This is the story of three Pansori singers in the 1960s, a father and his adoptive son and daughter. The father teaches them the art of pansori. The son flees while the daughter stays with their father. The movie starts when the now-adult son goes searching for his sister. Their story is told through flashbacks.
I don’t really know how to start this review. This movie is a real masterpiece. It is one of the movies that touched me the most. Watching this movie, I couldn’t stop my tears. One of the last scenes got me crying for a long time. From the acting to the scenery through the story, everything was good. The rhythm is slow and the movie takes time to set up scenes and moments that feels real. That long-take scene where the song “Jindo Arirang” while walking through the countryside is absolutely beautiful. The emotions in this movie are raw, never exaggerated and always feel real. The father who vicariously lives through his children; the daughter who sacrifices everything for her art; the son who get away to live his own life. In a way, “Sopyeonje” is a pansori itself. A story of sadness and regret, the emotion of “han”. Beautiful art, Through pain and sadness, the most beautiful thing is art... If you want to know what “Han” is, I think it's a good movie. This emotion can almost be instinctively felt while watching this movie, and it certainly overwhelmed my feelings. A beautiful movie that I highly recommend.
