Spider 2002

I didn’t expect it to be that great.

Slow, dark, and unsettling. You’re never quite sure what is real and what exists in the mind of Spider. Superb performance from Ralph Feinnes.

A man who uses socks as wallets is discharged from a mental institution and returns to his hometown. Taking up residence in some kind of rehabilitation center, the man ends up reliving childhood memories, and, needless to say, our narrator is far from reliable.

The film marks the beginning of Cronenberg’s psychologically focused phase, and is relatively restrained by his usual standards. However, when it comes to the psychodrama with unreliable narrators, we're really at a noob level here. It’s well executed, but everything ties up too neatly without anything particularly ambiguous or compelling.

A well-crafted and acted psychological drama which explores into the mind of a schizophrenic. It's one of those films that I appreciate more than I enjoy. This is quite a big change from his previous works but still in the strangely familiar territory. It's very slow, though it's not long, it feels like it is and the exploration of its theme isn't very thorough. But I really dig the organic approach of flashbacks and it's pretty effective at getting you into the mind of the protagonist. There's no body horror and it leans more on the drama side, but I still find it captivating nonetheless. Ralph Fiennes puts on a fine performance and Miranda Richardson is excellent as well.
