Don't waste your time.. I was expecting something in the lines of Paranormal Activity but got a crappy mockumentary pointless twist of a ending..
The most boring movie I've ever seen. A cheap "documentary" where everything is explained through "interviews". Don't watch it.
This must be one of the most boring movies i've ever seen, i got disapointed i was expecting something scary when i heard this movie was banned in my contry, maybe it was becuase it really sucks.
One of the most unique horror movies I have seen in awhile. Lake Mungo is structured as if it were a crime documentary and it successfully portrays the events occurring in this film as almost undeniably true, though it does achieve this through sacrificing quite a few things you would see in a normal film. Just like all crime documentaries there isn't a big payoff and often there are more questions created than answered. This movie understands that the most terrifying things are the ones left unknown to us and uses an impressive amount of restraint to achieve a sense of unknown dread that takes a hold of you and never lets go even after the film is finished.
In short do not go into this movie expecting any type of conventional horror film. Here is a quick test for you to whether or not you'll enjoy Lake Mungo: Do you find documentaries boring? If the answer is yes than you most likely will find Lake Mungo uneventful and boring also. But if the answer is no it is most definitely worth the watch.
Slow and boring found footage fake documentary ghost story. The story itself was mildly compelling, but wasn't really serviced by being told in a visual medium. Super boring to watch.
hype about everything tuns out nothing. Waste of time, bandwidth and precious disk space.
Paranormal Activity meets The Office in Australia.
I went into Lake Mungo not knowing what it was about, all I knew that it was a mockumentary, and damn it is a good one!
The slow pace, the acting, the way they slowly reveal what really was going on in the life of Alice Palmer, those images, it all is very creepy. Not in a like very scary way but it is just so unsettling. Especially when you watch it in the middle of the night.
The director/writer Joel Anderson did a really good job with this one, his one and only film. He has you on your those during the whole film and yet never makes you scared with like a jump scare. It is all psychological. No gore, no loud noises, just some still images.
The only thing I can tell, go in as blind as possible. Don't read anything about this one and just sit back and watch Lake Mungo.
I do not see how this movie is horror at all. We tried watching it with my fiancée, but we almost fell asleep as it was so boring. Definitely do not recommend watching this, please don't waste your time, as we have ours.
If you enjoy really long, extended takes of blurry photos and video stills being zoomed-in on, this is the movie for you. If you're looking for something creepy, dramatic, or in any way interesting, it's not. Those "Top 10 Scary ______ " YouTube slideshows with a monotone narrator are scarier and actually slightly more artistic.
Lake Mungo has all the ingredients, but never really puts them together to make anything of worth. Empty, lifeless, and starts feeling like a drag post the 30 minute mark. Unless you love slow burn mockumentaries, steer clear.
This was listed on a recently-curated list of horror films; the list was entitled 15 Horror Movies That Are So Scary, It’s Hard to Watch More Than Once.
I can definitely agree with the "It's Hard to Watch More Than Once" part but the rest of it is pure gibberish. Whomever placed this steaming turd on ANY list of "So Scary" movies has no idea what "scary" even means. This was inexcusable. There was nothing .... there was nothing even "creepy" about this thing. It just reeked. It was utterly ridiculous and a waste of time. In cases like this, I will normally point out something to the effect of "The very short runtime of less than 90 minutes at least made this tolerable.." but in Lake Mungo even that wasn't enough to save it. It blew chunks. An 84-minute runtime felt like 2 hours and 84 minutes. Snails have a faster pace than this smelly blob. As if the storyline weren't stupid enough, the cinematography looks like it was shot with a handheld (this was not intended to be a "found-footage" movie) iPhone... maybe an iPhone 4S or something. Maybe even a Nokia candybar (if anyone remembers those. Believe it or not, I still have some pictures from one I used to own.) It was absolutely awful and my recommendation - to ANYONE even remotely considering watching this - is to flee for your life. Avoid this one like it has the Black Plague. There is NOTHING - not even a short runtime - about this stinkpot that merits anyone wasting 84 minutes on it.
"It's Hard to Watch More Than Once" ? Yes.
"So Scary" ? Absolutely not. This was awful.
PS: I hardly ever give films a "1" rating (mainly because 'Weak Sauce' doesn't sound worse than 'Terrible', IMO) but in this case, I had to give it the absolute lowest rating Trakt would let me. This was just so bad that I don't ever want to make the mistake of watching it again. What a turd.
Thought I'd enjoy this one. I wanted to like this, but felt completely detached and uninvested throughout. I can dig a slow burn, but this was boring. Some scenes were well done, but not enough to go above a 3.5.
This is my second viewing of this film and I think I appreciated it much more this time around. The somber, understated nature of the storytelling and format definitely hit much better this time around, but I’m still not fully convinced it’s the masterpiece that some believe it is. Still, an intriguing, well flowing mystery with a few twists and turns makes this an enjoyable, spooky bedtime-story-on-film.
They added Alice's secret whore lifestyle just to extend the movie. It literally added nothing to the movie.
That pixel on that photo is probably a ghost not gonna lie
The mockumentary aspect is done really well. The plot (or rather b-plot?) is ok but it's a little all over the place... I like the idea that Alice killed herself because of the guilt she felt over what she did but it feels cluttered by Matt's Bigfoot decision.
I loved it! This was a very cool mockumentary. I think it was well done, but it’s definitely a very slow movie, that is meant for a niche audience. If you enjoy paranormal shows, and documentaries, or enjoy ghost hunting shows, and the type of shows with a person telling a story, with reenactment actors, than you’ll love this movie.
There are a lot of recommendations about this movie being very scary. It has it's moments, mostly generated by its grainy video clips showing the apparent ghost of a recently deceased family member. Personally, I'd compare this to "The Blair Witch Project". It's all about seeing what might be there and not actually having the threat in your face.
This has a number of twists and turns and the documentary style works to set an eerie mood. But I was surprised by how much this emphasized the trauma of losing a loved one and coming to terms with it. On that level, it was effective. As an actual Horror movie though, I guess it all depends on your definition of horror. There is no gore and maybe one semi-jump scare, so if those are your benchmarks for what a Horror movie should be, your going to be disappointed in this. However, if a creepy mood and a fear of the unknown is your measuring stick, enjoy. This will have you peering down hallways and glaring into darkened rooms.
A documentary style ghost story that has some creep factor but moves too slow which challenged my engagement.
It's a slow and methodical movie about loss and how people interact with it. It is slow paced and not about big scares all the time. It's pretty heart-wrenching, actually. If you want something akin to Paranormal activity, this isn't it.
Ryan Hollinger has made a video on it. Maybe he can say it better than I.
Like sleeping with a cold can of cola in your bed, you're going to get chills when you're least ready for it.
An efficient, atmospheric and often chilling Australian low budget found footage film that will linger with you like a ghost long after you turn it off...
Pretty solid horror mockumentary. A bit too slow to get to the exciting part. I mean every documentary drags a lot so I guess that's what they're going for. It's so depressing and sad. It gave me goosebumps and left unsettling feeling even after it finished.

This movie explores and portrays the horrific side of depression, loss, confusion and desperation. Following a family trying to understand their daughter while piecing their life together after just loosing her. the way in which I read this movie is that Alice killed herself, after hiding her depression from the ones closest to her, and in the end even hiding it from the world (at lake mungo). The movie follows her family in their attempt to understand why she died, slowly piecing together the remenants of the life she kept secret from them. All the while still seeing her in the house, pushing them to look Draper. When they eventually find the last piece of evidence (the phone) which contains Alices interaction with her deepest fear and want which is to end her life. Her family are able to let go and Alice with them. The performances and b-roll where increadible. the whole movie felt very real. An amazing depiction of how ghosts are a manifestation of people’s pain. 10/10
