Feel like this film need a much more positive review than the other one on here because this film is fantastic and having grown up in the UK it is viewed as a classic. This film has so much heart and honestly even though it is laugh out loud, it also has its emotional moments in between which will tickle your heartstrings because even though this film is short it develops these characters amazingly.
The plot revolves around a few guys who are down on their luck after the steel industry in Sheffield goes under and are having to go to the Job Center every day, but then one day they decide that they are going to try and do a strip show for the locals to make some money. All of the actors in this film bring their A-Game and I am so happy most of them became more popular after this with Robert Carlye (Gaz), Mark Addy (Dave Horsefall), Tom Wilkinson (Gerald Arthur Cooper) and Paul Barber (Horse) just giving really funny but at the same time beautiful performances.
Please give this film a watch as it is really funny but at the same time, it has its moments of emotion. To me, this film is about friendship but also it is about community and the only reason I didn't rate it 9/10 is because I wish it was longer.
This is a movie of many themes though it’s a comedy first. What’s unusual about it is that the core comedic theme is not longer relevant (my father embarrassingly laughed hysterically when middle-age guys stripped, but with my millennial values, I’m more like “get naked if you want to get naked, what’s the big deal?”).
That said, its other humour has remained hilarious and quaint and touching and man are there some heavy supplementary themes; all of which are handled with tactful respect because at the end of the day, these are regular people forced to sell sex to make ends meet.
Excellent movie that’s walked the line perfectly between comedy and drama. And a shout out to Tom Wilkinson - I thought he stole the show!
This movie hasn't aged well not because of the social behaviour changes but the state of the economic is much worse and people are in but also the not being very shocking or scandalous.
