I watched this movie for the 3rd time today. I always love the visuals and the incredible cgi. This movie has some of the best cgi you will ever see, it's incredible. The movie is worth seeing for the visuals alone, not to mention the brilliant sound editing and great acting from Sharma.
Now here come spoilers so stop reading if you haven't seen the movie.
Now in the past I have criticized this movie for the ending. The movie seems to be telling the audience that despite the clear allegory of the animals story, that is the one you should believe. I don't think that is the case. The story Pi told was clearly allegorical and the plot rests on that. The zebra who's leg is broken was a sailor who was hurt, the orangutan was his mother, the hyena was the cook and the tiger was pi. The sailor was hurt and the cook killed him and ate him. The mother attacked the cook and the cook killed her. Pi then kills the cook. In the story the zebra is killed and eaten by the hyena and the orangutan attacks the hyena and ends up getting killed. The tiger kills the hyena. The movie shows the events of the story and then uses the rest of the movie to show a battle between Pi and the tiger. This represents pis battle with this incredible anger inside of him. Pi says in the movie that the tiger can't be tamed but it can be trained. When Pi survives the tiger leaves unceremoniously. The story represents Pi's battle with himself and his deliverance has freed him from anger. The first 2 times I watched it I thought the ending was saying we are supposed to believe the animals story. It ends with the reporter saying he likes the animals story better and pi responding "and so it goes with God" I always thought pi was saying that is the true story, this time I believe he's saying that's the story God also chooses to believe, as if to say Pi believes God has forgiven him for what he's done. The reporter then opens the report and shows how the investigators wrote about the Bengal tiger story, I always thought this was stupid when they clearly believed the true story, I realize this time that they were covering his ass. I always thought the ending to the movie was flawed for making us believe the ridiculous story, I realize now that was the wrong way to look at it.

Overall LIfe of Pi is one of my favorite films of the last few years, featuring some of the best computer work out there. 9/10.

Castaway meets Planet Earth with a few pointed spiritual overtones thrown in for good measure. As the plot slowly develops, it takes the slant of a classical fantasy adventure, akin to the serial novels and comic strips of the early 20th century, granting the screen an entrancing, otherworldly sensibility. As is, that would've been a perfectly acceptable stylistic decision - after all, director Ang Lee's Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon made no apologies for its less-grounded moments - but such stylish exaggerations actually become an essential part of the telling when an admission in the final act changes everything we'd just seen.
Magnificently composed and spectacularly beautiful, it would be worth watching for the eye candy alone. Lee's restraint in this regard is especially impressive; he knows precisely when his audience will want to linger in a moment and indulges them with one breath-catching vista after another. Kudos to the enormous team of effects artists; their combined efforts have produced a cinematic masterpiece.
A bit sluggish at times, with a few moments that tease the boundaries of plausibility, its visuals are a revelation and I'm still considering some of the story's underlying meanings a day later. Worth experiencing.
Es una perdida de tiempo, no se salva nada, es basura que en 10 años sera olvidada. esta muy sobre valorada.
Please read the book, it is just amazing no movie can ever give it credit!
This movie has been in my library for a long time. Unwatched.
I prejudiced this movie too much.
Why? Because I thought, it is a movie about a boy who's getting in trouble, and finds himself on a small rescue boat on the ocean with a tiger. And the tiger. is getting his very best friend, they r gonna survive and: HAPPY END.
A Boy.
A Tiger.
On a boat.
Before watching this movie I thought, okay, this might get REALLY boring. Well I did not got bored at all! There was so much happing all the time.
I do not want to spoiler, but I loved the ending as well. Not the real big Hollywood - Ending where everyone is happy.
Stupid plot. Well, it wasn't.
When you watch this movie, you will get funny scenes (especially in the beginning), and really good actors.
You get stunning pictures and I do not mean the tiger by that. Sure the tiger / animals were GREAT, but I loved the pictures around the boat really much.
Life of Pi was one of the best movies I have seen this year... and it is October right now ;)
8/10
Life of Pi is simply magnificent, a truly masterpiece and is now part of my all-time favorite movies.
From the technical point of view, it is astonishing, the colors dance with the forms to create landscapes to take your breath away, it is amazing to see how realistic a CGI can be nowadays, even if they have filmed 4 different tigers, Suraj Sharma (Pi) was never even near a real tiger.
Life of Pi is not just a survival story of a castaway in challenging conditions. While all this is present, it is a simple fixture for a table of allegorical representations of several life happenings, survival instinct, faith and affection. Interconnected, the film makes no judgments about the authority in relation to each other, leaving the choice to the viewer, who will decide according to his own disposition on life, faith and relationships.
The history is just perfect, it is full with symbolic meanings that you only realize at the end of the movie, both the introducing and the ending wrap the main history giving it even more meaning.
Ang Lee performs probably the most significant film of his career with the adaptation of the book bythe canadian Yann Martel. The reflection of Taiwanese filmmaker is noticeable in the way each image with meaning grabs and transforms simple scenarios as a boat on the water to subliminal images full of spiritualism.
Life of Pi is a technical marvel and a treasure film destined to become a modern classic. In my personal opinion, this is a movie you must see, and ofc among the best of the year.
Absolutely brilliant CGI. A must watch purely for visuals, CGI and cinematography. And please don't miss the intro.
Magical, but slow in some parts. You may enjoy that though.
simply amazing! big up Ann Lee!!!!
This is art, storytelling and VFX at his best in a single movie.
My first rewatch since I saw it for the first time when it came out and Life of Pi continues to be absolutely wonderful. A true visual masterpiece.
Mostly what I wanted to remove from this second viewing was to pay more attention to details and see if my interpretation of the story could be different. It wasn't. I still have the same idea about the story.
Is very interesting how some more complex films might cause different emotions and ideas on every person. This film might be seen from many different perspectives and that's what's the best of it.
Ang Lee totally deserved the oscar for Best Director because all of the things about this films were impeccably done.
CGI beefs up the hype and does favours for this movie but the story line and acting drag.
It's definitely interesting and a visually stunning movie. The story is very good (of course, it's based on the book) with a fascinating ending. Good tension build up. Definitely worth a look. Some of the effects look a little fake at times, but mostly it's pretty clean. Again, I can't say much more about this without spoiling it, so see it for yourself.
Beautiful tale of faith and perseverance. Visually stunning.
Stunning effects and storyline.
I can honestly say that, while I really believe that movies don't need technology such as 3D to 'be better,' this one takes the cake. Ang Lee masters the 3D technique with a visually stunning film, one that had me drooling over the beautiful scenes, from one to the next. Really, the word 'beautiful' is a gross understatement here. I am proud to end 2012 with probably the most beautiful film in recent memory.
Amazing movie. Well worth the money to watch it on a huge IMAX screen :)
The story was engrossing and the visual amazing. I was never bored, even through the slow scenes. It's not one of those movie I can re-watch over and over, but it did a great job the first time through.
Good film, not exactly what I expected but well worth a watch. I watched in 3D which coupled with the great work done with CGI it makes this film worth a watch for the visuals alone
Très belles images. L'histoire l'est un peu moins, mais ça vaut le détour...
the best movies for ever
the best movies for ever
The movie has one strong feature, the visuals. As for the rest of the movie while quite nice, has some flaws.
The narration that surrounds the story isn't that great. The first 30 minutes are rather unimpressive and the author listening Pi's story puts a huge dent in there.. he is so emotionless (maybe because of editing together previous footage that was made with Tobey Maguire in there?). I could also have done without the remark "this will make you belive in god", he really is telling the wrong kind of story for something like that.
The good part is on the boat which speaks for the director keeping things that engaging. Same goes for Suraj Sharma for his belivable acting with only a CGI counterpart :). As for the "twist" ending, it might have worked better in the book as we get cheated here with a visual story vs a spoken one which isn't really fair at all (not that I cared for the religious part anyways - it is not "deep" at all).
I'm ok with it winning some Oscars although I wouldn't have given it the one for Cinematography, given that most of it was done with the help of CG which is a bit "easy".
Amazing cgi but if I'm really honest I started to get bored watching it.
Sweet holy motherf*****
The trailer just knocked me out of my shoes!
What a freaking eye-candy :O :O :O
First part a bit slow, but the story is original and CGI really eye-stunning. Just didn't like the overwhelming focus on religion
There is no doubt cinematography is amazing, and the story - when he summarizes it at the end - is very good too, but I didn't consider it an outstanding film from the beginning until the end.
Am I the only one that seen the symbolism between his mum and dad vs the orangutang and tiger?…
Perhaps it wasnt the tiger and orangutang thay survived but it was his mum and dad. The whole event was actually the son standing up to his dad whiles stuck on the boat?…
It‘s been 10 years since I watched this movie for the first time. I remember that I didn‘t like it all that much back then. I guess I just had the wrong expectations. Now after watching it for the second time, I loved it. The story is brilliant and the visuals are breathtaking. You wouldn‘t believe this movie is over 10 years old. The CGI holds up extremely well. I also recommend watching it in 3D. It brings the movie to a whole new level of amazement.
Thank you Vishnu, for introducing me to Christ.
some shots in this movie are so beautiful i wanted to straight up die
Pretty faithful adaptation of the book. But I didn’t like the book much, so.
This was a visual experience.
While slow in parts, this was an enjoyable story and the journey was worth investing in.
8/10 - Great film, one that I'll happily watch again
Beautiful Pictures and an interesting story about the perversity of the perception of reality.
unique experience and beautiful story
this movie is too special for me
Probably the most picturesque movie I've ever seen. It was so beautiful. The story wasn't too much, but enough to keep you going through out. So very cleverly told. I absolutely adore this movie.
It starts a little slow but ends strong. There are some incredible visuals.
The film Life of Pi is a terribly overrated film. Wait, I take that back - the first hour and fifty five minutes are dull. The last five minutes save the day, even though they essentially nullify everything that we had just witnessed. Confused? Lets get to it.
If you paid attention you probably realized that the second story was actually the same as the original story. The difference this time was that the cook was the hyena, the Buddhist was the zebra and the orangutan was his mother. The tiger was the boy, or rather the boy's animalistic/survival persona.
The film then cuts back to the writer and the storyteller. The writer asks the man which story is the truth, and the man asks the writer which story he preferred.
"I prefer the first story" the writer answers.
"And so it is with God" answers the man.
Those six words made this whole dopey film worthwhile on soooooo many levels. It very much reminded me of a Woody Allen movie in that he would use a device like this (and not take almost 2 hours to do it) to try to show how the followers of religion choose to believe something because they want to believe it.

Película almibarada con final previsible y demasiado larga. Totalmente prescindible.
Boy, tiger and a lot of animals. That's all. 7 of 10.
Triumph of form over substance. Great pictures, effects, and music. Monologues little pompous. For the first time my favorite character in the film was a tiger. :)
Ang Lee's gorgeous visuals are worth the watch. Also, I find the film LIFE OF PI much less annoying than the book in its conclusion, thanks to Lee's use of reflection with Richard Parker. So there's that.
Very nice sceneries and idea..a movie fir a cinema for 1 time watch
Its a good movie and story. I expected more with all the hype around the movie. It's not a waste of time, but I would probably not watch it again.
A few parts had really cool visuals. There's a lesson behind the whole movie that clicks at the end. Not really my kind of film, but I've sat through far worse.
really very poor telling of the book. They said it was unfilmable and fair play to them for trying but its a failure overall.
Beautifully filmed and worth watching in 3-D, but that is the sole positive aspect of this film. Maybe I should have read the book first, but it's a trivially didactic film that's supposed to enlighten us about life, "faith," and fate, and then add some pseudo-philosophical thought of "hey--all religions and cultures are equal and worthy, so let's all love one another." I would call this a senseless piece of drabble that's beautifully filmed, but since it is much too long of a work to be termed drabble, I'd just call it boring. Prepare the eye-rolling.
I watched the trailer too and was completely engrossed. I wanted to watch this movie but all the shows were full.
Managed to watch it a couple of weeks later and came out sorely disappointed. With all the rave reviews and the brilliant trailer, I came out less than satisfied. I agree that the story was good, but somehow left me too bored. It was way too slow, unlike the trailer. And the whale that I came to watch, was only in ONE scene?!
It was extravagantly fantastical, of course, but I feel Avatar had a better visual scenery than this one. Avatar had more colours and though I know that this pure fantasy, Avatar, in its own way, was more believable too.
The first half does not have much of a pace and I tried really hard to not fall asleep. There was a bit of humour, patchy and aimed at kids mostly; just enough to make you smile.
The story overall was okay, with nothing too extra-ordinary, considering the amount of science-fiction I read.
I went in expecting a lot more than I got and the end result was a waste of two hours that I wished I had put in somewhere else. :(
trailer showed some great imagery / cinematography. I think i'd enjoy this film even if it was rubbish :D
Yes, it look very very good.
That is the big advantage of CGI, movie makers can really let their imagination run wild and come up with the most beautiful masterpieces.
