Mary Elizabeth Winsted should be in an Alien franchise. Strong Ellen Ripley vibes in Kate.
The plot kept me interested throughout the whole movie, with a good twist, the fighting was decent and I was very charmed by Miku Martineau her performance. And it’s small things that make me love it: the way Japanese characters speak Japanese to each other (I hate when movies make non native English speaking characters talk English to each other) how you hear only Japanese music in this movie set in Japan or how people actually run out of ammo frequently while shooting their guns. I think it’s a very well done movie over all.
It also gave me a little bit of a Cyberpunk 2077 vibe but I’m not sure if that’s just cause of the neon lights, the protagonist with a time limit cause they’re dying thanks to a mission gone wrong, the powerful Japanese as the antagonist or because there’s someone named V. Also fun but unrelated: BAND-MAID are in this!! My favorite rock band!!!
legitimately such a visually stunning and fun entry into the action genre. the number of times bullets run out is one of my favorite aspects of the action sequences, but also there's a scene later on that, combined with mary elizabeth winstead's increasingly horrifying deterioration, puts this on my body horror list. it's not a horror, but it's pretty and there's bodies being horrific, so it works. i'm really digging the recent action films that use just enough stylistic choices borrowed from video games to bump up the immersion.
when i was checking on who the stunt coordinators were i saw some Highly Bitter articles calling this a john wick clone but honestly every action movie follows a formula because the formula works and being poisoned with radiation is a great reason for revenge even if it didn't involve a dog.
also, i don't even fucking care i loved that ridiculous car chase scene
Another entry in the Netflix "movie of the week so don't be disappointed when it isn't as good as a proper movie" category.
Some excellent super-hard violence. A very good turn by MEW. Great use of Japan.
But... Very predictable and disappointing plot. Some of the dialogue is really simplistic and out of character.
Enjoyable watch that is visually excellent but really heavily let down by its formulaic plot.
6.5/10
Just the typical cliche story. Betrayed by someone that the protagonist thinks is their friend but turns out to be the one who puts out a hit on said protagonist. Lame
Apart from Mary Elizabeth Winstead, there's no reason to watch this.
Meh! You have nothing else to watch this movie is bearable.
Is Kate Netflix’s cynical version of John Wick and Atomic Blonde? Yes. Was it placed in a hyper stylized Japanese setting to fit some algorithmic attention grabbing thumbnail and trailer? Yes. Am I ashamed for liking it so much? Yes.
i came for mary elizabeth winstead and then i came because of miyavi :asterisk_symbol:ba dum tsss:asterisk_symbol:
Winstead is great but the film underwhelms. The action is well handled but the story is flimsy and predictable.
Mary Elizabeth Winstead is a badass!
This has all been done before but not by Mary Elizabeth Winstead and the near ultra violent actions scenes bring this nicely to life.
This was a good movie. Action, drama, suspense. 7.6/10
Awesome movie. Reminds me of Night Teeth and Die Hard. It's fun and not boring.
Not the best story but quite a lot of action and really good (although brutal) fight choreographies.
That fighting stickmen intro was very cool, well done! I also loved the beautiful aerial shots at the beginning. So beautiful in 4K <3 I didn't expect it to start at daytime / an assassination happening in the middle of the day but those scenes are so crisp/sharp, which is quite nice. But of course I still prefer the night scenes with neon lights, reflections, etc.
It's nice that Woody Harrelson is in this movie - his voice is so great :D It's also nice that Kate simply calls him V (reminds me of Cyberpunk 2077 xD).
That car with all of that lighting was quite funny but of course an unfortunate choice. The car chase scenes were very interesting. The speed was way too fast and even the physics looked unrealistic but I assume that's how it's intended (they probably did it pretty much entirely with CGI in an artistic way). It's fake but it looks cool / is quite interesting.
That radiation poisoning was very mean and really sucked. It's kinda frustrating the first few minutes make it clear that the protagonist will die. At least I didn't get attached to her that way so I guess it's still better then letting her die unexpectedly.
I still find those high pitched chinese songs strange btw :D But the girl band was quite good - I liked that!
Lot's of empty magazines in this movie :D Both inside and outside guns... Those fighting choreographies are really amazing. Especially those with the knives. Also quite raw/brutal though :o I'm quite surprised that this is rated 16. I mean they even decapitated that guy ("businessman" :D) at the end! WTF?!? :D
Random fun fact: There was an ad/sign for "Frozen 2" in the background of one shot.
That kid is so strange but also pretty funny. As was the scene where Kate said "Buh", that guy fell over in horror/panic, and all of the other guys just started laughing... :D Plus that scene where that kid /little girl acted like she had a gun but Kate was doing the shooting.
Anyway, at least Kate got one last boom boom lemon before she died :D And she got to make V's death personal (shooting him in the gut like he taught her). And she got to die infront of that cute neon light cat :D
The "twists" at the end weren't really surprising but that seems intended and I'm perfectly fine with it. They slowly raised the suspicions that V isn't the "good guy" and of course it wouldn't make sense for Kate to shoot Kijima (that guy really has style btw!).
I didn't knew Mary Elizabeth Winstead before this movie and was a bit concerned when I saw her in the first shot but she did really well. She was quite badass and those fight choreographies and stunts were really good!
I just don't know what to say for this movie....sigh
The first 20 minutes is just not good at all. I had to force myself to keep watching at least twice before I gave up. Too bad too because I really like both Winstead and Harrelson.
Episode 10x03
You are dying, you have a few hours to live and you are a rag. Ah but you can handle all kinds of thugs, ninjas and a whole mafia like the Yakuza like nothing ... well no: without first doing a poorly synchronized choreography of punches and flying kicks in the style of Neo vs Mr. Smith. Wow ... doesn't it sound like something to you? You'll also have time for some cheap sentimentality, as cheap is a certain chase scene with cheeky CGI. All this wrapped in a modern cyberpunk neon atmosphere in the city of Tokyo reminiscent of the NFS Underground. Regular, expendable.
Netflix’s latest action-thriller Kate uses many of the same routine tropes that have littered the hitman subgenre for decades, and especially those ones that have become more common in the wake of John Wick’s success. With a paper-thin plot, the story offers nothing to cherish but the charming Mary Elizabeth's stylized action sequences and combat choreography in the backdrop of Japanese clan wars make up for a decent predictable thriller. The screenplay is fast-paced and doesn't waste any time but the second half seems to drag a lot. Except for Mary's character you don't see depth in any other character. Watch it if you like brutal action films even if it is predictable.

You ever wonder what Crank would be like if they made it serious? Or how about John Wick if it was a straight to VOD flick? Well, here's your answer. I really like Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and she has decent enough action chops here, but the story and writing sets her up for just as many cringe-worthy scenes as fun fight scenes. Add to that a plot that is paint-by-numbers and telegraphing any surprises from miles away and you have a pretty stock standard action flick. And it's ok for what it is, but don't expect anything more.
Boring movie, a Marie Sue characters are always Lame.
a female version of the John Wick formula. pretty good movie
Simply said, this is a solid action movie. No surprises. Just enjoy.
How I rate:
1-3  = seriously! don't waste your time
4-6  = you may or may not enjoy this
7-8  = I expect you will like this too
9-10  = movies and TV shows I really love!
Thank you Netflix... I'm serious. Best use of slowmo in a while. It has swords, uzis, yakuza, tattoos, and plenty of neon. I'm guessing I will not be the only fan. It also has a perfectly creepy Woody. This movie made my day. Very entertaining and worth the time.
Mary Elizabeth Winstead stars in the Netflix action film Kate. When a professional assassin discovers that she’s been poisoned and only has hours left to live, she uses that time to track down those responsible and makes some disturbing discoveries. Winstead gives an incredible performance, and is backed by Woody Harrelson and newcomer Miku Patricia Martineau (who has great on-screen chemistry with Winstead). And, the fight scenes are especially well-done and have a gritty intensity to them. Also, the soundtrack adds a lot energy to film and heightens the action scenes. A high-adrenaline thriller, Kate is tremendously entertaining.
(594-word review) I wasn't expecting much from this film. It's not that I thought it'd be less than decent. It's that I never would've expected this. I usually go into the fray of films with a semi-conscious/borderline subconscious mindset of believing there will be enough entertainment, at the very least. That's usually the case, not something more or even something less: whether in the direction of good or bad, being detached on some level/not expecting much shows that while I enjoyed a film, it's never gone beyond that.
So, imagine my surprise when this one slithers in/when I selected this one and that it had the effect that it did. It was genuinely great, and it even tugged at the heartstrings in subtle ways regarding Kate and Ani, concluding with a more powerful tug with the final confrontation, particularly at the end of it/the film. Which was peculiar and surprising, also new for me because I don't think any I've watched ever has done that.
That alone, and for accomplishing that, is enough to present to it the honor of being given this rating. It's an unforgettable feeling. When films hit you like this, the ones that didn't do so pale in comparison, even if they were decent enough with the first viewing and even after experiencing that feeling with ones that "go further."
While the fight choreography, the action sequence direction, and Lyle Vincent's cinematography were all good (the fight choreography/action sequences, in particular, were well-done: and the cinematography had a pretty aesthetic, vibrant and photogenic at times, which I loved), it was the performances by the two leads that's the best aspect, especially their chemistry.
Mary Elizabeth Winstead (who's incredibly attractive – sorry, my mistake: HOT; it's likely been said and should continue) was fantastic, but Miku Martineau was the surprising cast member who held her own, delivering a compelling performance. The chemistry between these two actresses was the most effective element, and it made the film for me; it landed tremendously well.
Performance-wise, as far as the others are concerned, Tadanobu Asano and Jun Kunimura were the standouts, while Woody Harrelson was alright. I thought Jun was the best. The whole honor thing in Japanese culture and the older, well-mannered, wise ambiance on his character, which he conveyed well, not to mention the scenes with Kijima and Kate, were contributing factors.
Both the score and the soundtrack were also good. Nathan Barr (the composer) did a good job composing the score. Liza Richardson (the music supervisor), however, was the star. The songs she picked were great, especially "Kinjitou" by Reol at the end credits.
And the projection mapping of Tokyo Ghoul on the building was unexpected but a pleasant surprise, as was the car chase sequence, which, while fanciful, was an unusual route to go; so, I'll give credit where credit is due for that.
Many people had a problem with the plot and its predictability, which, oddly enough (given how that can sometimes be something I also had/have an issue with), wasn't an issue with this one. I saw it immediately, but I won't pretend it's not the truth; I acknowledge it. Even so, I didn't care. Maybe those people needed to focus more on the pure hotness of Mary Elizabeth Winstead because, wow: so, so, so, so HOT. Get your priorities straight.
Simply put, Mary Elizabeth Winstead is hot. She/her chemistry with Miku Martineau does the carrying, with help from the action sequences, the fight choreography, and the visuals. The plot predictability isn't an issue.
I lasted until the 28th minute and I think that deserves recognition... Don't expect a recommendation and Woody Harrelson is a shame there.
This was really good but slightly generic in points hence why I've given it an 8.
Great acting from Mary Winstead, playing with lots of emotions. However, the story is quite a predictable cliché. Fair movie overall, some good action scenes, and picture and music were good.
While Kate starts out OK and Winstead is a good lead it just dulls out with a paper thin and predictable plot seen in countless other action movies before. To not fall into the mould they attempt to style things up by being quirky and pimping out the Japanese setting but it's just way too tryhard for it's own good. As soon as she put on the glasses for the final showdown I was pretty much done with it. I don't really care for slow-mo action scenes when they're silly and unimpressive thanks to her being a Mary Sue let alone the lame confrontation with the antagonist.
love this ! much love from sri lanka
Extremely predictable, but really fun to watch it. Worth it.
Starts off OK but the story then peters out about half way through and becomes quite mundane and pretty predictable. They try to do a good twist at the end but we kind of know it's coming anyway so it ends up being an anti-climax. Mary Elizabeth Winstead has some great promise as an actress though. She was about the only good aspect of the movie.
Quite good except for the predictable twist. Good action and great fx!
One of the better "GIrl Power" films of late
This is to violent and sadistic movie and could not watch it since she went on killing frenzy in Japanese restaurant... Simply disgusting
Like whiskey in a perfume bottle, the emotional touch is superfluous.
One of the better John Wick rip-offs with solid special effects and striking cinematography, though it wastes too much of its runtime on sentiment.
PS Miku Martineau was a revelation!
And it got overheated, imagine, they poisoned her and she will die in 24 hours. Good action scenes and good for the protagonists
Great fight choreography & kept me entertained throughout. Winstead is definitely a star.
I wasn't expecting much because I've been disappointed by films like this before, but Mary Elizabeth delivered female John Wick badass vibes and I live for it. I would love to see her in more roles like this. The plot was interesting all the way through and the visuals were cool af.
Great film Mary Elizabeth Winstead was perfect in her role Netflix should make at least a sequel
Some Pros
Stylish action
Lead actress was special
Some Negs
It lags
Soundtrack
The casting, the visuals, cinematography, script, and soundtrack are the perfect combination for a movie i expected nothing from and got more than Anna, Ava, Colombiana, and (dare i say it?!?) Black Widow.
Nice movie. It has some wonderful “John Wick” and “Ghost in the Shell” vibes. :star_struck::thumbsup:
Would be better if they didn't do the ridiculous slow-mo and the dodgy screaming
Damn! Mary Elizabeth Winstead can truly carry an action movie on her own! Impressive badass bitch performance. I got some sweet Jason Bourne vibes.
Overall, a solid action movie that really makes you want some Boom Boom Lemon.
I almost didn't watch this because the plot seemed pretty basic. Which it is. But even a basic plot can shine with some great fight scenes and some story telling sprinkled in the mix.
BAND-MAID, Chanmina, Reol - dope ass soundtrack, good classical Japanese actors with Jun Kunimura, a random Miyavi appears and some dope ass action scenes. Really can not complain at all with this. Wondering if this was aimed at a Japanese audience or at weebs? Either way, gimme more of this Netflix! Oh and I hope Miku Martineau has a bright future ahead, she has potential!
it’s nothing new but this was genuinely interesting. other than some hammy dialogue and random but expected racism—par for the course of action movies set in ‘foreign’ countries, i guess—it was a good time. MEW and the kid had great chemistry and carried the film for sure. the makeup and stunt department too. id love a sequel but idk how they’d pull it off. though, they make sequels of other dominant formulaic action movies all the time so if they really wanted, they could come up with something.
Meh, another Netflix movie. That car gci damn. Beside that, the fights are good, but thats it. I hate movies that the bad guys die with one shoot, and the good guys only get hurt.
Aside from the ugly CGI car chase scene it was pretty decent. Girls can kick butt too duh!
Crank, but it's all John Wick style fight scenes instead of humour.
I very much enjoyed it.
Jon Wick but female version. Boring...
Delivers pretty much what the posters & trailer promise - a sugary treat that fades from memory and soon you crave another fix. Mary-Elizabeth Winstead always a delight to watch, and the film has its moments - a sunglasses-MEW strutting - but even she can't elevate this Léon-clone to iconic status.
Quite the surprise. Not bad, not bad at all. Simple story, with few characters, but entertaining. Maybe just some of the fight choreography could be better. Some of the fights looked fake, too staged.
I can't wait for this, I can't wait to see Woody Harrelson and Tadanobu Asano!!

Very entertaining non stop action movie. I really enjoyed this movie. Kate was great. Sadly I don't think there will be a sequel unless something miraculous happens! Very entertaining  :thumbsup_tone1::grin:
