This little tale of survival was enjoyable and surprisingly funny. Was chuffed to have the dog on board, he was a great actor all round. The ending feels rushed but it’s still a great adventure looking for ‘Aimee with an I and two E’s.’
I'm just here, still wondering why the chandelier...
I was really surprised by this movie. Nothing was entirely original. It was like ZombieLand meets Fall-Out. However the movie was ambitious, fun, sweet and exciting at times.
It was nice to see a dog used properly in a movie as well. I mean in most movies with monsters, the dog is predictably a goner. So that definitely was a nice change that he was utilized.
It’s strange to get a monster movie that I actually want to give a big hug.
Clyde and Minnow feels like two characters copied straight from Zoombieland, to bad they didn't make better use of them.
This was an 8 up until the fight scenes begun when it quickly degraded it self to a weak 6.
Feels like the writers came up blank on how to end it all or ran out of time and just scribbled something down that would kind of close it.
A great idea but it fails completely in the last 1/3.
Good wholesome fun movie. There’s a fantastic dog that makes it all worth it.
A big movie in post apocalyptic world to give the same old message "These hoes ain't loyal"
I was skeptical about this movie after seeing the title and reading the plot, but I’m glad that I gave it a chance. I loved it! It’s easy to watch, there were a lot of cute moments, and I was really invested in the characters.
Reminiscent of "Zombieland" only without zombies, but with great monsters, a good end-of-time setting and an excellent dose of self-irony.
Great movie, so fun so entertaining, so out of logic moments , great naration , great black humor the whole thing with the second safehouse was awesome. I don't get how we do not have a sequel for that yet!
A must watch little unknown gem.
A thoroughly entertaining film, with a well-developed premise, a satisfying plot, beautiful visuals, exhilerating action sequences and great performances.
A light copyright from "Zombieland". There are "rules", there is an old guy that teaches life and a dangerous world to traverse.
I would have to agree with @Jim222001 that, while there wasn't anything particularly original in this movie that you hadn't seen before, they were successful in making the mashup very palatable and easy to digest with no bitter aftertaste. Michael Rooker's "Clyde", gets to play a good guy, and is expertly paired with "cute as a button, but I will gut you like a fish" survivorkin', "Minnow", portrayed by Arriana Greenblatt'.
Dylan O'Brian and Jessica Henwick are adequate as the star-crossed leads, although for me, the chemistry between them felt a bit off or forced, especially at their second meeting. However, the character Joel Dawson's growth as far as maturity and leadership was believable enough to perhaps earn a sequel if the set up at the end is any indication.
Loved it, make a sequel
This was a unexpected treat. On a whim I decided to watch this, never expecting very much from it. What a lovely surprise - the hapless hero, a faithful canine, an adventure in the name of love, beautiful Queensland, topped off with Oscar nominated visual effects. Just a great lark with heart. I give this film a 9 (superb fun) out of 10. [Action, Adventure, Comedy, Dystopia]
It is better than I expected. I hope there's a sequel.
I wanted to like this movie, but eh. It had some okay moments, but I found the action scenes to be pretty bad. The final act was just disappointment and also poorly executed.
The idea that these monsters wiped out 95% of humans, including the military is honestly a joke after you watch this apparently 'useless' dude kill loads of them with a crossbow and other not too advanced weaponry. You expect me to believe that this timid, untrained guy with a crossbow has more success fighting monsters than the military of any country on earth who were armed with guns, tanks, and fighter jets. Makes zero sense.
That was fresh !! Boy is so smart, cute and act very well ^^ !!
this movie was so nice to watch! wholesome cozy movie i loved it ^__^
Enjoyable and a fun a ride , for a feel good movie
Super fun watch.. woulda made a great tv series
Well that movie was a lot of fun, plenty of decent action and fuck loads of monsters that can be harmless or very dangerous. I was impressed on Dylan’s performance, definitely growing stronger in his acting and did his role well also the film had a lot of heartwarming moments and a good message.
It was a fun movie, with some great monsters, and a cast to fall in love with. It could have been longer - the more time spent in this world the better - but despite this slight quibble, you're sure to have a good time with this. After all, any film that has a giant crab in it has to be worth a watch, right?
Since Teen Wolf, I expected Dylan O'Brien to become a big star. He gives us a very expressive and charismatic performance. His comedic timing is very impressive and elevates the film. The movie borrows several elements from Zombieland, but thanks to O'Brien, the heart of the film, it turned up being better than I expected. I highly recommended it.
Surprisingly better than expected. Not a bad monster movie.
Pretty good but a little corny. Worth a watch. The dog steals the show and good job by Rooker (Mearle).
Perhaps the fact that not much is expected from this film makes it a compelling film in the end, small but with good special effects and the right rhythm. This is a coming-of-age with giant insects around it, which works well thanks to its protagonist and a remarkable sense of humor and action. It has many similarities to "Zombieland", but knows how to reinvent it to create an enjoyable commercial product.
What a wholesome movie.. Loved it.. Did away with clichés(won't spoil)... showed character growth.. It was exactly what I was looking for today
cool monsters, with an okay story. I enjoyed it, but wouldn't watch it again
I was coerced to leaving this review because, I was caught stealing food.
A fun movie, good acting, new spin on end of the world story line. I enjoyed it and give it a 7 out of 10.
A movie that had potential to be good, the movie is soo rushed, and at top if that is soo predictable..truly an average at best. Hopefully the second one will be better.
I am so glad that Dylan O'Brien recovered so well from his near-fatal accident on the Death Cure set. He has the potential to become a real super-star.
This movie is just a lot of fun albeit a little goofy. The terror here are primarily giant mutated bugs (most evil or just trying to survive and some that are actually kind). But of course "man" is still the baddy at the top of the chain.
Bottomline, Dylan is a lot of fun to watch. Defintely worth a watch.
1-3  = seriously! don't waste your time
4-6  = you may or may not enjoy this
7-8  = I expect you will like this too
9-10  = movies and TV shows I really love!
The love plot is cute, the characters are well written, the design of the monster are pretty original but the plot is exactly like Daybreak, hahaha. But even if the film is very simple have really great moments. Is hard to believe that Love and Monsters is not based in a book or a comic.
I recommend this one, is a blast to watch.
this wouldn’t have been half as good without dylan obrien and ariana greenblatt
This was hands down one of the best movies I have seen in a while.
It's cute. It's entertaining.
Is it really good ? I wouldn't go that far. Is it original ? Not really, but it's a good copy of some good stuff.
The animated intro is fun. It's an interesting version of the apocalypse (though global mutation of insects through rockets residue is extremely stupid).
Some nice ideas in world building, but after that the plot is extremely conventional.
Of course he will meet someone who will teach him, and of course he will survive and make it to the girl, of course the girl didn't wait for him for years, and just as soon as you see him, of course the nice captain is a bad guy.
But anyway, it works if you take it as a children's adventure movie.
Very incoherent: the twist shows the big monster is one of the "nice ones" but it's presented as needing humans as a fuel source. It's not that they use it to get rid of people, it's that it needs to eat people, and the crew are bad guys because they let it to be able to move the ship. So clearly, the twist is just so that he uses how to recognize it, but it makes no sense.
But it could leave a better impression without the ending.
The ending is total absurdity. It's so ragingly stupid.
If I could survive, anyone can ? Really ? If you're lucky enough to survive 3-4 times, you'll make it. Yeah, ok. How many people are killed to keep only the lucky survivors ?
Let's be real, he survived:
Several times because he was saved by a dog.
Several times saved by very experimented survivors.
Once with a lot of luck and a grenade
Once rescued by a colony who had medical equipment
How well would that play for the majority of people ?
Plus walking around alone with almost nothing is very different than in big groups while carrying everything you need - as a group - to survive. Maybe one can luckily escape a monster, but if it attacks a group of 10+ people ?
What about the elderly and babies/children ? Aimee's colony is basically just her and old people that need medical attention. How much can they walk ? And carry ? How can they run when they come across a monster? How do they fight ?
And you're giving up EVERYTHING for that. Beds. The ability to grow food. Electricity that means communication.
The world building could leave an open ending and other adventures in this world. But honestly the only realistic following is "95% of humanity survivors wiped because they followed some stupid guy's advice". This is absurdly insane.
3 Thoughts After Watching ‘Love and Monsters’:
There were some icky moments. Some of those creatures made me squirm a bit. I thought the effects were pretty solid.
The Mav1s moment and the friendly crab scene were particularly sweet. Gotta give this movie credit for having a little heart.
It was a cute film. And a story told well. But there’s something missing, something I can’t put my finger on, that keeps it from being something truly memorable.
This was such a fun movie. Kind of like a comedy zombie, but slightly different spin. Either way the characters were charming, fun story, adventures, and no wokeness.
I really enjoyed watching this movie, For me I give it a rating 7/10 :star:
Easy, cute, and quirky love story makes this movie and easy and enjoyable watch.
Most remarkable is the different from usual approach to the apocalypse that makes the familiar into an alien world with well thought out creatures and believable characters.
A refreshing feel-good survival movie. Refrains from using all of the typical tropes, too.
Okay movie but so many cheesy callbacks.
The beginning is not very hopeful and the film is quite simple and predictable. Even so, he lets himself be seen.
I feel like the screenwrites were incredibly lazy with this movie. The plot is so stupid at times it's almost insulting. For example, The whole yacht captain thingy was just beyond too much, what was the point of that? That made the movie look like utter joke. Taming a giant crab, really? How can he electrocute a giant grab with a handheld device? There was a scene that I absolutely couldn't take, where Aimee was fighting the lady with the hand cannon. The captain told her to shoot the dog (who was not a threat at all) so that Aimee could tip the hand cannon, hitting the crab. I was like, was that why he told her to shoot the dog? So they could shoot the crab instead.
Fun fantasy monster movie brings such entertainment that you just don't expect. It was a good time with excellent visuals, comedic and adventurous moments aplenty.
Enjoyed the movie. Good plot....7.5/10.
this is like if godzilla and zootopia had a baby and i have never loved a baby more tbh. also dylan o brien has a monopoly on the hot helpless nerd trope sorry to every other lanky man who still passes for a college freshman you need a different shtick
The script is very lazy, but the film is fun and the ending is better than expected.
Great , fun, surprisingly good movie
this was actually really fun to watch, even thrilling, got me get up of my bad n scream in some scenes, yes nothing special about it even has some plot holes but overall it's really enjoyable.
i loved the character development, how Dylan was finally able to overcome his fear by regret was really really touching n nice scene.
so give it a shot without the overthinking just watch to pass time n u will be satisfied much
This was actually better than I expected. It's fun to watch and it had some lovely, genuine moments; perfect for a Sunday night. I loved it. I wish it was a TV show so this post-apocalyptic world could be explored further.
Basically Daybreak's movie... with monster!
An entertaining coming of age movie with very good visuals. In the end it wasn't about finding Aimee but finding himself. Aimee had changed over the years into a girl he didn't actually know, and he held onto her memory, believing that she's still the person who will understand him and make him happy. While that wasn't the case, thanks to the journey he got out of his "comfort zone" and grew as a person, which is what he encouraged everyone else to do at the end. I don't think that kiss scene was necessary though.
I also really like the main character and the world-setting in general. This feels like it has the potential to be made into a series as a sequal or maybe just another story set in the same universe. Although I doubt it would be done well. They'd probably screw it up so it might be better to just leave it as it is.
Oh and I felt really bad for Mav1s, I wish she could be saved :(
Very fun exciting story with dog being best character. Many elements feel familiar and story pretty predictable but still enjoyable watch 6.5/10 :)
What a sweet little film! I enjoyed the entirety of it. Hoping there’d be a reunion with Minnow and co.
Boy is one awesome pup!
And I’m so happy about how everything just came together, every little help he got on the way, especially the eye-thing.
What a wonderful hero’s journey!
The vibe I got from watching this is that it’s a cute young adult movie that has an inspiring message behind it.
The visuals were stunning, and because of that, I had a good time watching it. The story was simple enough and a bit predictable at times.
The cute doggo kept me invested in the movie the entire time.
I’d recommend this movie for the beautiful graphics.
THE UGLY: ‘LOVE AND MONSTERS’
WRITING: 50
ACTING: 60
LOOK: 70
SOUND: 60
FEEL: 60
NOVELTY: 25
ENJOYMENT: 65
RE-WATCHABILITY: 40
INTRIGUE: 65
EXPECTATIONS: 45
THE GOOD:
Michael Rooker offers a delicious but sadly minor part, playing a lovely rough, Indiana Jones-type of a ranger. He forms a lovely duo with Ariana Greenblatt’s nosy kid Minnow.
Joel’s development and personal maturing process throughout the film is a huge part of the film and one of the better aspects of the script.
This film flows nice and has a simple enough premise to work as a sufficient time-killer if you don’t have anything better to do.
The production design is great, the soundtrack is great and the sense of adventure is great, making sure that audiences will remain invested throughout the film and root for Joel to find his loved one.
THE BAD:
Dylan O’Brien isn’t the most natural of leads, and I’m not particularly fond of his VO work, but he barely passes in terms of his overall performance. The biggest problem is the fact that O’Brien is forced to work alongside a dog and a bunch of visual effects, which effectively means that he has no co-actors to lean on during many of his scenes. He is simply not talented enough to carry his scenes alone.
O’Brien lacks any chemistry with Jessica Henwick, making their relationship, Joel’s supposed driving force, seem very artificial.
I don’t know whether it’s intended or not, but the monster effects and movements aren’t always very fluid, and you can oftentimes tell that you are looking at a visual effect. It’s like watching a 70s fantasy movie with stop-motion effects.
You’d expect a film promising love and monsters in its title to feature both of those, but this one is comparatively light on both accounts. While there are monster encounters, they are pretty pointless and not very memorable. When it comes to love, it’s even less noticeable, even if it’s the main reason for Joel’s journey.
Joel and Aimee aren’t very interesting characters, because there isn’t much of a backstory given for either of them. The overall plot is light and straightforward both in terms of dramatic beats and world exploration, meaning that the post-apocalyptic setting feels like wasted potential.
One of my biggest problems with this film is the middle-of-the-road feel to it. The monster encounters don’t feel like big events or important highlight, because they appear sporadically and are over almost immediately. The stuff between is so generic that it makes the world feel flat and not as alive as I’d hoped. Most of the journey doesn’t feel like a real struggle, and therefore there’s a distinct lack of dramatic tension in the plot.
The villains appear out of thin air, are never explored deeply and remain therefore clichéd and forgettable.
THE UGLY:
We really need a sequel now, in which Boy meets Girl.
THE VERDICT:
Love and Monsters is less about the love and the monsters, and more about a generic adventure and maturing process of a young man, but it’s sufficient enough to satisfy eventless evenings.
54% = :heavy_minus_sign: = UGLY
Didn’t expect one of my favourite films I’d watch while binging all the Oscar nominations to be one nominated for best vfx. Good movie.
Love and Monsters is like your favorite candy. Not really new and much what you expect, but it's still pretty sweet.
The film brandishes the same brand as John Dies at the End with its hyper, half charming - 3/4s annoying narrator. And while the story is a bit too tame and absolutely predictable, the startling cinematography and next-level special effects make this a trip worth taking.
worth a watch. sometimes corny. and the radio always seems to cut out at inopportune moments. my biggest issue is how it ends with joel saying, if he can survive, anyone can. then how the hell did 95% of the global population (with military weapons) die from these things? still, it's enjoyable enough to overlook its issues
It is a very good movie :heart_eyes: I loved it
I‘ve been awaiting something crappy. „Unfortunately“ it was quite good.
Expected it to suck but it didn't. in fact, it's a really fun watch.
What an enjoyable movie. The monster design was really great.
I liked it a lot, because it talks about a very cool subject, it has a little humor and that's great !!
this movie is a delicious screen moment : very good acting from al the crew :)
, a lot's of fun :) and a lovely message you have to see till the end :)
I hope you will enjoy like me watching this masterpiece :)
Great time-waster with a bit of comedy thrown in (no LOL though). Good special effects and I was glad they quickly went through the background on how they got to where they are today instead of a long-drawn-out flashback.
I didn't have huge expectations for this movie - watched it on a flyer, but it was much better than expected. 8/10
Cute but nothing special , a one time entertainment thing
It's a good movie but 1 time watchable

When i saw the trailer and the collaboration of Paramount with Netflix i had a small anxiety. But then it all led to a small disappointment.
The biggest problem of the movie in my opinion is its plot holes in what has to do to with world building it tries to create. The truth is you don't expect something deep or dark, which would be more logical in a post-apocalyptic world. Ok it is a fun movie mostly, but still you don't want to have too many unrealistic elements. Since it gives so much exposition at the beginning, you would expect to cover some basic things around the escalation of some events, the time progress and the general situation. After a big war we take this? No way.
I also didn't like the rushing bonding of the characters. The only bonding that worked a little was the protagonist's with Minnow, but that was more due to the talent of Ariana. And in some cases the acting of secondary characters, was uplifted or like i came for the money check and i am going.
The monster design was decent, but still kinda flat. Since you try to build a world and a history around it, you should be more sophisticated. The survival book was a good way to help improve the philosophy behind the monsters, but didn't use it. Sending random names for them is not funny and it doesn't really help.
The atmosphere was fine, but had the usual problem with many Netflix productions. Even though they try to show you that something happens in an open world, it feels like the whole movie was shot in a garden or in a room. You don't feel the progress and the change of places and atmosphere. The time of the protagonist's journey was enough to make friends and become a super hero, but not enough to show you different places and sceneries. Also if you over use sounds to show the danger, after some time it becomes hilarious and more of a low budget movie trick.
About the action, i will pass the children's armory and the nerf alike weaponry. In general was ok. There was some tense, some tactical ideas, but very predictable outcomes.
In general it was more like a Disney movie. Only the songs were missing, although we almost reached to see something like that, too. It was obvious from very early the intention to leave space for more sequels, something that also gave poor results.
I don't want to be strict but when you want to have quality productions and create new ideas, you should give emphasis to the details. In the elder years such movies would create big merchandise and leave a cult sense. Now it seems more like a rush movie just to fill our platform library. I am not saying don't see it, but if you have other movies in your watchlist maybe try them first.
