It's a product of its times, it screams 80s from the very beginning.
The story follows Lincoln Hawk, a truck driver who wants to reconnect with his 12 years old son after abandoning him and his mother before he was born. But when mommy is on the verge of death because of some unclear heart disesase, the evil and filthy rich grandfather pretends full custody of the nephew... after raising him since he was a newborn! Can you believe the audacity??
Also, Lincoln is such a great father figure! He teaches his 12 years old son to drive a truck in a freeway (so later the son manages to steal a car and drive to the airport to see his daddy's arm wrestling tournament in another city, what a nice and not dangerous thing to do!); he goes to a teen bully to challenge him in arm wrestling match with his son, in fact FORCING his son into the match, and said son clearly told him he didn't want to do it and was scared shit of losing an arm or something; but come on, who wouldn't want their dad going to the to the big strong bully to tell him "HEY, MY SON CAN BEAT THE SHIT OUT OF YOU!! HERE'S 5 BUCKS, FIGHT HIM!!"; I mean, it's fundemental to learn a life lesson!
Big Daddy here basically loses full custody when he crashes into the grandfather's villa, destroying the gate and threatening to kidnap his son... oh, but the grandfather is the villain of the story, 'cause he only cares about money!!
Oh, but don't worry, because granpa changes his mind when he sees Lincoln fighting in the final arm wrestling competition. Since he has proven he is the toughest man around, he can have the kid!
Such a happy ending!
The name Over the Top is perfect for this movie since it is over the top sentimental. However it’s still a sweet father and son bonding movie.
Tbh, this movie was really over the top.
Sylvester Stallone leads the cast in Over the Top, a campy and heartwarming family film. The story follows long haul truck driver Lincoln Hawk as he takes his estranged son Mike on a road trip, but he’ll have to fight to keep him when Mike’s grandfather attempts to get custody. The plot’s not that bad, except for when it tries to be a sports film about arm wrestling (which is kind of weird). Still, the arm wrestling championship is so incredibly cheesy that it’s fun. And Stallone has the charisma to sell just about anything, making it rather easy to go on this ride with him. Additionally, the film has a great soundtrack that features some classic ‘80s hits such as “Meet Me Half Way” and “Winner Takes It All.” It’s has some problems, but overall Over the Top is an entertaining and heartfelt film about family.
A man wins over his son with a pulse
This movie is something. I oddly enjoyed it, but the plot is a giant mess and I was never sure where it is going next. You see the premise. You know how it will end. The journey of how you get there almost feels like it is out of a Harold & Kumar movie. Is that bad? Probably. However, there is still some merit here.

We need more arm wrestling movies like this.
Is it possible this film is getting worse as time goes by?
Stallone bonding with his son is charming. The arm wrestling scenes are nothing too special though. Just Stallone arm wrestling loud mouth muscle heads.
Then teaching his son to arm wrestle loud mouth punk kids. Cute movie otherwise.
Winner takes it alllllll, fight from the beginningggg. Logic out the window for this one.
