Layla M. 2016

Interesting enough story about radicalisation, but not enough about the why.

I'm glad the movie didn't try to explain everything. But it ended up having less depth than I had hoped. The film tries to cover too much ground within its limited running time, and as a result, each segment taken for itself is not fleshed out enough to be truly convincing / insightful. 1) In Amersterdam, Layla's family reachts surpisingly listlessly to her growing extremism. 2) On the road, both the "romance" and the escalation in the woods seems rushed. 3) In Amman, Layla's desillusionment happens surprisingly quickly, as does her boyfriend's transformation from director to misogynous asshole to suicide bomber.
