Spontaneous 2020

Growing up is difficult enough, but when your classmates start exploding around you? Well, it's just mind blowingly awful. The film, on the other hand, is great. A simple romantic tale told in a way that Cronenberg would be proud of.

I’m such a sucker for narrative style that the quick cuts and fourth wall breaking hooked me right at the start. I’m also a sucker for movies that gleefully mix and play with different genres, so this movie really played for me. I was surprised how much I liked it and I think it really stuck the landing in quite a ride

Sweet and unique. Everything was good until the final act.

Really very good movie, It was not explained why people explode but the story that unfolds in the middle of the film I thought it was super cool.

Pretty solid out of nowhere flick that I happened to see on crave (here in Canada). Good chemistry between the leads , a bonkers plot, but the chemistry and humour carried it. Some decent feels moments throughout (the gf needed tissues) that weren't too forced.
7.4 for me.

With my sister wanting me to watch the new romantic movie she liked, ‘Purple Hearts’, I had to show her one of my favorite romantic movies, ‘Spontaneous’. This movie is magical and it still seems like it’s basically unknown. It is 100% a high school love story, that deals with the metaphorical hardships of life. It’s got serious meanings, yet doesn’t take itself too seriously. The interesting part of the movie is that if the movie was as is, but some serious illness that was taking out a bunch of kids, it would be a tearjerker. If it leaned into some cheesy conflict, it probably wouldn’t work. If they lean a little harder, it’s probably not very good. But pushing the issue balls to the wall to get their point across, simply really works. I’ve watched this movie three times now, and I’m excited for the next time I get around to it.

This film worked incredibly well on a number of levels. First, the beginning half of the film had these wonderful interactions among Katherine Langford, Hayley Law, and Charlie Plummer that showed amazing chemistry across the board. I can't think of a film in recent memory, where the cast was so well-connected to one another. Second, this film was a heartfelt metaphor on what it was like to suffer traumatic loss during our teenage years, where we weren't fully equipped to deal w/ that type of pain, yet. In our teen years, our minds hadn't been fully formed, and too many of us were required to deal w/ components of life we weren't capable of understanding. This film delved into those areas in an albeit completely new and interesting, if not somewhat comical, way. I was so impressed by Brian Duffield's script and his ability to direct this underrated gem. Katherine Langford again showed what tremendous range she had as an actor, and I very much look forward to more great roles from her.

There is something about this man. This was my fourth watch through, and I still really love it. It’s a dark humor, 4th wall breaking masterpiece, that is both a sweet teenage romance movie, and hilarious thriller gem. I will sure as well watch this many more times, and I still wonder why this one hasn’t been talked about more.

Well this movie surprised me! It's not an easy movie to sell with a narrative about exploding teens. The movie however is so much more than that, a story of romance, mystery and the hardships of early adulthood. Coupled with the subtle digs at politics and modern day materialism this movie worked on so many levels. The last scene can be overlooked, the message was already delivered through the storyline, felt like it undermined the point some what. Regardless, it's a surprisingly good watch with good performances.

For the most part, I did enjoy this movie. It's funny, quirky, entertaining, and weird. What I have a problem with is there wasn't even an attempt to explain why the kids were exploding. Although the explosions were pretty cool :).

How I rate:
1-3  = seriously! don't waste your time
4-6  = you may or may not enjoy this
7-8  = I expect you will like this too
9-10  = movies and TV shows I really love!

Just for the originality of the plot it's worth watching, but the execution could have been much better.

This movie ripped my heart out, I'm still not over that character death and I watched this weeks ago. I loved the characters in this movie, especially Katherine Langford's role, I just related to her a lot and felt like she could be a real person. I love how it started off as a kinda dark comedy then switched and turned into an existential type film. Honestly the whole narrative of "death happens, bad shit happens, you just have to live" really made me think a lot about my own life and I didn't expect that from this movie. Very impressed
