I watched this film because Ebert gave it four stars and it was on many "best of" lists for the year that it was released.

The good:

Like most good movies that are identified as Westerns (or take place in places in the west that are desolate) this film is a rather simple story with a more complicated undercurrent. A lot of the narratives that were touched on (immigration, misogyny, etc) are in full view in this film. Some people escape these areas and some become part of them. The film had a good pace and a very good ending. I think the more you are willing to dig into a film like this the more you will get from it.

The not-as-good:

I generally despise January Jones but she was ok here. That said... she won an award? For what? She is January Jones in all of her roles.

While the movie was good it felt like it could have been a real epic. I don't know exactly what I am trying to say here as I probably contradicted what I said a minute ago.
