My Lovely Sister / Ahoti Hayafah

One of the most whimsical films to emerge from Israel in several years. Set in an impoverished housing block in one of Israel’s peripheral towns, My Lovely Sister is based on a Moroccan-Jewish folk tale and chronicles the love triangle between Rahma, her crude husband and the ghost of her beautiful sister who died from the pain of banishment for having married an Arab man. Evelin Hagoel won an Israeli Oscar for her performance as Rahma, a wife and mother whose primitive superstition hides an inner struggle. Seamlessly blending comedy, melodrama and magic realism, director Marco Carmel (Father’s Footsteps, TJFF 09) offers an earthy tale of buried resentments, sexual passions and hidden capacities for love and compassion.
