Despite it's failings, this twisty Lovecraftian flick is well worth a watch and then a re-watch. Don't expect the traditional horror film gimmicks, instead prepare to be take a journey through a completely different kind of world where your nightmares have existed since the beginning of time. I think history will judge this a "cult" classic.
A fairly interesting and well put-together film, but there are some loose ends that never got tied up and the significance of the ending wasn't very well laid out.
The first 25 minutes and last 25 minutes were excellent. The rest was just alright. Left too ambiguous with too many plot holes when you start thinking about it.
Even after 137mins of watching this I'm still left with the same question I started with all that time ago; what the fuck is this about? This is an awful film to sit through, so just don't. You'll be all the better for it.

Rhett beginning was great thought it was going to be about creature! Then ghost not even close. too weird and no answers. won't watch again.

It has been a long time since I have seen a movie that was this good. The filming and acting was top notch. The story was deep and really made you think. This is not your average horror film. It requires you to pay attention and use your brain. The score was perfect throughout. The only downside was that I was not able to see this in a movie theater. It was made for the large screen, heavy sound, and a dark room. That being said, turn the lights out and crank up the TV.

This movie is a complex, multi layered story. This is what made the movie a win for me. Instead of it being a run of the mill horror movie, with the same rehashed story we've seen a million times. The Empty Man takes an idea and runs with it.
This movie was one of my favorites in recent years. Movies that go into deep, otherworldly ideas and executed well are rare.
So 2020 really did have no redeeming qualities at all.
This turned out to be a real tease. First impression, at 2:16:00 run-time, especially after it took 22:16 to even reach the opening credits, I started off thinking this was going to be wayyyyyyy too long. Then I got into the movie, and at the halfway mark of 1:10:00 (after taking a break to move some furniture) I happily started the second half. By the end of the second half, I was convinced - nay, I was BEYOND convinced - that my first impression had been spot-on and this movie took far too long. To add to the bitterness of such a lengthy movie, it teases you in the first half with all the ingredients to become a really good horror movie: lots and lots of suspense, great lighting, great soundtrack, great unseen villain, and even a tiny spot of blood and gore to really draw you into it. And then...the second half. It becomes an utterly ridiculous, hard-to-follow, nutcase story that makes no sense. The final few minutes make a hasty attempt to wrap up all the stuff that's been hinted at through the movie, but even then it leaves so many question marks and you're left wondering "What just happened?" I cannot give this a thumbs-up in any shape or form simply because it was so long and so disjointed/disappointing in its overall story. If you decide to give this a watch, be forewarned that it starts off with something of a "hook": a 22:16-long opening that definitely draws you in, and the first hour really adds to the intrigue. After that, however, everything just turns to mush and makes no sense, there's minimal "creepiness" and only one really bloody scene. (This is not a gore-fest, folks; this is more about mind-games than anything else.) Would I lump this in with The 20 Best Horror Movies Ever Made ? Not on your life. I'll stop short of saying "I wish I had that time back..." but I will say, I wish I had at least that last hour back. Not recommended.
They tried so hard but didn't get so far.
The build up was absolutely intriguing but it was badly let down in the final 15, do yourself a favour to avoid disappointment and save over 2 hours of your life, don't bother with this.

Very solid movie that makes you think. You are left with thinking about what happened. It wasn’t a mindless movie and kept me focused.
A very long, very messy horror film with certain scenes that confused me.
However, I think director David Prior has fantastic potential as a filmmaker and writer.

wow that was unexpected. very interesting premise, well told and really creepy. its slow and has no really jumpscares but it is still haunting. the soundtrack does the trick and the ending is not typical hollywood. glad to have seen this. recommended for everyone who likes creepy eerie movies without the horror smashed in to your face.

Joking aside, Empty Man is one of the better creepypasta horror films, that is, of those where an urban legend is the premise, but its to long.
Director David Prior, who previously did bonus material for David Fincher films (Zodiac, The Social Network) among others, creates a horror film with Emtpy Man that stands out from the crowd, but only with a knife edge.
Especially the beginning, which seems detached from the rest of the plot at the start, kept me at least glued to it. The film hits several rakes and keeps the viewer at least so in the spell, because the question arises again and again, where the film goes but without seeming arbitrary or half-baked.
It moves between horror and thriller and is both cosmic and psycho.
In the end, the film perhaps wants too much and perhaps loses itself in the process, but from my perspective, it is one of those films that did well to want too much and fail somewhat at it, rather than going the predictable and boring way of many other films.
I wish it was that creepy skeleton going around killing people

Incredibly thrilling ride but needs to be trimmed down. I love seeing this kind of story in horror films. It starts out with a very spooky intro, where one of the hiking member descends into madness as he falls prey to a mysterious deity. Then it moves to modern time where a group of teens from a small town mysteriously disappear. I don't know what to say. This film goes from really great, to really awful, to really satisfying. The rest of the film doesn’t really live up to the opening scene. It feels like too many films crammed into one. However the journey is deeply weird and genuinely unsettling. Very atmospheric and tense the entire way through with right amount of ambiguity. It also surprisingly has no jumpscares.
Watched that accidentally. I am not disappointed. I like it.
There are scenes which could be cut, but the plot is good. Acting is well done too.
I would not call this movie a horror, but it is definitely thrilling.
I would not watch it again, but will look for similar movies.

lovecraft vibes, with a score and cinematography that makes you feel weirdly off-balance. i'd say that was the strongest part of the movie—the inherent suspense and tension throughout it made me thoroughly enjoy every minute. and then the ending happened, and i don't know, it just felt like a letdown after all that unnerving suspense.
it definitely started stronger than it ended, and the introductory scene feels like it could've been a mind blowing short on its own. acting is great, pacing is good, it just didn't really pay off with its ending. i know what i would have wanted for an ending and since this followed an existing graphic novel, maybe that ending wasn't an option, which i get. BUT STILL.
I thought horror movies were supposed to be scary of have a bit of gore...only the intro scene was actually good.
Don’t let the generic title fool you. This is no disaster of Slender Man proportions. Instead, the movie is thoughtfully written, visually interesting, and well acted throughout. As others have said, it echoes Lovecraft in its telling, but it brings its own philosophy too. The ending is a little baffling but whoever said a horror film had to tie everything up neatly? It might not rank as a horror classic but it certainly tries hard to be more than a cookie cutter horror flick...as I said at the beginning, it’s no Slender Man!

I really enjoyed this movie. If you are a fan of lovecraft horror you will like this. It takes a little thought and a second watching to understand. Really well shot and thoughtful scenes keep you interested.

The Empty Man. I was really looking forward to this film when I found it somewhere and I would be able to watch it. Unfortunately, my ideas from this film did not come true and the film became my great disappointment, and if it weren't for the slightly interesting ending and resolution of this film, I would probably be bored. It's a pity that the film wasn't what it was presented for, then it could be a very good film, but unfortunately it didn't happen and the film became a rather boring spectacle. On the other hand, I think that this film will find some viewers.
