it was a good laugh. will be a good movie to see on FX movies and such.
Ugh. That was awful. A decent premise and cast is completely squandered on this unoriginal, boring mess. I didn't so much as chuckle once. I wasn't expecting a comedy so dull.
Pretty funny, everyone in it is good. Just a little meandering. It never feels like it has a strong direction for what is going to happen next. All the jokes still land, just hard to keep track of the pacing.
Surprisingly more funny than I thought it would be. Will Ferrell is his crazy usual self and Amy Poehler is great too. She just doesn't look right as anything but a blonde. Not saying that she is ugly its just I'm so use to seeing her as a blonde. I loved Jason Mantzoukas. He still plays the same guy he did in the league but its still funny. The cameo by Jeremy Renner was hilarious. That whole scene where he loses his arms had me laughing hard.
Not a good movie, but some scenes made me laugh so hard that I have to give it a 6.
A lot of people in the room loved it though.
The plot of The House is surprisingly heartfelt, and that tone is maintained throughout - despite how crazy moments become.
The story here is very simple: a mother and father are trying to send their daughter to college, but it's more than they can afford, so the solution is to open a casino. What could go wrong?
The movie follows the common beats of any comedy. No big surprises here. The highlight, for me, was a scene involving a finger - I'll leave it at that. Aside from that, there were no big laughs, but the film was entertaining from start to finish.
Ferrell and Poehler are both great, and more subdued than they tend to be.
Will Ferrell and Amy Poehler star in The House, a mediocre R-rated screwball comedy. When the town council revokes their daughter’s college scholarship, the Johansens decide to partner up with a friend to open up an underground casino in order to get the money. Ferrell and Poehler (both former SNL cast members) play their characters way over-the-top, as if they’re straight out of an SNL sketch. And the jokes are kind of hit and miss; with a lot clichéd and stereotypical gags. Though it delivers a few laughs, The House is a pretty forgettable and formulaic film.
Good silly fun. Just what you want in a comedy
As someone who loves Amy and Will, I gotta say... This movie was kinda weak... Gave some laughs but have seen better movies of them.
Well to be frank, it's not a drop on the floor and rolling around funny kind of movie, BUT it's not by any means a boring movie. If you're looking for a deep and meaningful story, you're in the wrong place. If you're looking for a movie to enjoy with the kids (there is some strong language and the idea of 'making love') or just one to enjoy with bored friends, this would be your movie.
I can't say much about the plot, but you can basically turn off your brain, crack open a beer or light up, sit back and watch this for the heck of it.
If the film had starred anybody else - Rob Schneider and Katharine Heigl, for example - this would have been a complete misfire. Thankfully, it stars Ferrell and Poehler, so despite the film's thin premise, it is worth taking a gamble on.
Horrible. Didn't laugh even once.
Entertaining enough to watch once. I really struggled to like this movie beyond a reason to kill time. Comedy is typical of this group with little branching out to really develop much more than superficial laughs.
I thought it was ok, it had some really funny moments with all the extravaganza on the scenes but overall it is a nice 90 minute to pass. Loved all the actors which were from many tv shows i watch
"If you can't beat the house, be the house" - according to this motto, the Johannes decide to create an underground casino with their friend Frank in their suburban neighbourhood. Their motivation are money problems due to wich they lost their last savings at Vegas.
As expected with such kind of comedy movies, the jokes are pretty simple and mostly based on the stupidity of our characters, which for me is seldom a reason for laughter. So, taking the comedy part, this movie was only seldom funny to me (some sex jokes, he's to stupid for simple calculations, etc.). Also Will Farrell is not someone I'd consider a great or funny actor.
Considering the plot, there is also not too much that is offered to the audience. And taking into account the number of high ranking movie and TV actors, one might wonder why one sees them in such a simple movie that does not demands anything, and gives them no chance to show their talent.
However, there's one thing that speaks for this movie and that is the absurde ideas this movie offers, e.g. the slow mo fighting scenes, the slasher elements, the absurd amount of blood, the image of the gang running through the neighbourhood, collecting money, the kick scene with Nick Kroll. Those where some inspired ideas that worked greatly with the movie and because of them being so absurd I had a number of scenes where I could actually laugh.
In the end it's an okey movie. Nothing that you'll have to see, nothing I would recommend, but also not a movie that annoyed me, or that I would deem a total waste of time. Which is why I rated it a solid middle 5/10. Let this one run in the background, when your local tv station plays it - with some friends, crisps and lights on, and then you won't regret it ;)
Proof that The House does not always win. This chlamydia of a film had actors trying too hard and a script that didn't try hard enough. That being said, you have to try really hard to ruin a film with Will Ferrell, Amy Poehler, Jason Mantzoukas and Jeremy bloody Renner, but writer/director Andrew Jay Cohen pissed all over this film extra hard to make sure not one gag was funny. An adult who is afraid to add numbers!? Really!?
Will Ferrell should be taken outside and shot for this utter dross. No change there then!

Will Ferrel, Amy Poehler, And Jason Mantzoukas are the fantastic trio behind this hilarious comedy. Go in enjoying the ridiculous moments and the fun of this insane movie. The movie takes you for a hell of a ride in unexpected situation and the jokes totally land.
A fun roller-coaster of a movie and you will be laughing your heads off. Suburban insanity with a comedic twist.
Don't over think it, just enjoy it.
