Seance 2021

Big old pile of "Meh." Another example of the throw everything against the wall to see what sticks storytelling. Except for a few pretty good moments, this was a pretty forgetable film.

Terrible acting, weak and extremely predictable story, some scenes are very poorly done and poorly executed.

One lazy afternoon when you need some content to keep you awake while you work and you come accross this after few minutes of browsing. And then you realised you made a wrong choice and you are more sleepy.

I had low expectations but this movie even managed to surprise me… of how bad it is.

Boring movie, boring plot, mediocre acting, low quality cinematography. Just move on to your next movie of choice.

This is what I thought Black Christmas' remake would be. It's that movie but apolitical and a bit more shallow, but also more gay. I liked the supernatural element.

[Sitges FF] From a visual point of view, the film is more influenced by giallo than by traditional school horror movies (Barrett quotes Italian Massimo Dallamano and Spaniard José Manuel Larraz). It's closer to a whodunit than a slasher, slowly building the mystery until a more powerful third act. It works as a rehearsal for a future director rather than a film that contributes something to the genre.

St Trinians/Mean Girls meets a by-the-numbers slasher; Seance struggles to find an identity for much of its runtime, but when it finally lets its guard down and has some fun, it's already over. A shame because it does a nice blend of comedy and horror that isn't outright parody like others in the space and has some genuinely funny moments. Give it a whirl, there are much worse ways to spend 90 minutes.

Neato gothic murder mystery. The acting is top-notch, the characters are interesting, and the plot keeps you guessing.

Quite the boring watch that fails to be anything but generic for the most part. While the last third feels more like Barett's usual style it doesn't really match the tone of the movie and is far detached from reality.

Ok watch... Not really a horror. Not worth a second watch

Fairly enjoyable supernatural slasher, Simon Barrett is mixing genres to varying degrees of success. Overall it is competent and the performances are decent but it is lacking something. They sort of amp up some gore at the end which maybe would have helped earlier, but that could have been budgetary constraints. What was with the ceiling block knocking out our hero? Wacky stuff.

Fairly entertaining whodunnit slasher film combined with little supernatural elements but it's too formulaic and predictable. I could easily predict the killer right from the start. The story is enough to make me care about the characters involved. I has decent setting and I love the spooky vibe. There's not much blood in this film and the kills aren't anything special or graphic until it gets near the end. The third act is quite shocking but felt uninventive and unnatural. Before it reaches third act there's not enough buildup and the kills become very graphic all of the sudden. For a directorial debut, it's not too bad. I'm excited to see Barrett's upcoming projects as a director.
