John Carter 2012

It sets up an interesting world but it is almost too much to fully appreciate. The action is fine, the acting is ok, the CGI is pretty good but overall the movie is watchable but I can see why it bombed at the box office.

Very good film, don't know why I didn't watch it sooner. Much better than Avatar imho.

I maintain that John Carter is an excellent movie with creature design that's better than decent and most of the CGI works. It should have started a series. The potential was there to completely riff off the books in a completely different way. The first problem of calling it John Carter instead of John Carter of Mars is silly but the storyline is solid if the wardrobe design was only so so. It's a VERY enjoyable romp. It's what Cowboys and Aliens wanted to be.

Some impressive visuals but somehow too much comical scenes to make this a serious movie.... It really is Disney cinema. But a good teaser to start reading the books

loading replies

Crap, crap, crap. Plot is nonsensical and random!

Entertaining, nice special effects, story is OK, but not what I thought it would be. Liked the little twist at the end. 6/10

It started off strong, but by the end of the first hour I was bored... and switched it off. I've checked out "Princess of Mars" from the library and I'll see if the very interesting premise holds up better in Burrough's hands. I've never read this series, but another author I like played around with Burrough's vision of Barsoom recently, and I'm intrigued enough to start reading.

Cheesy, ludicrous plot but highly enjoyable blockbuster sci-fi fantasy adventure.

Excellent film which was a surprise for me. I really enjoyed this movie. It certainly held my interest to the end. I loved the world created in this film it was wonderful, absolutely wonderful. Excellent story. Lovely arc in the film. Conceptually it was interesting. I enjoyed the science fiction. I love the love too. Watch it!!!!! Lynn Collins is just hauntingly stunning....wow.

Standard unlikely-hero-fights-to-save-the-girl story. More cliché than most Disney cartoons/animated movies unfortunately, 5/10 for me.

loading replies

Wow, liked it, remembered me little bit star wars. . :) one more argument, why best movies are those, which based on book.

loading replies

Good comic but poor film

loading replies

Holy crap! Where did this movie come from? After all of the bad press that this movie got I started watching it with low expectations and it utterly blew me away.

Great storytelling, plot, acting, and action. The bookends of the story really made this movie soar and the action between showed the hero's journey well.

I liked the movie very much! Still hope there's gonna be a sequel. But because of the poor box office results, it's more than unlikely... Such a shame! The world needs Sci-Fi movies like this!

For a Disney movie this one was a let down although watchable.

"We do not cause the destruction of a world, Captain Carter. We simply manage it."

Knowing that the novels inspired so many iconic franchises, I was curious what they would do this this. I think John Carter was miscast, but I do like the feel of this world and the creature design is good in a "fun" way. If this ever gets remade I would love a less kid-friendly approach with del Toro style creatures.

It's a repeating theme. Beautiful movies with fantastic effects based on wonderful stories that are somehow instantly forgettable. This personifies "John Carter". I wanted to love this movie. It's based on an old Burroughs novel that tells a fantastic tale of adventure. But now that we possess the technology to create the wonderful worlds and beasts that make up the beloved old novels, no one can adopt them to the big screen.

Again, this looks amazing and many of the effects are breathtaking. This is worth a look because it's such wonderful eye candy but that's really the extent of its value.

Thoroughly enjoyable and criminally underrated. An epic adventure that should have spawned its sequels - or give it a series on streaming now...

It's clear to me from watching it 9 years after seeing it on its release that this film has been woefully misjudged. With all of the recent praise lauded on The Mandalorian, this film deserved it more.

The original material has been foraged many times over the years - Star Wars and Stargate are the most obvious to borrow ideas from it. I also see a debt to it from Valerian (that Luc Besson film that almost worked).

If this were made today as a streaming series, it'd be huge. Come on, Disney+.

Lynn Collins was fantastic. Faults - Taylor Kitsch warmed up but was a little monotonous at the beginning. There's maybe one action sequence too many.

Other than that. Enjoyed it more on a second viewing than when it was released.

8.5/10

A hypersexualized fantasy story about two people I don't care about in a world that makes no sense. Thanks, I'll pass next time

Better then I expected. But I really was bored sometimes. A little bit too long.

This was an excellent movie. A perfect mix-up of science fiction and fantasy.

Andrew Stanton did it again! After directing the sublime Pixar movies Finding Nemo and Wall-E he shows that he can also direct a live-action movie without any suffer in quality.

For anyone wanting to know why John Carter was able to jump so high: because of Mars smaller size in comparison to earth, the gravity is also lower. However they greatly exaggerated the additional strength it would give John Carter and how far he would be able to jump. It does look cool however, and isn't that what it is all about?

This was an excellent way to spend 2 hours of my time. I am glad i saw it, and i will no doubt see it again very soon.

a good old-fashioned adventure fantasy film and well worth sitting back with your popcorn and be entertained.
Not sure why the negative comments. It's a great story, script and acting with some wonderful special effects.
Strap in and give it a watch.

Nobody knows that half of the si-if movies are ripped of this story (star wars for example).

What are you all on something!? This is the worst movie ever made !

loading replies

Unfulfilled potential, still narrowly liked it.

'John Carter' can feel underdeveloped and underwhelming, you could even argue it aimed to replicate 'Avatar', but there's enough there that allowed me to find a fair amount of enjoyment.

Taylor Kitsch is alright, I rate him, but a more convincing lead performance was necessary in my opinion. The rest of the cast, despite some well known names, fail to deliver anything noteworthy. Willem Dafoe works as Tars Tarkas, though only due to his distinctive voice; none of his dialogue etc. stand outs. The likes Samantha Morton, Mark Strong and Bryan Cranston give forgettable performances; arguably not their fault.

The premise has all the possibilities to be great, sadly the film fails to make their mark with it. The ending is extremely rushed, even for a 132 minute production. Visually it's good, but that's one of very few plus points - I haven't got many truth be told, but anything less than a 7* feels harsh.

Well, it's not a very exciting story, I wonder why Disney thought there would be a whole franchise out of it.

loading replies

I used to like a lot those books back in a years. Unfortunately, the movie doesn't meet the expectations. It feels very rushed and chaotic. And adding all this magic medallion crap with the intergalactic evil immortals makes it much worse, more generics. It would be better if they didn't rush several books into one movie and just made it by the first book. The books are way more genuine and interesting. So no wonder to me it sink in a box office.

loading replies

Yeah. I think it’s fair to rate it fair. It’s production quality is really high and it looks good but the story and acting, especially from Kitsch, was very weak.

Well. I wasn’t bored and it had a good pace and didn’t feel like a 2 h movie. I’ve seen so many much worse movies.

loading replies

I have watched this film few times now and I enjoyed it every time. I have no idea why this flopped on release, but I can recommend this for every fan of fantasy adventure movies.

loading replies

One of the real last risky movies that Disney made, and it’s easy to see why they haven’t continued. It’s not “bad” necessarily, but it lacks a mass appeal that will lure people in to make money. It’s fine, there’s good action. Set pieces are cool. But I wouldn’t go out of my way to watch or recommend this. There is an audience out there that will surely love it though.

Rating: 1.5/5 - 6/10 - Not Recommended to Everyone

I want more.
It definitely doesn't deserve all the shit that gets thrown at it by those pesky philistines.

One of my favorite movies of all time

loading replies

On second viewing the bookends which I hated so much do feel less jarring. I still think the movie is better off without them for the most part.

loading replies

Not so bad as I thought. Reminds me of 90s sci-fi. the turning point in the end was very nice too. The story is a little blunt, but the world created and the action scenes were nice. Don't know why that film don't succeed. It's Cleary created for family/children. But, maybe the public wanted some "adult like" stuff.

Very entertaining movie.Still don't undestand why it failed.
