Limbo 2021

I think the setup was very good: there are a bunch of refugees being housed on a remote island in Scotland while waiting to be accepted to England. Their story is told through very dark humor and both the actors and the script are very good. The story seemed to have lost a bit of steam as it went along but given the backdrop (a small cast living in a single location) I think that was going to happen, especially when despair is part of the backdrop. I thought the film succeeded in creating a sympathetic portrayal of the plight of the refugee.

Like a trusted stranger whispering "It's all going to be OK" just when you need it most, Limbo is a soft spoken comfort film you trust without knowing why.

This simple story of a Syrian refugee waiting in a remote, Scottish halfway house for a decision on his request for asylum lives far beyond the borders of this simple frame. Thanks to its understated humor, strong cast and cinematography that often looks like masterpiece paintings, the film is able to rise above an individual's concerns to attain the universal.

Limbo reminds us that somewhere, in some universe, we are all refugees waiting for acceptance in a ridiculous world.

[Göteborg FF] Almost turned into an Aki kaurismaki, the Scottish director manages to create a fun, moving and profound story about the refugee drama. That sarcastic look that places a group of refugees on some remote Scottish islands where nothing happens except the ups and downs of the weather, creates a story that is humorous but slowly turns to melancholy. The same one that the protagonist has, anchored in a physical limbo, but above all emotional.
