Night of the Lepus 1972

I wanted to like this and was hoping for a campy 'so-bad-it's-good' movie but it's just kind of ...boring? Janet Leigh and DeForest Kelley are wasted here (not literally, although that would probably make the film more entertaining). None of the characters are memorable or interesting, so it's easy to lose interest once the novelty of "giant rabbits" wears off.

The major problem is that rabbits are not scary, giant or otherwise, so this film needed to somehow overcome that problem but it failed. Furthermore, even running at less than 90 minutes, Night of the Lepus felt a bit too long and poorly paced, with seemingly numerous slow motion scenes of "stampeding giant rabbits". In addition to this, the script and cast is lacking any humour and doesn't find the fun ridiculousness of a town being overrun by KILLER GIANT RABBITS!! A pity.

There's so much to scoff at here…where to start? I usually like B-grade Sci-Fi but this story about a plague of rabbits that turns into a plague of GIANT rabbits terrorizing a small Southwestern town is too bad to even see the humor in. Stuart Whitman is stiff as a board playing Roy Bennett the lead scientist who accidentally brings about the big bunnies. Look to Star Trek's DeForest Kelley to go through the motions as well. The giant rabbits always look like regular-sized rabbits running in a miniaturized set. In slow motion no less.

I didn't like it. It's just too adorable for me. Gang of cute giant rabbits hopping around killing whatever come in their way. I appreciate the effort making rabbits look scary but they just don't. I was hoping to get a good laugh watching this kind of film or at least fit in my so bad it's good films but no, it's not entertaining, below average, it's not campy enough, the actors show no emotion whatsoever. It's dumb.

This is a b movie with a great premise.... it’s not scary but it’s awesome. All I can say is that my dogs would have had no chance against these killer bunnies!

As a denizen of the desert southwest, I am somewhat concerned that the absurd premise of this movie will detract from the very real threat of jackalopes in the region.
