First of all, I've not read the book and that might be a good thing as it seems that many of those who has think the movie is leaving out some important bits. For me this is possibly the best movie I've seen this year. It is truly beautiful in my eyes.
I just wanna EAT Logan Lerman in this movies. He's STUNNING playing Charlie, STUNNING! I would never guess he was THAT GOOD of an actor. I'm amazed by everything, but mostly by him. I hope he gets nominated for an Oscar, he deserve it.
In first place the movie is well-adapted from the book, maybe in the book you are more aware of the time because of the letter dates, but okay, I enjoyed so far the original story and watching the movie made me feel like when I was reading it adding of course good actors that have made a well played movie. The movie shows so many facts about youth that is hard not to feel identified with some of them. The director is actually the writer of the book, so good point at it. I have to say that I loved this movie so much that I recommend you to watch it.
We are infinite
This was beautiful and worth the watch. It was sad, scary and filled with love. This film had a true and real heart.
Wow, just wow. Kinda been in a teen/high school movie phase as of late but had no idea what i was getting myself into with this one. Not your typical teen movie where you meet girl fall in love with girl movie plot so much meaning and value in this story and not even a romance really at least I don't really think it is. Such a great cast Emma Watson is obviously good, Ezra Miller and Paul Rudd are both great, and Logan Lerman is phoneomeal I mean phoneomeal, kid really did a great job. For a high school movie where you would expect such upbeat and happy themes this movie wasn't afraid to constantly stay real. Don't get me wrong this movie isn't depressing just it's so real I mean you could feel it through the screen where at times you didn't want to watch, because of the awkwardness or tension cause you could feel it as if you were the character in the movie, this movie definitely surprised me.
"We accept the love we think we deserve."
Beautiful coming of age movie. Terrific performances, heartfelt story and a wonderful soundtrack. Still got to me on a second watch.
Aw man, it's a great film <3 I think the casting was quite good but they did miss a few things out from the book, but it seems pretty good and you should read the book too! I find Patrick is brilliantly done, Sam not so much but I think with Emma Watson if she continues this feel about her playing the "knowledgeable character" in films it'll fit really well. And Charlie is really cute, and I feel kinda connected with him and it's really sad. Oh man, it's like one of the only films that I cry in the cinema ;__;
This is my go to movie to watch when depressed. Great Movie
Incredible coming -of-age film, that will inspire you to truly live your life to the fullest. Incredible performance from the cast
Just too much pretentious hipstery “oh my god your taste in music is amazing :heart_eyes:” shit for me. The themes of friendship and Charlie’s arc are generally interesting and beautiful tho.
I believe I've found my new favourite film. What an incredible and relatable story with such an amazing delivery. Just wow.
This movie have a Lot of good things: the cast, the songs, the vintage style, a good story. But what I really think that is the best thing on this movie , is the fact that makes you feel, is really a movie that in a simple way gives to you a boch of differents sensations. And I love It. Personally I ended the movie feeling me refreshing, hopeful. Like a teenager, I like to Watch things that really gives importance to my feelings sometimes. Especialy when is a simple and delicious way like this.
Absolutily loved it. And I'm not really a English speaker, still learning, so, sorry for the erros, I just really wanted to keep how this movie made me feel.
I loved the book. I love the movie
OMG !!! What a beautiful movie. It is magnificent. Definitely within my favorites. The songs are perfect. I loved it!!!
why don’t you go and scroll through 2012-2014 tumblr and try and tell me this wasn’t a complete cultural reset? we are infinite!!!! bitch!!!!!
you know that feeling when a movie comes into your life at like the exact perfect time?
cause holy shit guys-
You love 60's music but you don't know who is David Bowie? Everything else: Perfect
Am in love with Emma Watson
“So, this is my life. And I want you to know that I am both happy and sad and I'm still trying to figure out how that could be.”
(The best film I've ever seen in my life)
I think it is my favorite movie, right before "It's kind of funny story".
GREAT MOVIE!!!
what a powerful simple movie. i loved every part of it. the message, the fun, the jokes, the music, EVERYTHING. and the cast is amazing.
Haven't read the book but liked the movie.
The Perks of Being a Wallflower is a poignant coming-of-age film that peels back the layers of teenage angst and the journey of self-discovery. Centered around the introspective protagonist, Charlie, it wrestles with philosophical concepts of existentialism and authenticity that give the film a depth not often found in the teen genre.
Echoing the works of existential philosophers like Jean-Paul Sartre and Albert Camus, the film grapples with the meaning of existence and the burden of freedom. Charlie, navigating the turbulent waters of high school, embodies the existential hero, thrust into a world without inherent meaning. His struggle with mental health, his relationships, and his grappling with past trauma underscores the existentialist notion of life's absurdity and the human struggle to find meaning within it.
Moreover, the movie takes on Soren Kierkegaard's concept of authenticity. Each character, in their own way, struggles with societal expectations and their true selves. From Patrick's fight for his sexual identity, Sam's quest to redefine herself beyond others' perceptions, to Charlie's own struggle to understand who he is amid his psychological challenges, the film delves into the struggle of defining one's authentic self amidst societal pressures.
Further, drawing on the teachings of Friedrich Nietzsche, the film shows that through suffering and facing our deepest fears, we can ultimately grow stronger - encapsulating Nietzsche's idea of "what does not kill me makes me stronger". Charlie's journey from a quiet, repressed introvert to a more open, self-assured individual underscores this concept of growth through hardship.
Finally, the film's emphasis on friendship and human connection beautifully aligns with Aristotle's concept of "philia" - deep, platonic love or friendship. Aristotle viewed "philia" as one of the highest forms of love - a mutual, selfless bond that leads to ultimate happiness. The friendship between Charlie, Sam, and Patrick exemplifies this, showing how their bond becomes a healing force in their lives.
In summary, "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" is an introspective exploration of adolescence that brings philosophical concepts to life in a tangible, relatable way. It is a film that shows the pain, the joy, and the profound self-discovery that comes with growing up. It is a testament to the human spirit's resilience and the transformative power of friendship and love.
A beautiful movie with a few side stories that don't seem distracting, rather they add to and enhance the main plot. As for the main story, it's just so well-told and directed that you can really understand how Charlie feels in each scene. I think a lot of young adults can relate to what Charlie goes through (maybe some better than others), and I think that's why so many people love this movie.
This may be the most grounded movie about high-school life. While I liked Perks, it's not perfect, however it's still pretty damn good.
Let's run it down: this is a period teen drama, set in the early '90s. Now, I was alive during this time, and was only a few years younger than the characters in this movie. I suppose, at the very least, I can appreciate that the characters are not cliches. Each person feels organic, and true to the era.
The soundtrack plays a heavy role in the movie, and I recommend "Evensong" by The Innocence Mission.
I'll take just a moment to mention that these kids go to the coolest high school ever, where Paul Rudd, and Tom Savini are teachers.
Anywho, I feel like I have gotten way off track. I liked the first and second act, but the movie picks up even more in the third, but it also gets heavy, like really heavy. While I appreciate that Perks tackles some serious subjects, it feels like it comes out of nowhere. We've been watching a movie about a kid and his circle of friends, then it shifts gears into child molestation. Maybe it's just me, but the topic always hits me like a ton of bricks, so I view it more critically than most, I imagine.
Overall, I think the writing was a little too busy. I mostly wanted to know about Charlie, and Sam. The interactions with their wider friend group was good, but I didn't need to know everything about them.
I look at this as an anti-John-Hughes movie, and I mean that with respect. What I mean is, while his '80s movies dealt with heavy subjects, and they were good for what they were, they didn't exist in reality. Perks feels very true, to a fault. I think if it would have shaved off a few minutes, and focused more on how Charlie's trauma affected his life, the ending wouldn't have felt like a blindside hit.
Totally worth a watch, especially for semi-outcast, extroverted teens.
A very touching film in a way. 7.7 :star:
"We accept the love we think we deserve."
I feel like I had seen most of this movie through GIFs that have been shared over the years. It is frustrating yet endearing at times, and the characters are so good. I want more movies with Logan Lerman as the main actor after seeing this.
cried….cocteau twins in the soundtrack
Why can't logan lerman and emma watson be in movies as good as this??? I swear they're amazing actors but they're rarely in movies I love. That aside, this is the best highschool film ever made, and one of the best films I've seen. Perfect music choices, memorable characters; not just the main ones but even the side characters are great, especially paul rudd. This film has a lot of atmosphere to it, really great directing! It took me rewatching this film to realize that his aunt had sexually assaulted him, which really changed my perspective on the film (in a good way). Unlike most of my other favorite movies, I think this film can be enjoyed by everyone. So if you haven't seen it yet, get on that will ya!
Worth it for the music during the first half (especially if you are of "that age" :-) ). Although how could they not know what "the tunnel song" was? That destroys the credibility of the script entirely!
And some great lines
Son: Dad - can I have $30?
Dad: $20? What do you need $10 for?
(ok, that might only appeal to dads)
Some great characters with Logan Lerman (playing the guy we all felt like), Emma Watson (who has well recovered from her early acting career), Erza Miller (playing the guy we were all friends with) and Paul Rudd (playing is frequent characters - but fitting in well here)
Generic coming-of-age with the same score as Batman Begins. Seriously, Trakt?
Amazing movie but I don't think that the format suits it very well.
After reading the book I just felt like this movie doesn't live up to the full journey that is experienced by Charlie.
Because they are trying to cram a book into such a short space of time, a lot of events are missed and while some movies do this well, this was not one of them.
Something that stood out to me in the book was the emotional journey of it all and the gradual moving of time from one event to the next. Charlie's adventure is a marathon, but the movie makes it a sprint.
Great actors, scenes, storyline and all the rest. While it is not effective in my eyes, some parts of the movie definitely are better seen in real life instead of in the pages of a book. But, I also feel that what occurs in the novel is not really suited for film, as without the breaks and interlude it can make the film seem very disjointed and confusing.
Personally, I think that this could have become a great mini-series but oh well.
Recommended.
why do i always cry?
I read the original book long a go and it quickly became one of my favorites. I was spectical about the movie prior to watching it but didn't disappoint.
Amazing movie, this movie is very touching
One of the best amazing movie!
my favorite movie ... I love it very much ... it touches me in a very good way ... I recommend it a lot ..
This is one of my favorite movies and books of all time. I've related with Charlie so many times as i read the book and watched the movie, and cried too. Really amazing, recommend.
"In this moment, I swear we are infinite."
Actually I didn't spent a good time like a movie in my high school age and I always have admired hurtful but joyful days in my adolecence. The film reminded me of the thought again as well as films describing days of high schools. What if I re-attended a school again in a different place? I may spend a similar days again? I'm not so young anymore and may have to think other things. However, it's also important to feel infinity sometimes.
A poignant coming of age story with a sobering twist. Great performances. I gave it an 8 (great) out of 10.
As I haven't read the source novel (yet), I can only speak for the movie. That, however, is a true masterpiece in my opinion. Moving, insightful, thought-provoking and doing a great job at transporting its message. A thing many adaptions tend to - sadly - fail at when moving to the big screen. I could say a lot more here, but to keep it short: one of the best movies I've seen in a long time, if not at all.
I was hesitating about watching this movie, but now, i dont have any regrets, it's now one of my favorites movie ever!
and at this moment, i swear....we are infinite
A really heart warming story...
The great acting, good soundtrack and solid storyline alone would already make this film a pretty good one. But the depth of the story and background of the characters gives this movie an extra layer that a lot of 'coming of age' movies lack.
First off, the acting is superb. Every character that has some role in this movie, even those without lines, is casted perfectly. The 'bad guys' and 'bullies' are not played out as villains, or stereotypes (except for the no name students.) There is no ultimate good guy, not even the main character. It looks on screen as if the characters hang out outside of their working hours as well. This resulted in the cast behaving so naturally that it didn't feel staged.
Having said all that, I have to give a special shout out to Ezra Miller who did such a good job that he probably would have played everyone from the screen whith any other cast.
The storyline is very realistic, even though there are a few turn of events that might make you wonder if you would've done the same. But remember this is a coming of age story, and making mistakes are a big part of growing up.
It does not often get predictable. Even the 'does he get the girl' part was not set in stone for me. The first schoolball is probably the most cliché part in the movie, and some of the camera techniques used. But hey this is not an art house film. :P
Every character has it's own complicated background story, but because they do not spell it out for you in full detail it makes the characters more human and appealing. It is as if you are getting to know them while the main character is getting to know them, and the obstacles within himself too.
This realistc setting and chemistry between the actors made me memorize my own time in High school and the friendships I have made there and how we/I used to be.
There is a line at the end of the movie that made this even more relevant since realized I thought something along those lines too back in those days:
"I know these will all be stories someday. And our pictures will become old photographs. We'll all become somebody's mom or dad. But right now these moments are not stories. This is happening."
I guess if you had a bad time in High school you wouldn't have had those feelings of course. But in the end it makes saying goodbye (and especially the goodbyes in this movie) more emotional. The characters are aware of the future, and what awaits them. Luckily the movie lets you fill in what could happen afterwards for yourself.
Great movie: good plot and excellent acting, awesome movie soundtrack.
Definitely hard not to cry, amazing movie! Just came in a good time.
I absolutely loved this movie. Generally speaking, I am a big "coming of age / life realization" film fan - this one was recommended, however I was blown out the water (technically my home media center) by it awesomeness. I accept this is not a film for everyone, but in my books its up there with the "coming of"greats.
I thought it was a pretty good movie
I absolutely loved this movie!! Definitely on my top movies list!
The book is better.
I loved it.. its so good.. :)
Hope it's good...should be...love Emma...
such an adorable movie with a GREAT soundtrack!!!
It was a really nice movie, overall I enjoyed my time! Now I need to read the book. :-)
Great movie. One of the best I have seen in a while.
a pleasant surprise. a really good movie!
This has to be one of my new favourites. Absolutely stunning!
Amazing Film
I recommend it!
no words to describe it .
Absolutely loved it! I could relate to Logan's character on certain things, and Emma was incredible, adorable, beautiful (and many more), as usual. 1hr 43mins well spent!
Good film, I expected a POS to be honest. Glad I was wrong :)
that was one weird plot twist in the end :O it actually kind of made it better..till then it was just your average "trying to be smart but missing a lot" type of teen movie.
it's like john hughes is back from the grave. top notch.

10/10 I cried manly tears
Despite being a really well-acted and a moving story, it was actually kinda hard to watch; I had to take breaks every so often while watching it, in part because of the cringe-inducing awkwardness of it all, in a good way. It's really well-made though and I'm impressed that it was actually directed by the author of the novel, everything goes together nicely. Great coming-of-age story, I'd thoroughly recommend it.
