Some might view this as British humour but it most certainly is not. It's an American view (from an extreme distance) of what they perceive the English essence of wit might be. It warps whimsy, balls up bravado and not even Paul Bettany can push past it.
Due to the unfavourable reviews, I postponed watching this movie for quite a while. Five years later — because its exquisite cast had always pulled me in — I find myself finally wanting to see it. This movie showed me that there must be something wrong with me, as I found it to be terribly amusing, unlike the majority's consensus. I spent so much more time genuinely laughing than nodding my head in disapproval. Although, I should make this clear, I find the movie funny, but not hilarious. Maybe it's some sort of an "acquired taste" thing? Hence why probably must people failed to appreciate the peculiar humour of Mortdecai.
Excellent and very entertaining performances by Johnny Depp (a delightful take on the upper class British stereotype) and Paul Bettany (a respectful fiercely loyal manservant, very much full of sperm), as expected.
I confess this movie left me craving for more, but since it was a box-office flop and five years have passed without any news of a sequel, I'm afraid I'll just have to rewatch this one again in a couple of years... And, with unfathomable delight, I shall!
Bit silly, but not bad.
Give this movie a chance! If you are into humor that is "right in your face" and is more thought-provoking, then this is for you. The humor is witty and keeps you going throughout the entire thing. The storyline isn't bad either.
This wasn't actually terrible although I can understand why it was reviewed that way. It's weird and quirky, but not in a way that would go over well in America, and yet, misses the mark for a British audience too by playing it too straight, which doesn't really make sense. A bit like this film...
Great movie. A silly funny good time. Don't believe the reviews.
This movie is quirky AF. I loved it. Johnny Depp is great in this one.
Oh Depp why do you keep doing this? You had it all man. The money, the love from the fans, and your spot light. Now look at you. Flop after flop at the box office, very low rating on Rotten Tomatoes and me slowly losing faith in you, and this movie is the extra nail to the coffin of Depp's career because this is by far the worst movie of 2015.
Johnny Depp in this movie was pretty much playing Captain Jack sparrow..again. Probably his next movie I bet I'm going to say the same thing that his just doing Jack Sparrow again. Sorry Johnny but you really need to get out of that role of a drunk pirate.
David Koepp is the directed of this movie, but he's better known for his screenwriting for such films has: Jurassic Park, Spider-man, Panic Room and Mission Impossible. Now he directs Mortdecai and it's painful to say that the directing in this was pretty piss poor terrible and it's like he wasn't even trying in this.
I hear a lot of critics and people even on YouTube saying that the movie has some little chuckles in it, but that didn't happen here with me. I was bored out of my mind of this dreadfully bland hollow of a movie. From start till finish, I felt embarrassed watching this movie.
I'm sorry but I couldn't find a thing I liked in this movie, not even Gwyneth Paltrow or Ewan McGregor could save this movie from being even close to being alright.
Mortdecai should be best descried has a embarrassment of movies. This movie is worthy of a Razzie Award, and to the people who disagree with me or think this movie isn't all that bad, well I'm putting it out, I wish I was you right now.
Thos whole film can be summarised as peculiar. If it is attempting to replicate slapstick British humour for the American audience then somehow it misses it's mark. A star studded cast can't redeem this bizarre escapade and even stranger characters. It is at times entertainin, but not in a so-bad-its-good way.
bad bad, i dont like the fool humor with no sense.
Quite possibly the worst movie I have seen in my entire life.
It's a bad good movie gone bad!
You have to be take in the silliness of the plot and the situations they got into. Hilarious!
i knew it's going to be kinda bad but i only watched it for Johnny Depp
I love Johnny Depp but I was disappointed in this movie. :(
