Tonally uneven with a lightness of touch that was sometimes uncomfortable. Despite this, the film retains the power of its themes, and its a reasonably good tribute to the real ‘son of the south.’
If every white American could watch this, they might have the ability to get it. The near final scene where Zellner faces off with "Doc" really strikes the chord so many white people still need to get. Equality isn't white America losing its place. It's about all of America being better as a whole. Being better men, better women, better people for a better nation. Recognizing how we have failed so we can be better.

It was a compelling, engaging, and endearing film to watch. I greatly enjoyed the movie, and while the tone may have been a bit more optimistic than realistically plausible, I still found this to be a film that depicted a historical perspective of the Civil Rights Movement very well. In essence, it was a great story of a real-life person, and I recommend that others watch this film as well.
