Manhattan 1979

A neurotic, self-absorbed shmuck goes around, complaining about a bunch of stuff, and inexplicably charming women until they get sick of him. No sort of resolution.

After seeing this movie, I believe that I can now clearly see the difference between a "film" and a "movie". Woody Allen's usual ingredients are all displayed here: comic genius, anxiety, insecurity, etc. It has been a while since I saw "Annie Hall" but I do believe that this movie...errr... film to be superior to that one.

In hindsight this film is a little troubling to Allen personally as it is yet another example of him dating someone that is barely (or not even) a woman yet.

A movie that’ll probably get on a lot of people’s nerves, but I enjoyed it a lot. It balances complex drama with easygoing romcom elements like Annie Hall, however this film’s tone leans more towards the former. Loved the vintage score/cinematography, it certainly eased me into the more challenging aspects, such as the characters. Overall, didn’t quite love it in the same way I did with Annie Hall, but that’s a really high bar for me.

8/10
