start to like all the characters, even though they are so cliché.
Of course - as for a romantic comedy there are a few negatives - the story is all in all rather unbelievable, and avoiding any deeper character conflicts (e.g. the birth mother had great potential for drama), and in the end you get an happy end that is rather unbelievable (180° turn of emotions by some characters just because of one moment). But hey. It's a romcom.
Full disclosure: I only enjoy a small margins of comedies. I avoid over-the-top comedies, slap stick comedies, or low-and-crude comedies, so because Mark Wahlberg was starring in this film, I was hesitant. But, I'm a fan of Rose Byrne, was OK with the trailers and curious about the situation, so I took a chance. And, despite the tone of the comedy being hyperbolic, there were some very touching moments. And... I was so pleased that I liked this movie. The story was humorous, the predicaments were plausible, the situations were heart pulling, the acting was solid (YAY Rose Burne, Octavia Spencer, Tig Notaro, Margo Martindale), the kids were cute, Isabela Moner was a stand out talent (she even kills it with her vocal talents during the credits). I enjoyed it. I give it a 7 (good) out of 10. [Comedy Drama]
Not just your typical comedy. This has a lot of heart and really sends a positive message about fostering children. Mark Wahlberg and Rose Byrne are both great but Octavia Spencer and Tig Notaro are scene stealers. Some of the comedy doesn’t work but you can forgive it for being such a lovely movie.
A heartwarming film that ties you to the family and foster kids. It recreates (via the support group and court) the turmoil of emotions that happens in the foster system. Pete and Ellie were a very likable couple, and individually well done characters. This film really cements my desire to foster rather than birth children of our own.

Funny, touching, incredible talent, with a really beautiful and important message. Loved every minute of it. The dynamic between the characters are gold.
