Osaka Elegy 1936

Never 100% sure it Mizoguchi is a feminist is misogynist. I suspect it’s the former but would rather think of him as the latter as I don’t need my fave directors to be simpin’.

Anyway, not Mizoguchi’s best but a solid entry.

All his usual themes are present and you can see the blocking and tracking shots that he became known for developing.

Not a masterpiece but well worth 70mins of ur time.

Perhaps it's wrong to let the end of a movie influence your opinion of the movie so, but the masterfully shot last five minutes of this film took it from entertaining romantic melodrama to an inspiring feminist anti-suicide-note, and an utterly unique one at that! If you enjoy films of the 1930s and have tired of the mainstream foreign fare, this may be one to try.
