Jacob's Ladder 1990

Great movie with dark atmosphere and sooo sad..I don't think it was so mindblowing but it wasn't a simple movie for sure..7.7/10

The film that inspired the Silent Hill-Game Producer Keiichiro Toyama is a weird movie. It's centered on Tim Robbins Character. I don't want to spoil anything about the Movie. It's not the best one either, but the ending is not bad. It was very suprising for me.

"Jacob's Ladder" is really disorienting. It continually flashes between Jacob's life with his wife and kids, his girlfriend, fighting in Vietnam and visions of Hell and/or purgatory. The demons in Jacob's visions are truly frightening and the sanitarium scene is gruesome and downright off-putting. There's also a very effective scene at a party where Jacob sees something demonic kill his girlfriend in grotesque fashion.

Some of the details don't quite fit together well. The explanation for his hallucinations didn't really dovetail with the ending. The conclusion is satisfying, though.

There's no doubt that this influenced the look of a lot of Horror movies that came after it. The visuals were really powerful. I've never been a Tim Robbins fan and he wasn't a great fit for the lead role. He seemed almost as miscast as Matthew Modine in "Full Metal Jacket". But Danny Aiello was great and it was fun to see Jason Alexander do drama.

Very dark and weird. I was confused most of the time but it comes together at the end. Tim Robbins is good.

Somewhat saved by the final twist, because I find a lot of this not all that interesting. A lot of the mystery lacks intrigue due to weak, obvious directing choices, and most of the cinematography is too close, flat and lacking personality. The entire time I kept thinking about how much better this would be with David Lynch behind the camera, his abstract sensibilities would’ve been perfect for this material. This becomes even more apparent when considering that this isn’t even remotely interested in being a serious dramatic piece or character study, its interest lies in doing a surrealist horror take on the mystery genre. It’s clearly trying to be this weird mindf*ck, yet I found it too easy to hold a grasp on. The acting and dialogue are just fine, nothing standout or terrible. It’s passable because the final reveals recontextualize some scenes in an interesting way, but it’s also really frustrating as you can see the seeds for a much better film.

Watching this in 2021, so many movies have done a similar concept better especially because the movie isn't scary now. But props have to be given for the film that got the ball rolling. A fairly well written, well constructed, sad story with a lot of great performances that deserves a watch at least once for all fans of film

Wow, what a movie. I was really prepared for anything but this. A confusing game of light drama and dark thriller. Even if the film can be watched calmly at times, you are always pulled back into reality and confronted with scary and oppressive moments. Tim Robbins plays his role excellently and manages to maintain a solid facade that only one self can break through. I love it when films don't hand everything to the viewer on a silver platter. Here you have to decide for yourself what is true and what is not and what that means for you. Even though I wouldn't necessarily classify the film as a typical horror film, the subject is of course more than real and disturbing. In any case, the film gives you a lot to think about and definitely needs to be watched more often to be able to grasp the whole thing. A great and important movie.

I got halfway through but had to stop. I couldn't deal with the weird pacing and I wasn't able to connect with the characters.

I have been postponing Jacob's Ladder for quite some time, and today finally saw it. And i have to say, i wasn't impressed. Tim Robbins' performance is excellent, but the movie itself didn't catch me. At some points it felt interesting, but the rest of the time i was mostly confused on what i was seeing, guessing what was real and what wasn't; and for a 2 hour movie, that's a lot. Luckily, in the last 20 min they kinda gave an explanation, which had a final (although a bit predictable) twist in the end. This two pointers, at least in my book, gave it an extra point; specially after seeing so many "deep meaning, open interpretation" movies lately. Still, the story felt boring to me. Just a 5

Is not bad, but is slow.

Really dark psychological horror movie. I liked how it all came together. Robbins did a great job in this one. The story was decent and the twist was good. Even though I kinda saw that coming.

Better than Silent Hill movies...

I totally agree with the comments regarding the dark atmosphere that this movie emanates. Sometimes you can feel the agony and despair of the main character perfectly portrayed by Tim Robbins.
It is the kind of movie that you have to be continuously on his loop of attention because, the jumps back and forward of the plot can easily confuse or even lost the viewer.
Regarding the end, I personally think that is a bit messy because the main history was developing in an appropriate way until this climax breaks in leaving you with only two options, hate or love.

Good movie that highlights the effects of chemical warfare in war. Fact or fiction..,, reality or hallucinations... these are the questions about this movie.
