One Magic Christmas 1985

A strange Christmas movie with fine performances by Mary Steenburgen and Harry Dean Stanton. An angel played by Stanton tries to make Steenburgen believe in Christmas.
With Santa Claus and time travel thrown into the story as well. It may not make much sense but it’s heart warming in the end nevertheless.

Absolutely bizarre.

What is the meaning of this film? Don't get me wrong, there is a positive one in there - somewhere, I think - but the core one is dodgy. I won't go into detail as I don't want to spoil anything, though in short the film is about a mother who has lost all belief in Christmas. A standard festive premise, yet this does it with a major twist. It doesn't land with me at all, it's basically a form of blackmail by the end which is wild!

Mary Steenburgen portrays mother Ginny fairly well, given the plot troubles. Ginny is incredibly, pretty much, the villain of the production, for no real reason other than disliking the current period for logical reasons. Elsewhere on the cast, you have notable roles for Harry Dean Stanton (Gideon) and Elisabeth Harnois (Abbie). Stanton, himself, is alright.

The film actually builds up nicely, before the already mentioned capitulation with the story occurs. 'One Magic Christmas' is extremely odd!

From Disney comes the rather unusual holiday film, One Magic Christmas. The story follows an angel who’s assigned to help a working mother find the Christmas spirit, and to do so he enlists the help of her daughter. Mary Steenburgen and Harry Dean Stanton lead a somewhat eclectic cast. And the plot too has its share of quirks, with the angel teaming up with Santa Claus, and the use of a Christmas Wish to bring back the dead. The tone shifts so wildly that it’s hard to tell what kind of film you're in half the time; fantasy, comedy, tragedy. Still, One Magic Christmas manages to come through with some heartwarming moments.

This movie may be old school, but it isn't a classic. For more, see the review:
