The Kid Detective 2020

— Is it possible he was involved in something dangerous?

— No. He would never do drugs.

— No, he would never gamble.
— Demon worship?
— No, he would never worship a demon. :joy:

This movie was really good in how it upended many tropes about the detective movie genre, there was a lot of subtle humorous digs aimed at fictional PIs and the things they do. Setting the story in a world of teenagers gave the story the ability to inject levity in what is really a story about a man who loses faith in himself and his journey to regaining some of that faith back.

The leads did a good job acting, and the direction was not too shabby either. Would recommend.

Movie was absolutely amazing. Like, wow, loved it so much. No idea what the other people didn't like about it. I've watch a ton of shitty shows and movies this year, but this one is in the top. Had no idea where it was headed, and damn did it get me in the first half ! That very last scene had me crying.

One of the most boring and unrewarding whodunit movies I've ever seen.

'The Kid Detective' is an awful title for this film. It's very dark and very funny.

Good little detective movie. If you’re like me and love anything with a PI you’ll definitely enjoy it.

This isn't a "whodunit" film.

It's a deconstruction of private detective tropes and a character drama depicting a very common life trajectory of an "overachieving" child becoming an "underachieving" adult, and how society teaches children/people to value life achievements above mental wellness and life satisfaction.

The final scene was the most fitting and poignant ending this film could have. It wasn't a cathartic moment, in a sense of relief or vindication. No, quite the opposite.
"Isn't it better to know the truth?"
Not for him, not at the moment. He probably had accepted the likelihood that Gracie was dead long ago. But now, knowing that she had been alive for 15 years, severely abused and mentally traumatized, possibly developmentally impaired, in the hands of someone he had never suspected. The enormous guilt he must've felt. It must've been soul-crushing for him to see his townspeople accept him as a hero again and his business booming.
"Getting any money out of that?"
Because that's all his father cared about, not his son's mental state.

An impressive feature film debut for writer/director Evan Morgan. I'm really interested in seeing what he makes next.

The title seems to be related to that tone of irony that we see throughout history. In fact, it works well for this character who faces in his adulthood the expectations that were created when he was young. It is actually a film that addresses a dramatic theme, a kind of vision of depression that has a thriller and comedy wrapper. A strange and brave mix that manages to find the necessary balance point.

Unfunny, boring and the characters was so bland. I have no idea why people like this. The revelation of whodunnit was really just…annoying.

Enjoyably quirky. The mystery is a little too easily resolved but the biggest draw here is Brody’s character who matters more than the case he is trying to solve. A sequel would be good, and even a TV show, but I don’t think either are likely to happen.

I liked this movie a lot. Even tho the mood is quite dour. There is some occasional humor sprinkled in.

The case that knocked him out of the limelight as a kid wrapped up and twisted itself around on itself quite nicely with the new case he gets at 31.

How I rate:
1-3  = seriously! don't waste your time
4-6  = you may or may not enjoy this
7-8  = I expect you will like this too
9-10  = movies and TV shows I really love!

Did not finish it complete best scene was the boy at the beginning with the wispering :).

I really want to rate this film higher than I have to... It is uncompromising in its vision. And that should be applauded.

It has a solid twist, it is eccentric and funny - and if they made a sequel, I'd be looking forward to it.

But there's issues... It is unevenly paced and drags quite heavily in the middle. Some gags don't work and that adds to the pacing issue.

And the final scene. I laughed with incredulity despite the filmmakers hoping for my seeing "a sense of relief/burden lifted/a life vindicated" in that would override my incredulity. It didn't.

7.5/10 but should have been a 9 in another world.

Wow. This was......... Bad. Terrible. Awful.
After 20 minutes, I was ready for it to actually start! For something to happen. Anything!
At the end, I was still waiting for something to happen!
A lot of it just didn't make sense.
The rest of it seemed to be just rubbish, swearing and excessive drug abuse to fill up time.
I couldn't see a plot, a storyline, or anything worth pointing a camera at.
Honestly, it seemed to be a movie about a miserable, drug addled moron who accidentally found a bad person.
My opinion, better to sit and watch paint dry instead.
All the talented story writers, script writers, authors and people trying to to get in to the field, but this is the one that gets made in to a movie? Very disappointed.

This movie was an okay watch. I don’t think it did anything remarkable or recommendable, but I enjoyed watching it. There’s certainly better detective movies out there, but this one is good enough by any standard.

Rating: 3/5 - 7.5/10 - Worth Watching

The Kid Detective is easily one of my favourite widely under-gushed about Canadian films. Nothing prepared me for how bleak it was going to be going in, but that made the viewing experience all the more enjoyable!

With the dizzying way the movie balanced its overall tone by brilliantly deconstructing average noir tropes in the narrative, it allowed for such an engaging demonstration of thematic shifting between the story’s intriguing mystery and it’s bold elements of dark comedy. It was literally so fun to experience a plot like this.

BONUS THOUGHT: Like everyone else who probably watched this flick, I can’t think of a more on-the-nose actor than Adam Brody to play a character like Abe Applebaum— a grown man living in the shadow of his past glory and potential. And I don’t mean this lightly when I say this is the best film he’s ever done!

What first felt like a sweet Wes Anderson style film took a very dark turn, wow. Enjoyed seeing Adam Brody again though.

The setup here has a lot of similarity with Mystery Team, a relatively unseen 2009 film starring Donald Glover and Aubrey Plaza. That film didn't leave much of an impression, but my recollection is that it skewed a lot more toward juvenile comedy, whereas this film plays the inherently comedic premise much more seriously, leaning only on dark comedy for levity. While I apparently also gave Mystery Team a 6 out of 10, I would definitely say I preferred this film. Not sure if that means I need to bump up this rating or lower that one, but I suppose that's always the trouble with subjective rating systems. In any case, this film is carried by an excellent performance by Adam Brody. His central character is interesting and well executed, enough so to overlook everything else being somewhat forgettable.

The crying at the end represents how I felt at wasting my time watching this. As well as when the man killed himself. That is how this movie made me feel. And to read comments where people say they want a sequel..... AHHHHHHhh!!!!

I would rather worship a demon!

A film that divides opinion must be worth a watch. I liked it. I liked the story and I liked the cast (even if I did see the late Anton Yelchin in the lead role). It's quirky and good humoured. Give it a try.

Generally I would eat up some quirky, dry, odd concept modern noir...but this film was a bit too lethargic for most of its run time, and the big solve lacked the feel of a truly earned climax. It just sort of...happens. Adam Brody and Sophie Nelisse were both great, however, and this role was absolutely perfect for Brody. There are also some hilarious individual moments, but they didn't quite embrace the depths of how odd this whole situation was. I can understand not wanting to dip too far into the absurd, but why not go all out?

I think it's not too bad. But it's very slow-paced, and this noir-ish style just didn't hit my taste. I can see why it divides opinion.

Streamed via Hulu (Starz)

Great final act but overall it felt inconsistent and took forever to get anywhere.

Mystery with a milder tone..

It was surprisingly good. But such a bad title.

I thought it alright, liked the idea but felt it lacked energy and did feel like it was fading away at times, also didn't really build up to much.
