Straight Up 2020

I really thought I was gonna hate this movie, and I'm glad there was a gay character that expresses how offensive and damaging a portrayal of a gay coded man doing his best to live a heteronormative life is... but actually, I loved all the non-conventional parts of it. I love that at the centre of it, was an asian male romantic lead (almost never happens) that is definitely on the autism spectrum navigating a non-conforming romantic life.

I also love that that the ending suggests that they were able to make their relationship work by introducing a 3rd person into the relationship... one that gets both of them and hopefully is able to provide each of them the things they couldn't get from each other. Perfect! Wish we could've seen more of their happy non-monogamous relationship

This movie is like an episode of the Gilmore girls where they just talk and talk and talk....

I don't know if I can finish it.

I suppose I wouldn't feel so conflicted, if it was "funny," but I don't think it's funny.

It's so hard to find a fresh angle in a rom com these days. On the surface this movie sounds a bit gimmicky: a man of questionable sexual identity decides to try to enter into a relationship with a woman after years of acting like a gay man because everyone told him that he was gay. He meets a woman and they instantly hit it off. From there the movie does a fantastic job navigating cliches and paths that we've been down in other movies. While it is a comedy and very funny it is at its heart a drama with a very important question at its center. As the movie goes along the focus of the film slowly changes from the man to the woman until the final scene, which is perfect. I don't know if this film would be as good as it is without Katie Findlay - she is a revelation.

Sweet, funny, and pleasantly non-conformist; I am talking about both the film and the main character. Nice.
