After flipping through some of the reviews I am a little surprised that so many people treated this movie as if it was a breezy novel that one reads on the beach while on vacation. Sure, we've seen some of this before - a curmudgeon is placed in a situation where her dour outlook on life is challenged. The film does an amazing job at peeling back the layers of the woman's life. Too often these movies end up with a hallmark channel feel to them but I didn't get that here, probably because of the last act was delivered. Also, Gemma Arterton is nothing short of incredible in this movie as her character bore the weight of the ever-changing emotions. Sometimes it just feels good to watch be watching a movie - I felt this way during this film.

The first half of the movie was excellent. Then when the revelation came everything went downhill. There was no need for that at all. Also very convenient to kill the guy so they could be together and have a child.

Stories have to come from somewhere...

I can't leave the comment of this film blank:( I think I shouldn't, but it can't be explained in words about the emotions in this movie.
My tears, the occasional shock that takes my breath away.. especially those romantic moments:)

Would you think it was strange
if a woman loved another woman?

Easily the best movie I've seen for the year thus far. If I'd known this was so lovely I'd have watched it ages ago, at least twice!

The story is absolutely beautiful and beautifully told, AND it has a happy ending... be still my heart!

Love in difficult times. A story that is saved by an excellent performing of Gemma Arterton, delicate, moving in some moments, and of the children protagonists. The script of the film is like the place described in it, Summerland: you must have faith to believe it. But it's always a delight to see Penelope Wilton, even if it's only for a few minutes.

We've seen it all before but don't let that detract from a good story well delivered.
