If I was 12 and it was 1986 I'd have given it a 9/10 and watched it again already
The film had a lot of potential, but sadly the script is all over the place, with misguided attempts at trying to evoke 80's movie nostalgia. A real disappointment; a shame, because I was looking forward to this one.
This is a movie for children and not a good one at that. If you're an adult, you'll be bored out of your mind from the idiocy that goes on. Just because you're making a children's film doesn't mean you should phone in the script.
This is the modern day 'Breakfast Club' meets 'The Goonies'. A cute coming of age movie with lots of action and laughs.
Cute movie to pass the time.
It's really bad, on one hand it tries to do ridiculous satirical comedy, but it also tries to be very serious.
Add to that so blatant racism, not for the sake of story but for "comedy" effect.
I'm guessing the writers are not fans of white and asian people.
Oh and lest i forget, the sexualisation of little kids in this movie is disturbing.
Poor writing, filled with clichés and a little bad acting, but that is expected from a kids movie in contrary to the insinuations in the beginning. The beginning is filled with sexual innuendos. This isn't the same as "kids think like that too" type situation, they are being sexualised, it's weird.
I can't judge this film because it's meant for kids, but I can solemnly swear I will never come within smelling distance of this reeking pile of predictability and bad jump scares ever again in my life.
A note to McG if he happens to read this comment - You should really try something other than the director's chair. The only good thing about this movie are the kids. But you can't just throw in cycles and kids and aliens and think you have another E.T. on your hands. The storyline is non-existent. It appears there is only one alien(and it's dog apparently) in the whole wide world who are doing overtime hunting the kids for no apparent reason. The alien kills everyone in its path but is just not able to kill the kids I don't know why. That would have ended the movie earlier and saved me some time.
Also, there seems to be just one scientist in NASA who can save the world, but it turns out that the procedure is so simple that the kids end up saving the day(fire up some generators, re-align a dish, and enter authorization codes to launch a missile).
There is a sequence where the kids enter a kitchen a-la the kitchen sequence in the Jurassic Park, but no, McG just does not have the vision, the budget, or the imagination to make anything interesting enough to watch. Don't watch unless you have time to waste.
If I was 12 I would have eaten this up. Still good though
Parental Advise: is actually PG-13, and NOT just PG!
I watched it with my kids. It was cheesy but not too bad.
I accidentally started the movie but I don't really regret it, I would have so loved this movie if I would be a pre-teen. The director is McG, the same guy who directed the disastrous Terminator Salvation and he clearly do a better job in this movie.
The movie is filled of pop-culture reference and the Jurassic Park franchise. But at about 1h, the movie suddenly turn into an Adidas ad because of the you-can't-miss-it product placement.
I applaud the creators of this movie what they were trying to do: to recreate the glorious movies of the 80s where kids went on an adventure and survived with only their friendship and wit. I grew up with these movies and would wish my kids could see them with the eyes I had back then: the wonder, the excitement, the pre-teen love interests and the "GODDAMN YEAH GET THOSE MOFO'S".
With this movie I think they can. It's like the movies I saw but for this era, including the extremely cool room noone ever had. There's a little bit too much comedy in there but it gets the vibe. The inconsistencies in script and editing I can ignore. I might need to wait a few more years to show this (then again... maybe not) but this is something I want my kids to see. This and Indiana Jones, Ghostbusters, Predator and plenty of others...
I rate this 5 not too bad.
Fun but highly overrated. Lacked a solid plot, had fun lovable characters with potential but not enough backstory. Poor visuals.
Some good jokes though. Dariush was fantastic.
It was pretty good. Was slow starting off but picked up as time went on.
Good family entertainment. Well worth a watch.

What a unexpectedly good movie! Stop trying to understand it, and just have fun!
It has the best script at the beginning. Get a bit boring half through. Still worth watching, though
Amazing!! Well done Netflix once again!!
The movie is somewhere between a parody and something that wants to be taken seriously (if only as a light comedy).
That's the point where they lost me. It is not funny or clever enough and too much relying on stereotypes that I would expect in a 90ies movie to be a good parody but if I try to take it seriously it is just hilariously bad.
It's good for a few laughs between many cringe worthy moments.
Aka Four Shallow Tropes and a MacGuffin.
Not perfect but a fun summer kid adventure movie.

It feels like this was written as a series and then got chopped down into a movie.
