My Cousin Vinny 1992

the movie is 30 years old now and I'm just seeing it for the first time. And honestly it was fantastic. Movies in the 80s and 90s were just DIFFERENT. It's a really fresh watch compared to most of the media junk today. The movie is written in a simple setting very down to earth, but that's the best part. It's entertaining, it's intuitive, and it's great to watch underdogs overturn the stage.

You'd be hard pressed to find a comedy that runs its simple premise so well, or is so thoroughly entertaining in the process. The cast is superb, specifically the dynamic between Fred Gwynne, Joe Pesci, and Marissa Tomei is something that never ceases to bring a smile to my face whenever I think about it. Just the lines concerning "grits" could be used to teach a class on comedic writing.

A courtroom comedy that succeeds primarily because of the fantastic central performances of Joe Pesci and Marisa Tomei. It's not a pairing that I would have expected, but that only adds to the charm of their fish-out-of-water schtick. The story is well paced, with just enough of substance to supplement the comedy. Speaking of the comedy, it is plentiful and diverse, including a well balanced combination of clever dialogue, running jokes, and physical gags.

As an aside, I went into this film with some very incorrect assumptions. I guess I can't see Joe Pesci without thinking Goodfellas, because I thought his character was going to be a mob lawyer, and that the film would be more serious, or at least that the comedy would be darker. Luckily, this didn't detract from the experience. In fact, as always, going in without knowing the true premise made things more enjoyable.

More films should have two yout and a can of tuna as a catalyst as It worked wonders for the glorious classic comedy of misunderstandings.

Like the big-assed flasher, there was a lot of dull exposition but it was worth it in the end.

Seemed like they spent the whole first two acts setting up the third, but at least the third act was worth it.

Oscar winner Marisa Tomei for the well-deserved win, baby!

I recently revisited this title to see if it holds up. It does! Fun with lots of great humor and excellent characters. The star making turn by Marisa Tomei continues to light up the screen all this time later and Macchio is hanging in there by a crane kick. However, this is Pesci's movie and he proves he can sparkle in his eyes as well as torture someone in a Vegas casino. Let's not forget this is the movie when Fred Gwynne finally was able to shake off his Herman Munster typecasting and led to a bit of a resurgence in his career in his late years.
