Probably not as popular as Lethal Weapon from the same year. But one of my favorite buddy cop movies either way. Dreyfus is especially great and has chemistry with Estevez and Stowe. Character actor Dan Lauria (The Wonder Years) and Forrest Whitaker are also good as the morning Stake Out team. Lauria returns in the sequel but as the captain this time. While Aidan Quinn makes for a good villain as an escaped criminal who the cops hope will show at Stowe's house. The happy ending where Stowe suddenly forgives Dreyfus for being a cop all along. I don't totally buy. It’s still a much better movie than the second one though. It’s also clever that when Dreyfus has to guess a line to a movie. Esteves says “this was no boating accident” which is from Jaws. Dreyfus’ character has no idea what movie it is from lol
