The Little Mermaid 2023

I was nervous watching but I actually liked it a lot... Sue me!

I was pleasantly surprised by this movie. As a huge Disney fan, I have noticed that some recent live-action adaptations were leaning towards a more commercial direction that didn't resonate with me. However, this one exceeded all my expectations, particularly with Halle's portrayal of Ariel. Her voice is TRULY remarkable, paying a beautiful tribute to Jodi Benson, and her acting is pure, sweet, and perfectly suited for Ariel! She embodies the essence of the Little Mermaid, and the movie itself is a captivating, well-directed tribute to the beloved 1989 original. Without a doubt, it has secured a place as one of my favorite Disney live-actions!

does not deserve the hate

The flowing hair in the water looks so cartoony. Cgi is awful. The actors are basically imitated the original voices, instead of using their own.:wastebasket::poop:

This was surprisingly good. The casting for Ariel was perfect!

If you like musicals this movie is - just as many Disney movies - for you. Halle Bailey did an amazing job. Her performance was really good. My favourite character was the definitely crab it kind of carried the movie. One thing I absolutly did not like was the villain. She was so easily the worst part of the movie. She had so much weird monologue just to explain the story for the audience. Another bad point was the end fight. It was so unnecessary and cheaply done as well.

My personal rating:
-Plot (Story Arc and Plausibility): 7/10
-Attraction (Premise & Entertainment Value): 7/10
-Theme (Identity & Depth): 5.5/10
-Acting (Characters & Performance): 6.5/10 [Great performance from Halle Bailey but Melissa McCarthy just didn't do a great job and her character was the worst of them all.]
-Dialogue (Storytelling & Context): 4/10
-Cinematography (Visual Language & Lighting, Setting, and Wardrobe): 6/10
-Editing (Pace & Effects): 7.5/10
-Soundtrack (Sound Design & Film Score): 8/10
-Directing (Vision & Execution): 5/10
-The “It” Factor (One-of-a-Kind & Transcendent): 4/10 [It was like the 10th movie of the Little Mermaid or so.]

Overall: 5/10 || 54/100

Biggest POS for a movie from Disney. My 5 year old wanted to see this so bad and no joke that within 15 minutes he looked at me a and said "dad this is horse shit" I knew I raised my kid right and we snuck into watch transformers. This movie isn't worth it!!

3 Thoughts After Watching ‘The Little Mermaid’:

  1. Halle Bailey IS Ariel. She was absolute perfection. From voice to vibe, she captured her essence impeccably. I believe a star has officially been born.

  2. Melissa McCarthy had veryyy gargantuan tentacles to fill. And I think Pat Carroll would’ve been incredibly pleased with what she did with her sea witch.

  3. I thought they built upon the original film’s story in all the right ways. Fleshing it out to make a little more sense. Providing more substance. While not everything was picture perfect, it worked and gave fresh magic to a beloved story.

Bonus Thought: I thought it was a fantastic movie to look at, especially under the sea. Gorgeous colors and visuals. Eye candy all around. And that includes Jonah Hauer-King. :pound_symbol:snack

Am I the only one who thought Halle Bailey was great but the movie was bad?

Halle Bailey's magnetic presence is about the only thing this movie has going for it. When she's singing, it's amazing! Aside from her, though, it's pretty bad.

Other thoughts:
> Why is so much of this movie so dark?
> A lot of the CGI looks pretty bad.
> The "Scuttlebutt" song was SO bad.
> I still don't care about Eric.
> And they cut out my favorite scene, where Sebastian is chased by the chef!

I'd recommend rewatching the original instead.

I was not looking forward to this, but my daughter wanted to see it. The best part of the whole movie was the popcorn and that was pretty generic. Even my daughter who dragged me to this thought it was bad. 2 couples left the cinema during it and didn't come back. They were the lucky ones. :thumbsdown_tone1:

It's awful and soulless. go watch the original.

Like a surprise party, it's not really surprising but you have a good time anyway.

I wanted to like this and I get what I want.

Halle Bailey shines in this successful live-action remake and while they screw up the ending, the rest of the film is fun to watch and moves along at a good clip despite the singing.

My head gives this a 6, but my heart gives it a 7 and the first thing you need to know about me is I go with my heart.

May be Disney's best live action yet. Yes, there is some controversy surrounding the lead actress, Hailey Bailey, not fitting the part, but take out that controversy, she was fantastic. Outside of a couple new songs and some new small characters, the plot was essentially the same, good development, but more time could have been spent on the background of Ariel's family. It was also dragged on a tad. However, what made this film an A+ was the casting, music, and most of all the CGI and filming, especially for "A Part of Your World." Disney just keeps blowing my mind with the filming of these new live actions.

Another live-action remake by Disney that adds little from the original. I honestly enjoyed most of the land scenes, but the underwater scenes are quite wonky in their appearance. Overall, this has some nice additions, but there is nothing that stands out from the original.

loading replies

Halle Berry has an amazing voice. The visuals were were beautiful. Melissa McCarthy. Was spot on with Ursula.

Wasn’t big on Scuttle’s rap.

Prince Eric is adopted? To justify why the queen is portrayed by a black actress. (She played the role well.

Why are Ariel‘s sisters portrayed by actresses of different races and yet there’s no explanation for that given that they share the same mother and father?

Beauty and the beast is still my favourite live action version. Followed by the little mermaid.

Although I was skeptical, I changed my mind. Halle Bailey was perfect as the Little Mermaid Ariel. Her singing as well, even though I'm not a fan of the fact the songs were slighlty changed.

What I didn't love were the colours underwater in many scenes and the costume design, quite poor compared to other Disney Lliva ection and to the animation movie.

The film's reason of existence is still not answered, but among the live action tranpositions, it's the best (with the Book of Jungle).

LOVE LOVE LOVE

This wasn't nearly as bad as I had expected it to be. In fact, it's one of the better Disney live-action remakes. Halle Bailey is good as Ariel, and Melissa McCarthy is good as Ursula. I wasn't keen on most of the other cast members, and the film was super ugly at times (it's often very dark). I could also have done with less (preferably no inclusion of Awkafina as Scuttle), But there's no denying that some of the moments in this were actually rather good. The highlights were definitely the moments where Halle Bailey gets to sing.

I wish Disney would stop making these live-action remakes, as they will simply never hold up to the originals (unless they were to literally just remake the originals scene for scene in live-action), but I certainly didn't have a bad time with this one.

The chemistry between them <3

  • 1 star for Sebastian, his consistency in character was an enjoyable tether.
  • 1 star for Halle Bailey and that one hopeful moment of her meeting Eric for the first time, the whole song wasn't needed but that moment isolated was some nice production.
  • Maybe a half star for Eric, he tried his best and I think he deserved a bit better still.

Overall, disappointing and too dark. (quite literally for most of the runtime, where did the light and bright color go?) While the pacing felt all over the place, I was bored throughout. It didn't blow me out of the water, better to go re-watch the original. I do hope Halle Bailey, Jonah Hauer-King, Daveed Diggs, and Jacob Tremblay still prosper muchly going forward.

I really wanted to like this film, because The Little Mermaid was my very first Disney film. It came out the year I was born, and I loved it so much that I had the bed set, the toys, the clothes. For the record, I'm not technically disappointed in the casting for Ariel. Halle is a very lovely mermaid. Her being a different race in the live action versus the animated doesn't upset me the least little bit. For most of the film, I was disappointed in the music. The songs were great, but just fell flat. It was like the cast (but especially Halle) was just performing the songs, rather than feeling them or living in them. It felt like they lacked soul. Halle has a lovely voice, but it just didn't suit the role. My only other (big) issue was the casting for Ursula. Melissa McCarthy is great in comedies and I loved her as Suki on Gilmore Girls. However, I did not like her in the slightest as Ursula. She just didn't pull it off. Overall, I wouldn't see it again, but I am still glad for the experience.

it's just a so-so perilesss TV movie with outtakes from finding Nemo .

every shot featuring people is like an fx studio reel. its all very low budgety looking.

the songs are fine, the main actors are fine. McCarthy needs to go back to the kitchen in Stars hollow.

Oh, the kids started playing on their phone and suggested finishing another day, "coz it's quite boring", but they did find Sebastian to be hilarious.

loading replies

All that was added, i like it. it gives reallity to the movie. Like the bird that can be under water, the process to be in love, the new songs and the "Politic argumentation". But i almost leave the Cinema, when i watch the Ariel CGI. I HATE IT,

loading replies

okey, but this film was amazing, i wasnt expecting it

loading replies

Horrible live-action remake. I tried my honest hardest to like this movie but it's terrible.

loading replies

'The Little Mermaid' perfectly hits that sweet spot between reinvention and nostalgia. Halle Bailey is easily the standout. Her rendition of Part of Your World is magical. This is one of Disney’s best live-action reimaginings to date.

loading replies

I absolutely LOVED this movie. Halle Bailey was incredible as Ariel. She drew me in every time she was on screen. Melissa McCarthy also surprised me with her performance as Ursula. Overall, it's clear the people making this movie truly understood what makes these classic Disney stories feel magical, and they were able to bring that magic to life (imo) better than any other live action Disney remake has done. Oh, and see it in 3D if you can!

loading replies

Why there’s no chinese mermaids?

loading replies

I have watched 30 minutes so far of this remake and doubt if I'll watch any more. It is filled with every single hackneyed Disney film formula they could fit in. Come on, Disney - this doesn't even reach 3/10 for me.

loading replies

so the dad have 7 daughters from 7 seas.. and all different races. that means he also have a wife (women) on each sea? they confirming men can have seven wife? I'm sure the feminist won't like this.. lol

now to the movie. If you never seen the original, you will like it and will be something new for you.

I grew with the old movie and is hard to see same scene by scene and how they changed a lot of the stuff. under water graphic is nice, some CGI are OK. Music, a little of changes, but is not bad. for me is a pass... I prefer the old version.

loading replies

Actually quite enjoyed 'The Little Mermaid'. Some nitpicks aside, it's one of the better Disney remakes. Not all of the changes were necessary, but some really helped improve on the story. Giving Ariel more agency in certain scenes and making the romance more believable by having them bond and get excited and nerdy over their specific common interests definitely worked in giving a reason, beyond infatuation, why these two people like each other. Overall it was fun and boy Halle Bailey can SING.

loading replies

Saaflix you have to watch this

loading replies

Fact: daddy got turned into a worm for 4 MINUTES (out of a 90+ mins screen time)... and in that 4 minutes Ursula was defeated BY HERSELF... what was i supposed to feel?

loading replies

In retrospect, it really is pure madness how much hatred was directed at the casting of actress Halle Bailey in the role of Ariel. Bailey is one of the few reasons why this movie is even worth watching. She has just the right amount of charisma and, above all, the vocal talent required for the role. Overall, however, the movie is unfortunately a rather soulless live-action remake of a Disney classic (which I must admit I've never seen in its entirety). The whole look of the movie is ultra-boring, whether underwater or on land. The chemistry between Ariel and Eric is non-existent. And the music also failed to capture me, with a few exceptions. Maybe I'm not the target audience, but a little more creative energy would certainly have done the movie some good. At the very least, the incredibly old-fashioned story could have used a significant update.

loading replies

still prefer the original but this was a well made live action (for a change) that was only suffering for dragging too much some parts of the story and trying to add backstories that never fully developed (like Ursula's or Eric and the kingdom itself). highly recommend as cgi was very well done.

loading replies

The new "Little Mermaid" movie does have some intriguing elements. Halle Bailey's portrayal of Ariel is spot-on, and her performance shines. I can’t even bring myself to discuss flounder! I can understand the confusion with the setting, as it's meant to be Denmark but resembles the Caribbean. It's interesting that they've given Prince Eric more character development, and his song is a nice addition, although it might feel a bit out of place. Overall, it's fun with a Disney flair, but sometimes classics are better left untouched. ‍♀:ocean::movie_camera:

2 star for choosing a main lead with different skin tone and graphics + 2 star for aesthetics = 4 and it very poor remake
That's all. There is nothing in this movie I just watched this because I have disney plus hotstar subscribe still more 5 months.
I did thought their will do something good but things is really good about this movie.

loading replies

This could have been a great movie if they cut the length and put that money in visual effects. I really wanted to like it but so many things just looked so cheap :(

loading replies

The new versions of the original songs are not good.

loading replies

I don’t love live action remakes as a whole. For me, they lack the magic and nostalgia. But you better believe I made a point to try this one due to all the racist backlash.

I will say, this is probably the best live action remake Disney has made!

The cast is phenomenal. Halle Bailey was absolutely perfect in this role. Javier Bardem - helllllo Daddy Triton. Daveed Diggs as Sebastian? I mean has he ever had a role in which he didn’t blow it out of the water?! I even appreciated Awkwafina as Scuttle - even those I’ll admit it this initially gave me pause.

I didn’t love how they made Flounder. He was creepy. They coulda picked a cuter fish, in my absolutely-not-a-marine-biologist opinion! But if that’s my biggest complaint, good job Disney!

loading replies

Terrible, the cartoon one is better.

loading replies

I wouldn't throw this under the sea...but then again, I wouldn't want to watch this pointless remake ever again!

loading replies

It was Okay movie. I needed more colors. Under the sea scenes were too dark to see shit. I don't understand why movies nowadays are shot like. I think they have to stop after The Beauty and the Beast and Cinderella live actions. But I prefer dark skin Ariel with talent and respect to the character and the story than a Snow white without any of this qualities. Halle Bailey have bright future ahead

loading replies

The sea scenery and the whole swimming in the sea is a masterpiece. The rest... I think I prefer the '89 Mermaid. ;)

loading replies

Disney took a decent older children's movie and turned it into this nonsense.

loading replies

Was that necessary? - Every Live Action Disney Remakes since Jungle Book.
Totally!! - Disney after announcing Moana Remake.

loading replies

Disney needs to stop doing these shot by shot, line by line remake. Such a pointless exercise as there's no way they are good enough to replace the original.

loading replies

Incredible animation, especially the scenes underwater. The merpeople were especially well-cast. The remakes of the classic songs were brilliant. The new songs were to Broadway-esque, and the solo song by prince Eric was downright cringy. Overall, very enjoyable!

loading replies

It was good
A bit disappointed about atlantica and flounder but happy overall. Although the CGI on big giant ursula could have been better

loading replies

While it doesn’t really defeat the argument against its existence it is a lot better than I expected and Halle Berry can belt out a tune
