This movie could have been great if not for the racism. WTF ???

The American Society of Magical Negroes (2024). It's amazing how hate can spearhead this movie to have a 2.7 rating and death at the theater. Though it takes time to get there. This movie has a heavy message. Loved it!

Had potential, wasted after 10 minutes. Boring and obvious. :(

As an idea, this had major potential. The fever dream feeling for the first 30 mins went hard, so much so that i genuinely thought I was dreaming. The messages and jokes took me out, though, in a bad way. It had some sense in how the 'American Society' works, but it felt way too unrealistic. I guess it hit how race works in most scenarios, but it focused on race entirely, which isn't really the case. I hope I'm making more sense than this movie. The acting was stiff, but the dialogue had some potential. All in all, it's the opposite of an escape, but it gives an inside to black/white stereotypes.

Not good...the dialogue was dry and corny making it really cringe and hard to watch. I get that they were trying to keep the interactions natural but instead it made both Aron and Lizzy feel so unsure of their roles. The middle of the film was enough to make the person behind me fall asleep. A shame since the climactic scene was quite important but also didn't fit the atmosphere of the rest of the film.

A satire that goes so far setting up generic stereotypes that it loses sight of what it is satirizing.

Needed a better young actor in the lead role to make the movie believable. Justice Smith didn't bring anything but blandness to the role. Even at the end when he was supposed to suddenly speak up about race relations, there was no realism to it. It was just dialogue he was acting out. It seemed so fake because now was he going to an outspoken blackman all his life? Constantly speaking up about racism? I can't imagine he would do anything other than go back to being bland like he had been the whole length of the movie. So basically a bad unbelievable ending made the whole movie feel like a waste of time.

In contrast, David Allen Grier was good. Really, he was the only reason to watch.

The American Society of Magical Negroes - :heart:x7

This was a really good, interesting, and thought-provoking movie. It is a light-hearted look at social and racial inequity.

How I rate:
1-3  = seriously! don't waste your time
4-6  = you may or may not enjoy this
7-8  = I expect you will like this too
9-10  = movies and TV shows I really love!
