The One I Love 2014

This was a surprisingly good movie. This is one of those movies where the mystery most reviews and comments mention is the main reason to watch this film. Try not to ruin the surprise and watch this movie. I would highly recommend this to anyone who likes romantic movies, romantic-comedy movies, and people who don't like either of those genres.

I adored this movie from start to finish, especially because I watched it with no prior knowledge of what it was about. This is my preferred way of watching movies–I always avoid movie trailers and try to know as little as possible when I sit down to watch something. This strategy pays off for a movie like this, because what begins as a seemingly straight-forward story about a couple struggling to rejuvenate their troubled relationship begins to slowly veer away into some truly uncharted territory. I don’t want to divulge too much, but I’ll say that it reminded me of Groundhog Day in the way that it incorporates a strain of magic into the proceedings, which completely turns one’s expectations upside down. Duplass and Moss carry the show here (apart from a small cameo from Ted Danson), and they do a magnificent job. In particular, Moss’s performance reminded me of the brilliant work done by Naomi Watts, playing Diane Selwyn/Betty Elms in Mulholland Drive. She’s that good. Watch this movie, but don’t read anything about it!!

Such a weird movie, a welcome fresh breath of air. A bit of comedy, a bit of drama and a lot of mystery. Good plot, great actors. Mark Duplass once again, great! And while the ending wasn't that surprising, it didn't spoil any of the magic in this movie.

The One I Love had a cool concept it could have done more with. Rather than exploring the sci-fi angle, the movie concentrated the bulk of its runtime on deception and distrust in relationships... which, I guess I should have expected based on the movie's title, but still. It's not till the third act that anything like that happens, but it was nevertheless pretty good.

Different movie, and I appreciate what they were trying to do and say; if you could find the one you love but in a perfect version would you ignore your gut to run for the hills or stay there…But didn’t love it.

I don’t want to say too much about it because I think it’s best to see without any spoilers but I really enjoyed the concept this film presented.

The indie drama The One I Love is a bizarre but oddly fascinating film. When a troubled couple goes on a retreat to work on their marriage they discover a mysterious guest house in which strange things happen. Elisabeth Moss and Mark Duplass lead the cast and give fairly good performances. And, the storytelling does an impressive job at building up the suspense and intrigue. Yet, it takes a while for the plot to get going, and the mystery is left rather open-ended. However, despite its weaknesses, The One I Love ends up being remarkably daring and thought-provoking.

An interesting premise, or was it? To my mind, it had the beginning of a unique premise but they didn't work out the how the the premise worked. It didn't have an internal logic. SciFi films don't have to be real but they do have to build (and then be faithful to) an internal structure, which I don't think this did. And, the final twist was entirely predictable. The beginning was boring and poorly written. I thought there was little chemistry between Sophie and Ethan. But the middle was interesting. Not resolving the premise was the problem for me. So, poor beginning, predictable ending without resolving the underlying mystery - I give this film a 6 (fair) out of 10. [SciFi Mystery]
