Scream 4 was like a phoenix rising from the awfulness that was the third film (or is turd film more apropos). Perhaps overpraise but it DID right the capsized franchise

3 Thoughts After Re-Watching ‘Scream 4’:
It’s a Scream movie, so I love it. But there’s definitely a disconnect here from the trilogy… as I finish my marathon of all four films. And I think it’s because our legacy cast gets vastly underused here. And when they are used, they’re not given a lot to work with. And, Kirby aside, the new cast of kids are just plain forgettable.
The highlights here are the beginning and end. The jab at endless horror sequels is amazing, and it’s a fun and appropriate way to return to the franchise. The ending was not traditional for a Scream movie, but it was refreshing. And it put the spotlight back on our fave trio.
All in all, Scream 4 continues giving this incredible franchise a solid run. Most horror franchises and sequels are not so lucky. I hope and pray that the upcoming fifth outing doesn’t fail us either.
Bonus Thought: “Don’t fuck with the original.” Amen, Sid.
I’m surprised they did back to back movies where the killer was her family. I imagine a lot of people guessed she was the killer as soon as it was revealed she was Sidney’s cousin. But this was okay, there was nothing for me that really separated this movie from the rest.
This time we’re making fun of reboots, so it’s self-conscious repeats of the past with amped up gore and lots of jokes about how old everyone is (and it was bizarre watching these back to back; in 1-3 only the hair changes, but now they’re suddenly all looking like their own parents).
I think the series peaked with the first movie, but this one was surprisingly fun. As always the postmodern elements are just window dressing; no real attempt is made to engage with social media, copycat crime, generational conflict etc and nowhere near enough is made of the live-streaming element. But the cast is fun even when they’re playing hateful idiots (Alison Brie) or don’t make any sense as written (Emma Roberts).
Real curious to see the new one tonight, everyone is presumably on walkers now.
And then Emma Roberts became a Scream Queen
"You forgot the first rule of remakes, ____. Don't fuck with the original!"
It does feel good to go back to the original home town years later. While not as good as the first 2, it is better than Scream 3. While webcams every where seems a bit tacky, I found myself intrigued. The main thing I hated is that GOD AWFUL glow filter used. Looks like a dream sequence in a soap opera. They need to Release the Craven clean cut.
It blends the line between self parody and serious sequel and I think that blend is fun, although I understand the hate it gets.
There are some pretty bad moments like the one with Anthony Anderson though that make that blend feel more rough around the edges.
Still better than Scream 3 imo.
why the hell dint they just left the trilogy alone...? horrible.
I really like what they are going for here, the concepts and the updates are well done and they work, but Emma Roberts completely deflates the whole thing by the

SO HERE WE ARE, IT MUST BE TUESDAY LOL,
WE FIND OURSELVES AT A QUADGILOGY
OF THIS AWESOME AND VERY VERY ENTERTAINING FRANCHISE.
I HAD A GREAT TIME
WITH THIS ONE, BUT
NUMBER 3 IS STILL THE BETTER
SCREAM MOVIE ALL ROUND.
BUT S4 IS A VAST IMPROVEMENT
OVER S2 WHICH IS DEFINITELY
THE WEAKEST OF THE FRANCHISE.
ALL THE FAMILIAR FACES ARE BACK,
(MISSED THE RULES UPDATE
FROM MY MAN RANDY,
WOULD HAVE BEEN SUPER
AWESOME JUST TO POP HIM UP AT POST CREDITS, missed opportunity,
with all the silliness and
craziness it would have fitted
in perfectly).
I DID LOVE ALL THE BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE
IN THIS ONE THOUGH AND SEEING
MADDISON FROM AHS S3
POP UP WAS FANTASTIC,
HER PERFORMANCE IN
THIS WAS OUTSTANDING
SHE PLAYS SUCH A GREAT EVIL BADDIE.
I THINK SHE IS AN AWESOME ACTRESS,
WHAT A TREAT SEEING
MY GIRL ARIA
FROM "PRETTY LITTLE LIARS"
SHE SHOULD HAVE BEEN IN THE HOLE
MOVIE. AFTER DEALING WITH "A"
SHE WOULD HAVE BEEN PERFECT TO
GO UP AGAINST GHOSTFACE.
EVERYBODY ELSE PLAYED THEIR ROLE
TO "A"
T AND ONCE AGAIN WE
HAD A LOT OF FUN.
SOMETIMES IT DID GET VERY SILLY
BUT NO DEAL BREAKER
ESPECIALLY WHEN THEY SAY SOMETHING SILLY WHILE GETTING GUTTED/FLAYED.
A COUPLE OF TIME'S I HAD TO REMIND MYSELF THIS IS SCREAM NOT SCARY MOVIE
ESPECIALLY WHEN THE BLACK GUY POPS UP FROM SCARY MOVIE, I WOULD HAVE PREFERRED
JAY AND SILENT BOB AGAIN
IF WE ARE GOING THAT DIRECTION.
I THOUGHT THE BEGINNING WAS SUPERB SECOND BEST TO NUMBER 1
AND I LOVED THE TWIST AT THE END,
WOW I NEVER SAW THAT COMING
WELL 1 OF THEM ANYWAY.
I FOUND IF YOU LOOK AT THE CREEPIEST CHARACTERS....THAT'S GHOST FACE
WELL ONE OF THEM AT LEAST.
OVER ALL THIS WAS STILL AN
8.5/10 EVEN WITH THE SILLY PARTS BECAUSE BY NOW WE ALL KNOW THESE MOVIE'S DO NOT TAKE THEMSELVES SERIOUSLY AND THAT'S FINE BECAUSE WE LOVE THEM FOR THAT IT'S WHAT MAKES THEM UNIQUE AND STAND OUT FROM ALL THE MANY MANY OTHERS. PLUS WE STILL GET A GREAT INTERESTING STORY AND
FANTASTIC HORROR.
SCREAM FRANCHISE IS AND
ALWAYS WILL BE MY FAVOURITE
HORROR FRANCHISE,
GHOST FACE WILL DEFINITELY GO DOWN IN THE HISTORY BOOKS, UP THERE
WITH ALL THE ICONIC GREATS
AND FOR THAT
'WES' WOULD HAVE BEEN SO PROUD.
I WILL ALWAYS TAKE
ANOTHER INSTALLMENT
OF THIS PHENOMENAL FRANCHISE
(we do have
a 7th on it's way,
they Can't come quick enough for me).
"WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE SCARY MOVIE"
here we go again, we don't need a reason....just give us Ghost-face and
some victims to get fed into
the meat grinder and off we go....
And always always remember
The rules, especially
Rule Number one:
"Don't Fcuk With The Original"
"Don't mess up with the original" ;)
Like I'm watching some of the first three movies... But anyway, I loved it! :D Not much of a horror, but it's good for killing time. I LOVED the CAST! :D
The first rule of remakes: Don't fuck with the original.
So we won't; instead we'll livestream it.

Film 153 (Goal: 300) of 2024:
I've had a love-hate relationship with the Scream franchise. I didn't care for Scream 2 and Scream 3. Finally getting around to Scream 4, after putting it off for many years, I think I have a new favourite in the franchise. Obviously, I really enjoyed this.
I can't pinpoint exactly what got me - as some of this stuff is pretty standard Scream. The meta commentary about horrors and Hollywood is still there. It may even be a little overdone with it's focus on reboots. I even made a prediction or two that turned out to be correct. But the film got me in the 3rd act, and I think that's what pushed it to the next level. Some good kills here, plenty of gore. I couldn't ask for anything more.
Really great cast here as well. Sure, you've got some of the core returnees, in Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox and David Arquette. But joining them are notable names in Emma Roberts, Hayden Panettiere, Anna Paquin, Lucy Hale, Kristen Bell, Adam Brody - along with Rory Culkin, Marley Shelton, Nico Tortorella; among others.
Scream 4 is a fantastic outing for the 4th film in any franchise. Plenty of horror franchises start putting out garbage by this point. Scream avoids that with it's meta lens (with a particular focus on finding success in the modern world), and with some revelations that pay off.
This ones a fun one. I love a lot of the cast, emma roberts and hayden panettiere being long time favorites of mine, so it's always enjoyable to see them have fun. The movies a bit on the nose at times and a little rough but i enjoy the killer twist and i think there's a lot of iconic little moments throughout
I actually really enjoyed this one. It was definitely better than the second and third. I’m ready to see the new generation of the scream movies and see where they go.
Very decent return of the Scream franchise, 11 years after the third movie.
I thought the idea of Jill succeeding was such an unexpected twist and therefore I find it a bit disappointing that they didn't do more with that. I feel like it could have ended with her being interviewed as she is put in the ambulance, and then have a sequel where people find out the truth.
I believe this was supposed to be the start of a new trilogy, I'm happy we got a different trilogy another 11 years later.
I never thought I'd say this about a franchise but I want to watch all these films again...super skeptical of the recent ones though with, you know, Wes being dead and all.
This one clicked at the end for me - not just at the awesome Emma Roberts climax but also at the end credits where the words "Dedicated to Paul Craven" pop up directly after a film about generational trauma and time's inevitably cyclical nature. The context of this being Wes' final film makes this script even more potent. Now I don't know if Wes' actual motivation for picking up this script was due to his late father but it's an exciting thought that kinda reminds me of Zack Snyder's 'Justice League' being dedicated to his dead daughter - even if it's not entirely true it doesn't really matter because the context greatly improves the film in a way that cannot be backtracked.
SCREAM is one of the most important film franchises of all time because the sequels are so self-aware that they are sequels to a more famous movie that it actually becomes inventive. Wes Craven seemed obsessed with nostalgia in so many of his projects so it's not surprising that he is responsible for some of the coolest sequels, a genre built from 'looking back' and often even straight-up reminiscing over the first film. Wes does have one rule about that though: DON'T FUCK WITH THE ORIGINAL.
In my head, I remember this as being closer to the third one than the original sequel. That is incorrect. This one was a quality reboot, with the signature Wes Craven touch, and the ending is GREAT. It’s a shame that this reboot didn’t get more movies like 5 and 6 are getting now.

Choosing between Scream 1, 2, 3 and 4, I'll definitely choose this one. Globally better acting (I think) and a story-line a bit more elaborate than the previous ones. Can't wait to watch the new Scream movies, hoping the suspense will be a lot more untenable.
This is the one where they really stopped trying to make it clever and decided to just go straight-up slasher.
While not quite up to the standard set by the original Scream movie, Scream 4 definitely goes some way to rescue the franchise after the travesty that was Scream 3 and showcase it for the new generation of horror fans.
"Your lemon squares taste like ass."
The best sinse the original, Scream 4 is an excellent return to form as the "remake" of the franchise. It's so meta and self-aware that it's meta that it breaks the rules of the meta, making it the most unpredictable in the franchise. The meta stuff is borderline cringe but it's hilarious and I laughed more than with the other movies in the franchise. The cast is the best it's ever been and I love the new characters, my favorite being Kirby, she represents every horror fan out there and Hayden Panettiere is awesome. Gale is a fucking badass in this one and she honestly has the best lines. Perfect balance between scares and humor. Hands down my favorite Ghostface, so iconic and the third act was wild. The most fun of the bunch and Emma Roberts absolutely steals the spotlight.
Still waiting on the Stab movies, would totally be down for a stab-o-thon!
After a break of more than ten years, "Scream 4" (or SCRE4M) does a lot of things significantly better than its immediate predecessor. The plot has more exciting moments, the new characters actually work compared to the third installment, and the actors seem like they actually want to be there. After the second film was about horror sequels and the third one about trilogies, this time the topic of reboots is on the agenda. This is executed solidly, even if the film does drag a bit between the creative opening and the exciting finale. However, since the final whodunit reveal is the best of the entire series in my opinion, I can overlook the problems just fine. After the disappointing third film, "Scream 4" is fun again - and that's more than enough for me.
While the second and third movies were mostly forgettable if not for that one memorable kill, this fourth movie is actually pretty good, even if it lacks iconic moments. This time it makes fun of remakes and reboots, and the way it imitates situations and characters we have already seen in the past kind of reminded me of “Metal Gear Solid 2”. It bothered me at the beginning, but after the ending, I have to say they pulled it off pretty well. As the tradition goes, it can be a lot of silly plot choices and poor acting to handle, but Sidney’s aunt still managed to do the worst performance I’ve seen in a long while.
i think what i like most about the scream movies is that if you want to, you can end up being totally surprised by the killers' identities. there are enough red herrings and misdirections that unless you actively try to figure it out you can just enjoy the ride. and since it's satirizing itself half the time, those red herrings and misdirections don't take away from the overall experience at all. definitely love the first two movies most but this eked out past the third in terms of overall quality. plus so many cute cameos.
Scream 4 brings the series back on form. It's well aware of the meta and the genre and its all handled with style. Seeing Sydney coming full circle and not being the victim (as we saw her arc culminate in last film).
Some great red herrings and bait n switch. Also watching this 10 years later, Kirby is way gayer than I remember. Love it.
Here we have a sequel that gets a lot of unfair hate. Sure, the characters are not the most well-written ones and act stupid for most of the film and yes it feeds of nostalgia like no other, but it’s also so much fun to watch.
Like, this film is hilarious. No kidding, I can’t help but laugh throughout it because it’s so freakin‘ funny. And I‘m pretty sure it knows it’s funny.
It’s a remake/reboot/sequel hybrid that constantly makes fun of Reboot-Mania and while it uses every cliché possible it does so why winking at the audience.
And yeah, Sidney has more lives than Michael Meyers. Dewey is still incompetent as hell. Game is still the best.
The opening sequence(s) is actually kinda brilliant and so is the Killer reveal. Of course it’s not on the same level as Billy and Stu, but it’s probably my second favorite Scream unmasking, because Jill is hilariously over the top crazy and Emma Roberts goes all out on it.
I enjoy the ending and how it screws itself over with the message that the original is always better. Though it would have also been funny had Jill gotten away with it and to see what that Scream 5 would have been. Still, it’s such a fun watch during Halloween time.
Wes Craven did it again. It's official that Scream franchise has zero bad films and Sidney Prescott is the most powerful protagonist in horror films! I liked this better than the third. This one reintroduces itself to new generation, brings fresh ideas to the franchise and effortlessly blends those freshness with nostalgia. It definitely lacks some of the humor of the originals but I loved the direction this one took with the meta approach. It's mostly unpredictable and has a lot of twists and turns. I love the new and returning characters, love all the horror film references, nice to see Pegg & Frost made an appearance. I was laughing hysterically when I saw Robert Rodriguez name as a director of Stab! It's been a great time watching all sequels, now I'm ready for Scream (2022)!
So, I've been watching once again all the movies in Scream franchise and this one used to be one of my favorites. Now, I don't like it as much as I did before or at least as much as I thought I would.
The opening scene is cool, there's Kristen Bell and Anna Paquin as characters of Stab 6 or something like that. We have all the self-awareness and metalanguage of the horror genre and previous films, it just doesn't seem so fresh or new though. There's some interesting observations of the contemporaneous way of making horror films, but nothing beyond that.
I liked the new additions to the cast, Emma Roberts did a good job. The old characters still remain entertaining. The ending is pretty satisfying, the revelation is good. Jill's plan and her reasons for doing that make some sense, although she's very much a psychopath. The scene where she inflict damage to herself is really good. And the killers stabbing each other plan never works.
It is a good movie, but the previous ones did it better and before Scream 4.
Scream 4 is but another uninspired horror film that’s more about cheap scares and less about story. Returning to where the series started, the film finds Sidney going back to Woodsboro on the anniversary of the original murders and Ghostface coming after her family. Campbell, Cox, and Arquette return once again, and are joined by Emma Roberts, Hayden Panettiere, and Rory Culkin. While not as insulting as Scream 3 was, this chapter seems needless and repetitive. There are some clever callbacks to the previous films and the kills are rather intense, but the characters are too underdeveloped for any of it to have much of an impact. Scream 4 fails to revive the series, and instead delivers a mediocre horror film that offers the same old Scream formula.
How did Peeping Tom start the slasher genre - opposed to psycho when
a) No one knows it
b) It premiered 7 November 1961 in the US, while Psycho premiered 16 June 1960.
Yes, peeping Tom premiered 7 April 1960 in the UK, but since pirating movies wasn't really a thing back then, psycho clearly started the genre (while it wasn't the first - at least in the UK it wasn't...)
The killer clearly didn't do his due dilligence - researching his questions...
Some goofy moments hold the movie back from greatness. Anthony Anderson seeming to think he's in another Scary Movie film didn't help. Still, Wes Craven's last film being a Scream movie was a fitting end to his great career.
Go back in time and don't cast Anthony Anderson and the movie would be better lol. He was totally over the top trying to be funny like he was in yet another Scary Movie film.
The beginning also plays for laughs too much. Once a real killer actually does show. It was less satisfying than one of the Stab film murders.
The film also has the biggest identity crisis of the films not knowing if it is a Comedy or an actual Horror film.
Scream 4 isn't really bad but Wes Craven deserved a better last film. I am happy that My Soul to Take wasn't his last movie at least...
It's so bad one could think it actually belongs to the "Scary Movie" parody franchise. It's a parody of itself and a bad one at that.
Messed up the whole trilogy
Muchos años depues, Sidney regresa a su pueblo natal y de nuevo aparece Ghostface para sembrar el terror.
Pronto este clásico de terror seguira pero esta vez a traves de TV
what @tarynrenae said. the opening had me laughing pretty good when i saw it in theaters. from there on, you know it's going to be ridiculous..
If you go into this movie expecting a well-written and well-acted horror flick... you're mistaken. I enjoyed it for what it is, a cheesy 90's style slasher movie with several laugh out loud moments at the sheer ridiculousness of it all.
stupid movie, worst 15 bucks i ever spent.
also, i'm betting spork isn't really watching a movie that goes to theater in 4 months. bad scrape or trailer i'm guessing.
there's a scream 4... ha. that's awesome. i loved these movies. perfect 90s cheese horror.

Decent movie, not the best scream. I liked Emma Roberts and I did enjoy seeing Kristen Bell stab Anna Paquin. The biggest crime this movie makes is killing Alison Brie so early.
