She's Gotta Have It 1986

A heck of a debut. It's unpolished and flawed, but that's part of the appeal. It's a young filmmaker finding his voice before he became one of the top directors of his generation. And you can see that ambition in every frame. He challenges himself with capturing raw intimacy and succeeds with aplomb. There's an extended dance sequence, the only one in color, and the shift cleverly set-up. He hits black and white and color equally well, and there's some killer lines. The movie, like young Lee himself, oozes charisma. Nora is a bit thin of a character, more of a vehicle to explore three different kinds of black masculinity, and the rape scene is one even Lee considers a mistake. But the sum is more than its parts, and still worth a watch.

I can see why this film was so revolutionary for its time but watching in 2018, I wanted more plot and less filler. I personally wouldn't recommend as there are now better ways to gain insight into the themes and neighborhoods pictured here. The modern TV show on Netflix is much much better - superb in fact.
