I don't watch many tragedies, but a film hasn't had such an effect on me in a long time. I believe this was my first Lillian Gish film, and she definitely made this film, not to say the other actors were lacking... but a low fidelity silent film from nearly a hundred years ago having me on the edge of my seat, engrossed in the travails of its caricatures, and dreading their fate, is not something that is lightly achieved. This film made me want to be a better human.
