The Ghost Ship 1943

Good movie. Some laughable moments like the narration for the “Deaf Mute’s” thoughts. The acting wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t good either. I had a boss that behaved like the captain, where job safety issues were concerned. This crew should have been more concerned with their captain’s behavior.

The Ghost Ship is a psychological horror about a young third officer signing on with a ship whose captain is obssessed with authority and cannot recognise his own incompetence. He believes the captain slowly decends into madness and tries to warn the ship crew. This is the last Val Lewton horror film I've been meaning to catch and I thoroughly enjoyed it. There's nothing supernatural about the story but it's an unsettling look of what power can do to a man. Great use of claustrophobia and oppressive sound to invoke fear. Some marvelous performances here combined with a creepy atmosphere and sprinkled with some homoerotic undertones. The perspective from the mute adds a nice touch and it's also surprisingly graphic!
